Umm where there not "gone" as of yet but I do miss the old Rare, when they were making amazing games on N64.

I dont really miss them but I do wish Sunsoft were still around as they were one of the best of the NES developers.

SNK but they still live on as SNK/Playmore :D

I would have to say when Sega dropped out of the console race :( It was like a death in the family to me and felt as though they were gone forever at first.
Gaming has never been the same since or at least not to me.

I miss Westwood Studios and Origin.

In their original, pre-assimilated-by-EA forms anyway. And no, I'm not going to turn this into an anti-EA rant, just saying that these two companies in particular weren't well served by the association in the end.

I agree with PDF ... and would like to add Appeal, developers of Outcast for PC. So sad that Outcast 2 didn't happen :(

I'll go with Technos. Between Double Dragon and the Kunio franchise, they were pretty near the gods of the beat-'em-up genre.

I am going to have to third Westwood. Everyone I know who has played both Command and Conquer and StarCraft likes C&C more. And thats Tiberian Sun. My other friend says StarCraft is better but has never played C&C. Now all C&C is, with Generals, is another copy of StarCraft, like EVERY OTHER RTS game that I have played recently. Rome Total War may have been different, but I only played the demo so I cant be sure. I like the C&C format for RTS way more than StarCraft. I hate having to make little worker/slaves build my buildings. Anyway...

Square..
stupid Ea is going to destroy the world someday.. you can quote me on it when it happens and you see me on CNN explaining how my "EA conspiracy theory" about how they are saving to build a super-nuclear bomb was true afterall..

Probably Bullfrog, I suppose. I also consider the Sonic Team to be pretty much dead. Hmm, someone mentioned Westwood. Hmm. Good in their day, but they are nothing to me now.

Microprose was my favorite publisher. Darklands, Sword of the Samurai, X-Com, Civilization, Railroad Tycoon, Pirates!, Tachyon, etc.

I second that. Technos games are great and original multiplayer games, and River City Ransom is my favorite game of all time.

Well I havent been keeping up with it but I hope 3DO makes it through. High Heat is the only baseball game I play anymore.
As for SNK, Im glad they "went away". The rebirth is much better. Its like the good guys won.

Sierra. LucasArts Old School.

Back in the day I'd buy ANYTHING from Sierra. Highlights I have bought and played and are still somewhere in my house:

Sierra:
King's Quest 1-VII
Gabriel Knight
Space Quest 1-4
Police Quest 1-4
Phantasmagoria
Goblins 1-3
Quest for Glory Series

Lucas Arts:
Maniac Mansion / DOTT
Sam& Max (shame thie 2nd one got canned :( )
Full Throttle
THE DIG - I LOVED this game. Maybe one of my favorites of all time
Indiana Jones Series
Monkey Island Series
Rebel Assault I & II
Dark Forces I & II

The list goes on with these two companies. I am an adventure game addict!

Heh, this reminds me of The Bitmap Brothers - they haven't done anything good since Z. Technically they're not dead afaik, but certainly they're past their golden years in the beginning of the 90ies :/

brings tears to my eyes :bawling: how such brilliant games Double Dragon nes and Super Double Dragon have to live with the shame of :

that horrible snes fighter
the movie
the horrible american cartoon

at least kunio never got raped x_x

and there'll probably never be another game... sniff :.......(

Some great companies already mentioned. I'd like to add to the list the oldschool Apogee (Commander Keen, Bio-Menace, etc.) who now waste their time making Duke Nukem Forever, and Rare classics such as battletoads and snake rattle n roll! I don't think Rare is still alive anyway...

Microprose was great. Darklands rocked, I still play it from time to time. X-Com is a classic, and Colonization was fun. But aren't they still around?

I guess my pick would be them or Apogee. I loved Apogee's kooky games, they are gone right? hehe

Sierra was great too, I still remember playing Red Baron a ton.

If I saw one of those 3 lables I'd pretty much get it.

Hmm, tough choice. I'm quite partial to Techno Soft, Renovation, and to a lesser extent, Data East. I'd also say Hudson Soft because now all games developed by them will have a huge Konami logo following the title screen everytime along with Konami's name on the title screen copyright, and credits screen.

Atari of course.
Yea, I know there is a company out there using their name. If you die on the street and a guy comes along and steals your wallet and takes on your I.D., he may fool 90% of the population but those closest to you will know the truth. Such is Atari and classic gamers. We know the truth.

Epyx deserves a mention too.

Westone (they are dead, aren't they?)

They still exist. Hopefully they'll make a new Wonder Boy some day.

Atari is my first choice, although (perhaps oddly enough) Acclaim is close behind.

Taxan - the "Mastiff" of the NES era, only localized games such as Japan's Hokuto no Ken 2 being our Fist of the North Star, 8 Eyes which had my most favorite 8-bit music ever, in case y'all didn't know, the game Mystery Quest is actually property of Square/Squaresoft.

Then they made their swan song with the game "Magician".

Psikyo. No more Strikers XXXX. :(

(Actually, they may have survived as a corporate entity, but if so, they're now a diaper service or something.)

I'd also like a new wonderboy with NO RPG elements and it must be 2d, like a viewtiful joe/ alien hominoid style THNX

Boss Game Studios.

Being an N64 fan, they helped to make THE most killer racing games on the system. Among them were Top Gear Rally and the absolutely phenomenal World Driver Championship (the N64's answer to Turismo).

Because it needs to be said a second time. System Shock 2 is one of the best games ever made.

Working Designs was always a favorite for me, I have great memories of Cosmic Fantasy 2 for the Duo... man that game was my life for a while. I guess they just released another game last year and then have gone silent again so who knows...

Old school LucasArts, the Zak McKrackin box set was a true work of art.

I'm going to have to add my assent to Looking Glass Studios, Origin, and Westwood. Three of the greatest game companies of all time, and they all got destroyed in one way or another. Seeing Ultima VIII and IX almost makes me weep, because it's like watching the agonizing death throes of a work of art.

Oh how much I'd kill to see a revival of the Joe & Mac series. :(

There was a sequel on the snes which was decent J & M 2 as well as an arcade sequel: Joe and Mac Returns with snow bros and bobble bobble style gameplay O_O I play it every now and then, it's tough too bad there wasn't a home port :(
