View Full Version : Do You Arrange Your Games In Sub-Sets?

I was gathering up all my XBox games which have gotten all mixed up and am about to start arranging them when I thought it might be interesting to put them in "sub-sets"...perhaps group all my sports games together (oooh, all those EA symblols) and my platform games together, FPS games, etc. I wonder if anyone else does this or am I being rather...what's the word...ridiculous? I may just keep them in straight alphabetical order but it's something I'm thinking about. There are some genres I may only have one or two games of (I don't have a lot of RPGs, for instance) so this may not be the greatest idea since cd-roms...

Hell yea!
My mega drive is the only console ive got a decent amount of games for (118 at last count), and I organise them thusly:

-Arcade style/ports go in the shelf under the mock arcade cabinet with a mega drive in it.
-Black/grey chequered boxes are all on a shelf, with blue spine games at them.
-Silver Box blue spine game go next to the blue boxes coz theyre purdy.
-Colorful EA games go on the next shelf, with white box EA Sports games next to them.
-Under that is the "hodgepodge shelf with some Accolcade cardboard boxes in there for good measure.
-Last shelf is for ugly yellow spine EA games, cart only games and the crap (Action 52, etc).

When i get a few more platformers I might put them together, providing they all have the same spine set/box style. The modern systems are probably the only ones you can put games into genre without it looking like a rainbow puked on your collection though.. too bad most of my PS2 games are racing or action :/
Alphabetical was always too...... organised for my liking.

I do!

Genesis games are arranged RED BOXES first, then lighter shades of red, then by color.

Master System goes by the plain grid with unexciting font first, then grid with different fonts (usually the UK ones) then the colorful ones.

I arrange NES by tengens first, then unlicensed, then by label color.

TG-16 by label color

All Saturns shooters go together, based by horizonal, verticle, old-scool fake 3-D on rails, true 3-D on rails, then 3-D

SNES anywhichaway except for shooters which go together

PSX are by genre... shooter, RPG, racing, etc.

Dreamcast by black or white label, except for shooters and Capcom fighters.

N64 and domestic Saturn are alphabetical.

I'm a weirdo!

I am glad to hear that others are as obsessive as me

I sub catorgize the following:
Boxed Nes Capcom games
Boxed Nes SNK games
Boxed Nes Konami games
Boxed Nes Nintendo Pixel Picture games
Boxed Nes Tengen games
I try to put all the games one company does together, but lately I have been lazy

For Genesis I proudly display all the Rennovation, Namco, Koei, Sega Black cased, Sega Red cased, etc in their own divisions.

I could go on and on how I sub categorize, but all my game systems are either organized by color, company, size, or a combination of both.

I used to have mine grouped by company, alphabetically (just the games within the company, not the companies also). This became a hassle, so now everything is in alphabetical order by title. I go by the DP Guide's alphabetical listings.

I put all my 2600 games into sets by cart style(so basically by company) and then my NES and GCN games are alphabetized...and all the rest of my games are in no realy order, because I have not really felt like spending the time organizing them..

My collections are sorted in a very specific order-by developer/publisher (the first and second parties for each system, followed by developer in alphabetical order), then each developer/publisher's game in alphabetical order. With the shifting alliances/publishers of NES titles, this makes for a very odd lookingcollection at times.

mine are just in alpha order. i can't be bothered breaking them up into sub-sections. It's easier to find one when i want to play it anyway.

I've done that before with every system i have (I think)

I've Seperated the Greatest hits versions of games from others in the system's category, For instance.

Most of my games are just arranged alphabetically. My NES collection is no exception, except for my unlicensed games. They are organized by alphabet within a particular manufacturer. So Tengen games are in the T section of my NES games, but they alphabetized within the Tengens and not the collection as a whole. Damn that sounds garbled.

Atari 2600 - My games are sorted by manufacturer and then alphabetized.

Genesis - The early black box games are seperate from everything else.

PC Engine - It goes:

Namcot HuCards
Hudson Vol. HuCards
Games Express HuCards
All other HuCards
CD-Roms Games
Super CD-Rom Games

Everything else is in alphabetical order.

I was surprised when I saw how many XBox games I have since it's actually my newest console. I didn't buy it until the price cut a year or two ago and I already have 54 games for it now...probably about as many as I have for the GameCube and I got that one on Launch Day.

No subsets for me. For my large collections, I arrange the games by alphabetical order. Series like NES Metal Gear and Zelda give me conniptions because I like to have all the sequels together, but they don't line up alphabetically (Metal Gear vs. Snake's Revenge, Legend of Zelda vs. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link). What's an anal retentive gamer to do?

I do this too. I also used to segregate my Odyssey2 imports & homebrews from the remainder of my O2 shelf, but I decided, in the end, I like the minor shock value of Something That Doesn't Seem To Belong, and the closer inspection that it invites. What can I say, I'm proud of that shelf. ;)

Everything is in alphabetical order. I only collect for 5 or 6 systems though so my collection is not as big as some other people's. My main collection is my Mad collection. Over 1000 magazines, 600 books, 40 something shirts, etc etc. I could on and on. I have to limit myself to the room I have.

Nope...sorta.

N64 occupies an entire wall of it's own (naturally...those boxes are damned big). Alphabetized.

PSX, NES, Genny, DC, Cube and Xbox are all on the other wall, alphabetized but seperated into systems, ie no Cube mixed in with Xbox.

I always organize games by publisher, then alphabetically. For NES I take it a step further and organize the boxes by box-style on the shelf. So, for example, all 1st party black-box games are lined up next to each other. It looks great.

I think for any system that has unlicensed carts (NES, VCS), storing them strictly alphabetically looks chaotic. I like seeing all the shiny Camerica games together, the AVE's together, 2600 Activision carts together, etc.

My PlayStation games are organized by genre and then alphabetically within genre. It's the only game system for which I have more than 50 titles (about 160, actually). As was mentioned above, sometimes you have to take liberties with oddly-named sequels. On my shelves the first of a series is put where it ought to go, with any sequels following immediately after.

The rest of my systems get straight alphabetical treatment, except that imports separated from domestics. I'm not sure where the line is where I'd shift from alphabetical to "by genre". Probably somewhere between 50 and 100 games.

I only did that with my Nes once, but since it was hard to find my favorite games, now I have all of them divided on three different categories: IŽll never play this again, IŽll play this sometimes and my most played games. :)

I used to organize games by platform, and then alphabetically. But the games get moved about so much, I can't keep them in alphabetical order at the moment. And if and when I do reorganize, I will be putting them in genre mostly. With the exception of budget/classic ranges for cosmetic reasons.

My shelving isn't the best. Where I have two shelves, I could have three for DVD cases. Unfortunately, if we put up another shelf, it means moving my big ass 42" out the way, then cleaning up all the mess and so on. I just don't have time. It means that PC Games are starting to double up and cover the ones at the back which is not idea, and I'm working hard to get anything non-gaming out of my room and into the rubbish bin :)

I've cleared space for my recent ebay snes/mega drive purchases, and that space should see me good for a little while at least. You've always got to be one step ahead in this business.

Me too. It's too much work for me to go through every game on every console and subdivide them like that.

When applicable, the main criterion that applies is always COLOR (before alpha). So, for example, my 2600 and Intellivision carts are divided by company, then color coordinated within each group according to the ROY G BIV principle (the continuum of colors). Within each color, they're arranged by alpha.

NES games are too varied, so I go with alpha for them. 7800 games are all alpha (within the Atari corp division, of course).

5200 (Atari corp releases) and O2 carts, though, I arrange by serial number!

And of course, with the boxes on the shelf, color (within each company) is again the main factor. Click here! (http://videogamecollectors.com/gallery/Kevin-Moon-s-gaming-chamber/Wall_of_boxes)

The only true subset I have is a separate batch of NES games that I call my "Lance games" collection. Lance was my best video gaming friend in jr. high and high school, and these are all the same games (not the exact same physical carts, but the same titles) that he had for the NES. Sort of a little tribute in his honor. (He was killed 12 years ago.)

I do for a couple platforms. For PSX, I group the Agetec A1 titles seperately and for Genesis, I do the same with my Renovation titles. Maybe down the road, I'll group all my Working Designs titles (all platforms) in one space. Since I only have seven titles right now, that'll have to wait. If I ever get my hands on some Panesians, I'd do the same with those.

For me, its all about color by the console.
Rows of boxed red Genesis games look very sleek. :-P

I display them both ways, depending on the system and look of the boxes. For example, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, and Sony Playstation are all placed in alphabetical order. There is very little, if any different in the style of cases anyhow.

My genesis games were in alphabetical order, but they looked terrible. Now I have them sorted into red box releases, original grey checkered releases, then into specific companies. EA is divided, like some others have mentioned, into white box sports releases and standard games.

