View Full Version : N64 games seem quite pricey at Retail

Just browsing through the collection of N64 carts at various GameCrazy's and places of that nature, and it seems that N64 games are quite expensive.

I mean, you go to GameCrazy and you see tons of loose N64 carts that have tons of rental stickers on them, and they've been marked up with permanent marker pens, etc, etc. For some reason it seems that it's hard to find loose N64 carts that are completely clean, with the labels in good shape.

Anyways, you go to these GameCrazy's and places like that, and the prices are like $9.99, $14.99, $12.99, $19.99, $24.99, etc, etc for the loose N64 games. Sure, some of them are $4.99 and a few really old sports games are like $1.99 or $2.99, but most of the stuff seems to be in the $13 ish range or so.

The N64 games seem to cost quite a bit more than PS1 games or Dreamcast games. Even for the non marquee titles.

The only thing that I can conclude about this, is that there are still lots of kids out there with N64 systems, and they come in and convince their parents to buy a few games for them at these ridiculous prices. So places like GameCrazy and GameStop keep the prices at this high level.

You would think the parents would look at the prices of the PS1 or Dreamcast games and get one of those systems instead, but they probably have so much invested in so many N64 games, that they feel they need to stick with that system.

So, have other people noticed this, or am I just totally out of the loop in terms of the values of N64 games?

GameCrazy's N64 games are too expensive... so are the online EB and GameStops...

But EB games sell them for pretty cheap in-store, bought 3 games the other day (Banjo Kazooie, Blast Corps, and Jet Force Gemini) for 2.99 (2) and 4.99 (1). Games that would have cost about 7.99 - 14.99 at Game Crazy, or 5 and 10 on the online store.

I'd agree Anthony1, its one of the systems i collect for. But i did go into a GameCrazy once to see that games like Zelda OoT and Mask was somthing like 24.99 and Mario 64 was 19.99. Grant it they are great games but i went down the street to a GameStop and got Majora's Mask GOLD CART no permanent marker, no rental labels, almost pefect for 12.98. So Far the only place that has N64 games at the right price that i use is some Pawn Shops and EBay

GameStop's prices aren't too bad, generally. The high demand ones will run up the price a bit (Mario Party/Kart/Golf/Tennis, etc.), but the majority of games will cost less than 10 bucks. JFG is a steal at 3, for example.

You think that's bad, There is this store called Hastings nearby in my area that sells DVD's/games/music/books/ect. And the main focus in games is on the new stuff of course, but yet they have about 10 N64 games(all complete, but used) for, are you ready for this... $40 to $50 Dollars @_@

None of the games are really rare either, Road Rash 64, Kirby 64, Resident Evil 2, Fighting Force 64, ect.

While I would like to get a couple of those, I'm not going to be paying the price of an Xbox or PS2 game for them. LOL

Most of EB's N64 games are under $10 as well, basically with the exception of the Mario games (which we can't keep in stock) and a few others.

That's 'cause GameCrazy is a pretty crappy store... *mumble* worst two months of my life managing there.

Since GameCrazy is owned by Hollywood Entertainment (which also owns Hollywood Video) most of their N64 games either come directly from the Hollywood Video they're attached to or from the GameCrazy distribution centers which again, get most of their N64 stuff from Hollywood Video.

Actually I'm pretty much done as a whole with buying used CD based games from GameCrazy (especially PS1 games) since the last FIVE titles I've purchased had unfixable damage not caused by an outside source, but by THEM. Clearly the scratch patterns were caused by a spinning circle moving in the opposite direction of the spinning disc... what could cause that? Hmm.. oh wait, I know - that stupid CD buffing machine that none of them seem to know how to use! They won't BUY a game in that condition but they'll sure as hell SELL you one.

one thing you can do at ebgames.com is they have a select list of n64 games, and you can pick out 15 of them for $50 (use your eb edge card and coupon SAVER and get them for $45 shipped) so thats only $3 a game. its not the best selection, but if you are trying to get a bunch of games for a decent price, thats an option!

Which ones in particular? The Mario Party games? Golf? Tennis? Mario 64? Kart?

Just curious!

I've bought many decent/rarer N64 games at ebgames.com with CAG15, SAVER, and an edge card you can get them shipped free with 25% off the price. I paid $2-6 each for them and I got stuff like Mischief Makers, Goemon, and some of the R5's. Best thing to do is get up for the morning update and use the coupon codes. For the in demand titles (Mario, Kirby etc.) I usually pick them up in pawnshops, fleas, or in cheap ebay BINs. Good N64 BINs seem to be quite plentiful because many inexperienced game sellers are just now selling their N64 games to get a new console. I won a Paper Mario not too long ago for $6 shipped in a BIN and both Zelda's for under $10.

As an N64 collector I'll admit that yeah, it can get nuts. I own all mint or near-mint completes. I'm going to be buying loose carts now to accelerate my collection's completeness. Trying for completes has slowed my purchases down to a crawl. I'll pay $50 for a complete if it's clean and something that I want. The cart media tend to last a long while and it's still "sorta" a current system so yeah, I find that the games are holding their retail values. If you're going to collect N64, you just have to suck it up, pay the prices and don't dwell on it too much.

I want to be set already when the system gets the attention of collectors because I don't think that it's happened yet, but might soon. The system's only just entering it's 9th year.

I also have a Hastings store near me and I remember they had some N64 games for selled used but in box for crazy prices also around $25-$40 if I remember correctly

Hastings is where I buy the majority of my used PS2 games though they sometimes sell used PS2 and Xbox games for incredibly low prices sometimes new I got Toca Race driver 2 (PS2) NEW for $5 for example.

Its the same store that has basically stopped selling anything used for Gamecube they still sell new GC systems and games but nothing used for it at all :hmm:
