choose a theme and collect titles under that category then moved to next... or if you like particular franchise/character collect anything with that...
see my sig for some of my SS/DC and other collections... (hope you are on BB)
I've been collector for over decade now and my advise is set the limit and stick by it and do NOT think how much you spend last month... :p

Well there are sooo many questions when starting a Sega Master System collection!!
1. Do you collect loose or complete!?
2. Do you collect brazillian & european releases?
3. Do you start to collect Gamegear stuff too because some of the games are virtually identical?
4. Do you obtain both models of the systems and all the variants?
5. Do you have a DP Guide!?!?!! If so, get cracking! If not, get one!
I suggest gobbling up lots of common games to create the bulk of your collection, then get the rarer items. (I.e 3-d glasses) I personally would collect only complete, since its pretty easy to find games complete for the Sega Master System! Good Luck and welcome aboard!

As far as I know, no one else will ever have a truly complete Genesis collection as Portnoyd has the only copy of the Blockbuster World Video Game Championship II cart in collectors hands.
Of course, I could be very wrong, but I think I remember a discussion about it some time ago. Besides, we could get into a big debate on if games like that really make a collection complete or not, but for my purposes, they do.
But this won't keep ME from trying for a complete Genesis collection once Saturn and Dreamcast are wrapped up (and I can stay away from expensive MVS carts and Saturn shmups...)

I was not aware of this, Dave can we see some pics of this? Just in case we come across this in the wild of course ;)

The only rule to remember is there are no rules:
Collect what you want, buy games you want to play, don't feel you 'have' to buy every single game for a system, don't fret about what constitutes a 'complete collection' or not - if you end up feeling you 'have' to buy certain games for whatever reason even if you have no real interest in them then it's going to start feeling like a chore rather than a hobby and that's not what it's all about.
That said, you've picked an extremely fine format :) I'm not entirely impartial on this, but the Master System is first-class choice - loads of great games, many of the best are pretty common & cheap (especially if you don't mind getting European copies instead of some of the rarer US titles - they're [almost] all universal), and there's a whole plethora of interesting imports & oddities from Europe, Brazil & Australia (aswell as Japan & Korea if you can get hold of the necessary hardware).
If you're not already aware of it, have a look at segamastersystem.com and it's forums - there's a steadily growing community of SMS nuts there and plenty of good deals to be had. The DP Buying/Selling forum is invaluable aswell.
Welcome aboard! :)
I agree. The Master System is a wonderful little system to start with. Lots of good games at cheap prices.

If I can offer one piece of advice about this hobby, it's that being obsessive about it will ruin all the fun of it. Playing a wide variety of games and snagging that rare one that you always wanted to try is lots of fun, but when you start getting really obsessive about things and going for complete collections, and demanding that things be boxed and in pristine collection can very quickly cause you to burn out and lose interest entirely. Remember that games are supposed to be fun, not some chore. It sounds stupid, but you'd be surprised how many people lose sight of it.

Great thread.
I think identifying one platform to collect for when you're starting out isn't a bad choice. But most of us collect for multiple platforms at any one time, and I think this is a better way to work personally.
I agree with the comments that warn against becoming obsessive and compulsive. Fun is the aim of the game, here. I've certainly got a list of games that I don't want to play, but I want to have to make my collection more complete. For instance, I have no desire to play Sim City 4, but I'll pick it up at some point. It's not a priority, but it is something I've got to get eventually.
Usually, if there is a game I don't want to play, but I want for my collection, then I try and time the buy just right. I don't want it to get re-released under a classics range if I can avoid it, but I want the price as low as it can go.
For the older consoles, I'm happy to pick up anything and everything if it is a good deal. And if I don't like it, I'm not too downbeat. It's just the luck of the draw, and I like boxes/manuals sometimes more than the game. :)
Sorry if I babbled.

I congratulate you for targeting the SMS for collecting purposes. It will be easier for you to track down the SMS games as you are focusing on just one system, not multi systems as most of us do. A great advice is to get your DP guide, it will be really helpfull if you plan to get all the US SMS games.

Personally, I think fixating about one system is the wrong way to proceed. Whilst finding SMS games, you will stumble on other interesting items that will add to the richness of the overall collection. You will cetainly get bored fast if you force yourself to ignore other gaming systems.
I tend to have seasons. At the moment it is Megadrive season which will stop once I reach the 200. It will then be quite interesting choosing a new system to fixate on and learn more about.
Once you have read all of these posts, the only thing that will be clear is do what we all do - what makes you happiest.
