So, when are you going to publish a Digital Press Anthology? C'mon, put all the issues together; I know a lot of people (myself included) who would pay for the complete DP collection.

BTW, how about a thread of your favorite fanzine covers over the years? I'm thinking something like Pat Reynolds' classic ladybug cover of Fantazine; how about it?

You guys do realize that such a tome would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 pages, right? :o

:-D

Might be a little cost prohibitive, but a beast like that *would* be pretty cool...

And with a little luck, #50 (!!) will be out by the end of the month. 8-)

Well, there is an alternative. Perhaps they could be turned into Adobe Acrobat documents and a CD-ROM could be released. I think Chris Cavanaugh was leaning toward that in the twilight days of Classic Gamer Magazine, and it would certainly make sense for a project of this magnitude - and would cost less than a print version.

I had a great cover planned for "Fandom Is Dead", but then you disappeared. Where the hell have you been?

Daniel Thomas... should I know you? What fanzine did you publish?

IIRC, "V", ex "Videogame Experience"...

Towards the end of his involvement in fandom, he was trying to get a co-op zine called "Fandom Is Dead" together. I found a nice cover for the Slap-Dash edition of "FID", but it never got off the ground as far as I know, and it was about then I lost track of Dan.

For years I thought "Danelectro" of GamePro fame was Dan Thomas (since he was a musician), but it's actually Dan Amrich... Oops!

Yeah, you might be right. I might have made a bad assumption from "Dan Thomas" & Minneapolis.

Sorry if I've confused you Dan! If you're not the guy who edited "V", my apologies!

No, Russ, don't apologize, you're right! I didn't think anyone remembered my old zine. The full name is DTM, but I usually stick with the first and middle-name; more of a semi-formal thing. Remember I live in the same town as Prince Rogers Nelson. Maybe it's just a Minnesota thing. It's just easier, as an artist, to go by DT.

I did write for GamePro years ago, but it was under the moniker "The Eternal Cheesehead." Damn, I hated having to use pen-names. I also hated having my reviews censored of any critical remarks (a shameless ploy to keep the advertisers happy), so I left. I also did some freelance work for a short-lived gaming magazine called NewType Gaming. The quality of the magazine was poor (basically just a toy catalog), and it never paid, but it was work.

You know, it's been ages since I tossed around the FID idea; I completely forgot about it. Just as well, since by then I was nowhere near a computer and was trying to find some direction in my life (like pretty much every other early-twentysomething). I never knew if anyone took that idea seriously, but it's great to hear that Russ came up with a cover.

As for a fanzine anthology, the thought had occured to me, now and then, to write a book about the gaming zines of the early '90s. There would be conversations and/or essays by many of the major players, a "where are they now" featurette (for instance, Chris Johnston at EGM), covers and excerpts from as many zines as possible, and so on. So who's up for that? How many people out there still have copies of all the old zines?

I have - quite literally - a TON of "old zines", as I'm sure Jess and Russ do. I'd be happy to participate. You know where to find me!

Well then, hello again!

I didn't think anyone remembered my old zine.

You sent an issue with a slice of toast glued to it... Who's going to forget that?

I did write for GamePro years ago, but it was under the moniker "The Eternal Cheesehead."

Ah, you know, I probably knew that at some point but forgot. But you're not from WI, so how can you be a Cheesehead?

Yes, I remember that, and an article detailing exactly how they hacked up one of your reviews...

I remember NTG -- 7 issues IIRC; got them all.

(Hmm, an aside -- does anybody remember High End? Were there ever more than 1 or 2 issues?)

I've been thinking about Slap-Dash... There's one other cover I want to do, then I thought about using the FID cover as the last Slap-Dash. But of course, to do so would require actually doing two issues of it, which I'm not even thinking about until I can catch up 2600 Connection again.

By "book" do you mean a DIY thing with a small projected readership? Because I'm not sure that a "real book" would even break even... But other than that, I'd be interested I suppose.

How many people out there still have copies of all the old zines?

I sure do, but then again, there were a lot of them I missed too.

Ha! I completely forgot about the toast! What the hell was I drinking back then?

As for the Wisconsin thing ("cheesehead"), you know about that Minnesota/Wisconsin rivalry. In reality, it's more of a rivalry on the Minnesota side of the border. I never figured out why that is.

As for the book idea, I think it would be better to write something first, and then go shopping for a publisher. I really wouldn't care who the publisher is, as long as I'm getting paid.

Melted butter?

So, you picked "Eternal Cheesehead" just to be contrary to your roots?

I think the rivalry -- at least as far as football -- has grown a bit over the years. In the past I'd say that it was bigger for MN than WI because we already had IL as our rival. Why tack on another? But then the Vikes started getting cocky...

Well, what I mean is, I'm not sure there are any publishers who'd touch that one... I mean, combine videogaming which is mildly trendy right now, but mostly still for strategy guides only, and fanzines, which are DIY for a reason... What publisher would pick up a book of that combination? Just seems unlikely to me, so I'd plan for small press or DIY publishing. If you write it first without planning a possible DIY release, you might find that you've spent a lot of time for "nothing".
