View Full Version : Do you remember: Gargoyle's Quest?

A genius of a game from those masterminds at Capcom. This game provides probably one of my earliest gaming memories. A real testament to good design, in my opinion.
Every Saturday morning, as early as half four, I would sneak out of my bedroom, pick up my brother's GameBoy that he would leave outside his bedroom door for me and head to the lounge. I would then arrange a long glass table and some pillows around the L shaped couches to create something fort-like. Armed with my quilt and Timmy Mallet on TV, I would set off into the world of Gargoyle.
Do you remember this gem?

Yes! Gargoyles Quest was an excellent gameboy game. It's probably one of those few GB games that I REALLY got into.
I remember it well, I was in 6th grade at the time. The level design was pretty good, and the music was excellent. But most of all I dug the story, very original. I remember that there were some RPG elements in it as well as far as leveling up Firebrand's abilities and such. The game was pretty hard too.
Gargoyles Quest II was released on the NES during it's final years - it was good, but not nearly as engulfing as the first. I'm very surprised that capcom never took advantage of this lisence for a simple GBA game (SNES style) for a Gargoyles Quest III.
I remember when I was playing GQ1 and I finished the school year and I was about to go off to camp - I had just gotten to one of the big bosses (Breager? Breuger?) and I was having a hell of a time beating him - how sad I was to find out that I was not allowed to bring my GB to sleepaway camp. I had to wait a whole week to get back home and kick his ass. Kick his ass I did.

I only discovered today that he was a character from Ghosts 'N Goblins.
And I completely agree about the music. I loved that music.
What I really loved was that it was more than just a platformer. It had quite a few elements which played out very nicely. They weren't underdone so much that they were merely tacked on and they weren't overblown so much that they put me off the game. Great blend.
And I didn't know until today that it was from Capcom. That alone makes me love it even more :)
Yup, great game.

Well it is a spinoff, the japanese title is Red Ariimaa: Makaimura Gaiden.
Btw, here is a great remix (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01248) of the ending theme.

Yep, it was my birthday present from a friend back in 1991. Great, great game. It's notorious for being the very first game of mine that ever just disappeared without a trace.

Yes, I remember that game, too! But I must have lost it when I come to think about it. What a shame, I really loved it. Guess I lent it to somebody who never gave it back. Why do I always only lose the good games like that?! Anyway, thank you for reminding me, I will keep my eyes open at the local easy cash store for it.

Yes, one of my all-time favorites. And there IS a Gargoyle's Quest III - Demon's Crest for SNES :)
Totally kick-ass game that EVERYONE should play. Maybe I should go over it in the Sleeper.... :)
Beating that game gave me a HUGE sense of accomplishment. Was a great game, and to this day one of my favorites on the gb. The nes version was pretty good as well, but I've never tried the snes one.. I'll have to pick it up sometime soon.

The GQ series is something I too am surprised never really got more entries in the series. I've beaten all 3 of them and they all have the perfect difficulty level....I have very fond memories of these games... :)

I'm adding the SNES sequel to my list of must-have right now. Unfortunately, its probably quite a rare one to pick up.

aka "Demon's Blazon" in Japan
Firebrand...aka "The Red Blaze"...ah yes, the one and only spin off of the "Ghouls N Ghosts" series
One of my all time favorite trilogies. I wish Capcom would bring this series back.
I remember the first time I played Gargoyle's Quest on GameBoy, I was amazed how well the background music sounds.
Gargoyles Quest II was also released for gameboy in japan but that version never made it over here.

Yeah i remember the game and i bought it when it came out here in Europe.
The game totally rocks, for me very addictive,i like these kind of genres,i just needed to beat it,every day i played it.
Last years i found my game boy packed in a box, totally forgot about, most of my games where there but GC wasn't,i dunno where it could be,i searched all the boxes in the addic, ah well maybe buy it again soon.

I still own this cart. It is a fantastic game. I started playing it very seriously on my GBA last year. I got to the desert and got stuck; haven't played it since, but I should.
It must be pointed out that on the crappy little 4-shades-of-grey Gameboy, this game looks amazing. Whoever the artist was did a bang-up job of getting the most out of those 4 shades. Really, I'd say it's maybe the best-looking B&W Gameboy game I've ever seen, end of story.
It's also definitely a Ghosts 'N' Goblins spinoff--it says so on the title screen! The game really has that dark, rainy-day appearance of the first slew of Capcom's NES games (compare to Ghosts 'N' Goblins, Trojan, Section Z--all these games have a very dark, subdued color palette. Gargoyle's quest seems to portray that the best it can.)

I need to go back and try this game again based on everyone's opinions.
I saw the Demon on the cover and recognized it as a character from Ghosts 'n Goblins.
I loved G & G so much that I was very disappointed when Demon's Crest didn't play just like it.
Fire up that SNES...

Really? Sad, because Gargoyle's Quest II came to the US GameBoy and NES

GQ2 only came out for the GB in Japan, not the US.
I love the whole GQ series. It and G'NG were the whole reason I started my old Ghoul Realm website, because no one had done a site devoted to all the games and spinoffs of the G'NG universe.

Man! I didn't know there were 2 GB titles! I thought thwere were only 3 games. Is the GB part two the same as the NES?
Firebrand...aka "The Red Blaze"...ah yes, the one and only spin off of the "Ghouls N Ghosts" series
Well, if you consider the recent games on the current gen systems direct sequels, I guess that's true. :)

For the most part, yes. I don't recall seeing any differences other than the title screen.

The Maximo series is what you are referring to?
Yeah that would be considered part of the series as well.
I like how the story lines were connected in some way, Firebrand was always known as some nobody character and they never really acknowledge him until after you clear out the area of their monster problems. He never spoke of his true idenity. Yet whenever the boss was defeated, they would say before death "The Red Blaze...the legend is true!"

Indeed. I admit, a US version of the game would have been cool to see, but at least we got the NES version.

yup, thank god we got, GQ2 "The Demon Darkness"
Demon's Crest, what's there not to say? One of the finest soundtracks to a SNES game. Which actually imho sits up there next to Super CastleVania 4, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 2/3, and so many more

Demon's Crest = FREAKING AWESOME. I tell ya, I just had to beat that game to see all the bosses... the true last boss, the Dark Demon, MAN that was hard! Firebrand and all his different abilities are too awesome for words... damn. I highly recommend playing DC if you can.
As for the first two GQ games, I haven't played them too much, but from what I have, it's very good stuff indeed. Despite the RPG elements, they don't seem like games you can get lost in... well, not literally. Figuratively, you could get lost in GQ2 and miss dinner for a fortnight. LOL

DC actually got me interested in the first two games, which I had played beforehand and wasn't really into. DC convinced me to go back and give them both another shot... and I'm glad I did. Great games, they are.

Ah yes, that Gargoyle (Firebrand was it?). I despised him so much in the G'NG series, he was such a pain in the ass to kill sometimes...
After Gargoyles Quest, I gained respect for that annoying goblin.