NES boxed are alphabetical. NES carts, alphabetical, but all the unlicensed carts are at the end of the rows, sorted alphabetically within a certain cart style (ie, all the Tengen carts together, followed by Camerica, etc)

Intellivison boxed are alphabetical, but the Sears telegames releases are at the end on their own. Atari 2600 are alphabetical, by manufacturer.

I guess everything is sorted in it's own way. :)

For the GOAT Store, as much as possible is stored by new / used first, then based on box / instructions, and then alphabetically. If you have 1000 NES games and you are looking for one, it is easiest to figure out what you are looking for first (cart with box, just cart, cart with box and instructions, etc) and then look through that area alphabetically.

Personally, I tend to put the third party releases in a different spot. For NES for instance, I have all of my Nintendo-released NES carts in alpha order except for Captain Comic and Tengen Tetris, which are kept off to the side.

For my 2600, same thing -- I sorted by Activision or Atari (or misc other carts... I only have one or two from other manufacturers usually) and then by alphabetical. I wouldn't dare do that with the GOAT Store though because if I forgot who made a certain cart, it would take me a lot longer to find it.

I think sorting into sub-categories based on looks is the best way for display based sorting, and sorting strictly by alpha is best for quick location of items.

Does this apply for N64 carts too if you collect them? It would really be cool, I think, to see all the N64 carts colors lined up.

I go alpha by system with all carts. As much as i'd like to run the tengen set in it's own row...doubt that I will. Same goes for the 2600 activision set(which I am five carts from finishing..) doubt I will.
Disc games are another story. Most of the playstation and playstation 2 crap is mixed together and separated by developer. I really need to split it and alpha it soon...VERY soon. ARGH!

My collection is sorted by alphabet except my Genesis/MD games.

All my Genesis games in the case are sorted in no particular order except they are grouped by sequals (Revenge of Shinobi--->Shadow Dancer--->Shinobi 3). The same rules would apply if i had a bigger collection of MD Games.

Anything cart-only is usually seperated into Genesis & MD games, and thier order is usually dictated by order of purchase &/or if i also own the games (possible) sequal(s).

Most of my collection is in storage at the moment. My X-Box is the only system I have set up right now. The few games I own for it can easily fit into one of two categories:

Racing
Pinball

Wait, I almost forgot about Red Dead Revolver X_x. I've been watching Deadwood on DVD lately and was feeling in a western mood so I picked it up. That means three categories:

Racing
Pinball
Ill-Advised Spur of the Moment Purchase (subcategory:Western)

If I had enough Genesis games to do this, I would -- I have them alphabetical right now, though. Doesn't look too bad with just one row. :hmm: Most everything I have is alphabetical, but I have PSX and MD/J games sorted by part number. The MD/J ones are obvious, but for Playstation it's just somehow easier for me to find them this way. ;)

I tried it with PS2 games, but that didn't work so well...

System, region, color/cartshape, developer, genre.

Especially useful for finding games that have tiny ass little Kanji on the spine. If the lighting is insufficient I might bonk my nose into some of those PCE games.

Sometimes I actually obssess over arrangement when it looks funny. Especially stuff like Japanese HuCases that are so non uniform in colour.

Carts that don't have top labels bother me also. That's why I try to have as few loose SFamicom, Famicom, N64, Jag, etc. carts as I can afford to.

Funny shaped loose VCS carts are another thing, but like hell if I'm crazy enough to find boxes for all of those....

I need better shelving also I suppose. Otherwise I would have pictures of my collection up. Limited space makes things a lot harder.

Most of my games are just arranged alphabetically too makes them easier to find the exception being the Megadrive ones which are alphabetically but split into Black-check/blue-spotted/EA-Other and the XBox which has all the Sega ones on a seperate shelf (near half of my XBox games are Sega ones)

No, I just list by System > Alphabetical. It gets me by just fine. I wouldn't arrange them like that, unless I had a complete "sub-set" to arrange. You know, such as all the black box NES games.

robotriot

I've currently got my Megadrive games sorted by box design, and a tiny subsection for Japanese games.

Same thing for Dreamcast, where I've got the Japanese games first, then the PAL ones (alphabetically always).

I put all my old Amiga games (those with the smaller boxes) together, but they're unsorted. Don't have enough room, I just have to fit them in there somehow ;)

As for the CD32, which is the system I've got the most titles for, I used to sort them by colour at first, but now I put them all back into alphabetical order, it's just easier to find something that way. I also printed out stripes of paper with game names for titles that don't have a CD cover, so that I can find them more easily.
