R-Type 3 level select??

I was playing this game (SNES) and got to the end of the 4th level, after travelling backwards through giant laser/lava streams. Anyway, I had to shut it off and I was hoping there was a level select, either built in or with a Game Genie. After some quick searching I found the same code on twenty different websites that said:

"Press R(10), L repeatedly, Start at the continue screen. The number of times L is pressed should be equal to the level to be selected."

Perhaps this is for the GBA version?

This seemed to cause a change, and it mentioned something about level 2 when I started (even when I pressed L 3 times), but it would always start me at the first level. Any help? I feel justified in using a level select because the game gives you infinite continues anyway.

At the continue screen press R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, L repeatedly, Start.
Level Select (the number of times L is pressed dictates the level you skip to)

So you have to press the R button 10 times at contunie screen, then press the L button 4 times if you want to go to level 4, then Start.

I'm finding codes that say to do that at the continue screen. Maybe you are doing it at the start screen.

Ok, I feel stupid because I was trying this at the title screen, but when I tried it at the continue screen it still did not work. I tried it many times. Oh well.
