View Full Version : Metroid 2 is driving me crazy!

That's right, Metroid 2 for Gameboy. I've finally gotten around to playing this thing (I bought it 5 years ago) and have looked forward to spending time with it and making a map. I'm a huge fan of the original and Super Metroid and can't believe I've never sat down and tried to solve this thing. Before I can buy and play the new Metroid games, I really want to solve this first.
I'm quickly finding out that mapping this game is a messy business. Has anyone else here tried to make a map for it? Whereas everything on the original game lined up perfectly (as well as Super Metroid), this is not the case for Metroid 2. There are several parts that overlap others and don't allign properly. It's driving me bonkers. I'm insanely meticulous about how I map (I count and recount the blocks in every room and passage) so I know my method is sound. It's crazy. I didn't want to cheat and look at an already-completed map--I wanted the joy of discovery--but now I feel that I should look at how someone else has rectified this problem.
Kind of a bummer.

If I remember correctly, a lot of Metroid 2's maps were a lot more straghtforward and almost linear (at least in comparison to the other Metroids). It made it so mapping to me wasn't really needed as I was able to remember where the heck I was... :)

Well, it wasn't terribly difficult to map after all, despite all the overlapping sections... although it doesn't fit together like a snug jigsaw puzzle, it was possible.
What is NOT possible (for me at this point) is trying to destroy the final, ultra-boss, omega metroid, whatever-you-call-it... the rest of the game is relatively simple with not-too-difficult enemies. Then at the end there is this thing that is just IMPOSSIBLE to kill. I've got full missles, full energy, I'm pumping missles into this thing and still no dent. There's gotta be some trick to this I'm not getting, some method or strategy to kill this sucker. I die every time, and I've tried like ten times. For those of you who have beaten it, what is your strategy? I'd love to see the final ending.
Final boss woes aside, it was thrilling to finally explore a new (to me) Metroid world. It was long overdue. Now I really cannot wait to acquire Metroids Fusion and Prime.

If you think Metroid 2 is hard, you should try Metroid Prime. Some enemies are a lot bigger than one screen. :o
Or how about Metroid Fusion? The final enemy is probably one of the hardest especially considering you have a time limit to finish the fight and still reach your ship for escape.

Fusion's final boss was easy. The SA-X was the tough one.

Fusion's final boss wasn't hard as long as you had plenty of time left to beat it. I made the mistake of looking for a save room and a recharge station before I went to the hangar, and I wound up running out of time just as you-know-who was coming to Samus' rescue.
And that fight with the SA-X was one of the coolest boss battles I've seen in a long, long time.
As for the Queen Metroid in Metroid 2, you can freeze her mouth open if you fire a missle into it just as her jaws gape at their widest when her head lunges at you. Then you can pump a load of missles into her before she starts moving again.

Kid Fenris--Thanks! THAT is the info I needed. I'll kill her/it this weekend when I return home.
