View Full Version : Old PS2 vs new PSTwo... reliability?

I've been considering finally buying a PS2, and I've been leaning towards getting the old style PS2 because I prefer the look of it, and I have no intention of going online... but has anyone compared the reliability of the two units? Did Sony make any changes that might shorten or lengthen the MTBF of the laser units on the new model or anything like that?

I would go with the slim model,I've had one for a few months now with no problems. I think the PSTwo's will prove to more reliable simply for being top loaders, also the games snap in to place similar to the Gamecube which seems to make a lot of difference.

If you're planning on ever networking two (or more) PS2 units together via iLink (aka Firewire) cable for system link play, then you should get the original PS2. The PStwo doesn't have the iLink port.
EDIT: Of course, if you just want to play the hell out of single-player games for now, and worry about picking up multiple PS2 units for networking in a couple of years when they're dirt cheap, then I'd go with the PStwo for now, since I haven't seen the continuous stream of "My PStwo broke!" threads that were common when the PS2 launched. Apparently, some (mostly the earlier) versions of the PS2 have a pretty low MTBF.

I'd honestly go with the older one, it's cheaper(?) and it's full-featured.

I think you should go with the new one..
Less moving parts = Less to break.
Im on my 2nd ps2. This time around I bought the slim one remembering the time my cousin goofed up the tray by pulling on it when it was half way opened.. I beat the crap out of him, but it wasnt enough for the headaches that it caused.

If you look after the PS2, it shouldn't be giving anyone any problems. I know people who kick their disc trays in, and what not. If you do anything like that, you deserve it to breakdown.
Personally, I like the look of the new slim PS2 but my original PS2 is in great working order, and I have no plans to replace it. Plus, I generally don't like top-loaders.
How reliably could I hook up a HD to nu ps2? I'll get back to answering after I find out.

For reliable, you can't beat an older style PS2 with and HDD Loader.

Can't do it, the PSTwo doesn't support the PS2 HDD.
I picked up a PSTwo at launch and sold my original lauch PS2 at the same time (the one used in my infamous read laser cleaning tutorial). I've had no problems with my PSTwo reliability wise and given the lessons learned with PS2 development and design I'd say you have a better chance of a PSTwo being more reliable. Also it freaking looks like a baby TurboDuo!! :D
However there are some quirks with the PSTwo, first off from time to time I get audio seek problems when playing Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - during the start of some radio conversations there is a delay while the PSTwo finds where the audio is. Also I've heard reports that Crash Twinsanity locks up about 60% through when being played on a PS2. Additionally you can't use i-link (as said above) and if you're into import modding this really isn't the console for you. (at least at this time - still, it's REALLY tight inside)
Then again, if i-link is your thing you can wait until PS2's are dirt cheap used (again, as said above) and if you're not playing games that use the HDD then I'd say go PSTwo all the way. There is ZERO loading seekup lag with the PSTwo.

Thanks for the comments. I'll probably leave the purchase for later when the PS3 comes out. That way I'll likely be able to pick up a unit for cheap while everyone is trading their old ones in. Either that or perhaps just go for the PS3 if it's backwards compatible.

Which is why I hate it so. Blasphemy!!!
Go with whichever you want. I personally like the idea of the toploader ala DC, PSX or Cube. In my experience, consoles don't simply "crap out". Owners MAKE them crap out through improper use or neglect. Granted, since it is a manufactured electronic item, you might occassionally get one that does have a legitimate problem....but not to the extent that people would believe.
There are plenty of easy ways to kill a PS2, but none of them are the machine's fault. :/

I may have to pick one up sometime and just use my regular PS2 for modding or as a backup.

I think this is an MGS3 problem, as I also get the same thing on my 3 year old PS2.

That combo is the reason I had to buy a new PS2. My HD (not the Sony model, it was a Segate I hooked to the BBA) came loose when I moved it in my entertainment center -- zonk. Dead as a doornail.
So, I had to buy a new one, and got the new style. Didn't wanna risk frying another old style one. It's a shame, that Ps2 made it 4 years with no problems. I liked keeping some of my slow loading games on HD as well.
I would think the new PStwo would be more reliable -- it just 'feels' more solidly built. Plus, it boots a game up alot quicker than my old one did.

That is precisely my plan. I have done that with every other generation until this one, but the PS2 is currently in the category of "wait until it's over." I really want to play a good number of games on it, but I figure that I have too many other games to play.
If you do decide to go with it, personally I plan on eventually getting a PS2 simply for the fact that I like tray loaders. That's probably a dumb reason to go with it, but heck... that's what I'll probably use ;)

The day the new Xbox launches, Sony will put out an official press release saying the PS3 will be backwards compatible and play blu-ray movies out of the box.
Don't believe me? Check the dates for the dreamcast launch and the press release about ps2 playing dvd movies :)

Great to hear someone else comment about this! I couldn't find anything on it anywhere else - maybe there was just a small bad production run of MGS3.

No maine doesthe same thing its all copies of the game.
If you have the money go with the PS2 with a HD loader, faster loading times and it should last forever, relativly speaking. :)
