View Full Version : The demise of Coleco is almost upon us!

Can you read the writing on the wall?
I have a prediction that I feel the need to share because I'm rather smart.
The ColecoVision is nearing its end. This so-called "third wave" game console simply doesn't provide the kind of graphics today's gamers are looking for.
On the one hand, it's trying to cover the older, popular games by giving gamers access to the Atari 2600 library (using expansion module #1), and on the other hand, it's trying to be "cutting edge" with its fancy high resolution sprites, but these don't quite measure up to the things you see on Xbox or PS2. So in the end, it does neither well.
What they should have done was create a DVD-based system with HDTV compatibility, trilinear mip-mapping, and dual analog controllers with rumble features. Not this clunky box of a console.
And I fear that the new PlayStation and Xbox will finish them off for good too! Especially seeing as how the gaming theatre is getting a little crowded now...
I mean take a look at these graphics. Even the naked eye can pick out the superior quality of PS2 and Xbox games:

Now, just try telling me I'm wrong and I'll just pretend I never saw your post.

...however, the Intellivision certainly has enough power to compete against these so-called "next gen" consoles! ;)

Don't overlook the ease of use, simple controls the CV offers over the Xbox and PS2. CV must have a hell of an engine, virtually no load times over that of the PS2 and Xbox, don't have any down time between levels.

As for the comment on HDTV compatibility, wait until the Super Game Module is released this fall.

Joe, I hate to break ranks with you, but you've got this one dead wrong. Coleco's success with the head-to-head sports handhelds proves that they have the kind of market share it takes to last, even against Mattel's Electronic Football. Colecovision will make it, just wait and see. And before long, there'll even be an expansion module that'll turn it into a full-powered computer system. Will PS2 and Xbox have daisy-wheel printers and cassette drives anytime soon? I DON'T THINK SO.

And one other thing - with all these concerns about video games getting too violent...Coleco is a family company, aiming their games at a family market. Do you think we're ever going to see a Colecovision cartridge with an "M" rating symbol on it, ever? I DON'T THINK SO.

You forgot about online, man. Coleco missed the boat on the one. That's the future of gaming right there. Coleco's audacity in releasing a console without out-of-the-box abilities to support the mammoth MMORPG potential of RPG's like BC's Quest For Tires or team competitions in Smurf: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle just baffles me to this day
Granted, the CV's got that big ol' expansion port on the front. But how dumb do they think we are? Like we're going to wait around for Expansion Module #4 - Ethernet Adapter? Didn't they promise that for the first spring after launch? By the time that comes out I'll be onto my PS3, thank you very much.

All I have to say is, "thank you' to Joe for coming up with something that pokes fun of all the stuff being posted about certain systems that are gonna die.

I think Colecovision might have one more card up their sleeve if they plan a major release on the PS3 launch day just as Microsoft is doing with their planned release of the new religous title, an odd step for such a mature console, Halo 3. This might backfire in their face with the the growing demand of violent first person shooters. Another noah's ark 3d perhaps?

Yeah, I know Colecovision's gonna die, but I know it more than any of you because I'm smarter than any of you. No music? No movies? No internet? What exactly are we supposed to do with this thing anyway? Face it, Coleco is DEAD. They've never been more DEAD in their lives, and they're so DEAD they're not coming back. Even if they release the greatest system next generation, nobody will buy it because it will be terrible and Coleco will DIE. If you disagree with me, its because your an idiot and I'm t3h R0X0R.

Unfortunately, I agree. The Colecovision is just a wee bit too underpowered right now. I mean, unless Colecovision suddenly comes out with the Palm OS, I'm writing the ADAM off too.

Apparently somebody hasn't heard about Coleco's new killerp app they are releasing ... Super Duper Ultra Mega-Awesomenerer. It does everything the PS2 and Xbox can do ... only awesomenerer
Sorry goatdan no Palm Os though.

The Colecovision isn't dead. I can't understand where all this hatred for the Colecovision comes from. Good games are good games, no matter what, and will be played.
Gamers don't want powerful graphics, better resolution, and high tech stuff like the NES and Genesis and PS2 deliver. They want innovative games, short games, fun games, simple games they can pick up in five minutes and play for 30 minutes; the president of Coleco said so himself....gimme a break with these long and complex Zelda and Metroid stuff, God of War is doomed, not the Colecovision.
Colecovision will find a niche, and will survive, it is a cash cow. It is for the true gamer who doesn't care about shallow stuff like graphics, but cares about if games look good.
...and after all, the Colecovision has a soul, a SOUL I'm tellin' ya, show me the soul of the Xbox...then we'll talk.

What's with this newfangled Coleco stuff?
Who needs ICs when you have all kinds of fun resistors and capacitors right there in the Magnavox Odyssey.... (and not that awful one that uses those vulgar, unchristian, "joystick controllers". I know better than to fall for such euphemisms.
Forget HDTV. Real games play just fine on oscilloscopes.
And if the Odyssey (which only works on a newfangled Magnavocks how do you say, "tereveedeo" by necessity...) breaks, just imagine all the fun you can have building circuits and testin them with yer scope.
Solid state. Heh... Squalid state.
And don't be taken in by vect her graphics. No self respecting girl would ever allow herself to be vected. It's the height of depravity. Says so raight hea in da book o Dumbferotomies.
Damn kids with their spirographs and rock em' sock em robots! The road to hell is paved with fancy-pants plastic tinkertoys. Wood is good dammit!!
show me the soul of the Xbox...then we'll talk.
I would, but then the men in white coats would show up....
Some things are best not seen by mortals.
Everyone knows that the Xbox is but a tool of the elder gods dude.... I shouldn't have told you that......

Don't listen to DP, he's just trying to practice "The Art of Trolling".
I mean, how could Coleco ever go wrong? They have Donkey Kong, for chrissakes!!! Try to find DK on the PS2 or the Xbox, you won't!!!!
And does Sony or Microsoft sell you those cool Cabbage Patch Kid dolls (they're all different! try to see how many you can collect!) or that cute green Turtle wading pool? Didn't think so!!!
I'm sure we'll talk about Coleco long after Sony and Microsoft are gone.

*takes some of what everyone else is taking* Nothing happens.
*takes some MORE* There we go...it's all clear to me.
What the Colecovision needs to stay competitive with the other consoles is to come up with an attachment to hook up their handheld games to the console itself and play head to head to head to head with other people on the television.
Either that or it needs to come out with new colors...like Nuclear Green and Atomic Purple.

Stop this thread now, end it PLEASE! Don't you people have nothing else to discuss? Where are those DP moderators when you need them? Lock it, I can't take it anymore.

In Iraq they're selling now Xboxes and corrupt longstanding identities, that's the prob, not the Colecovision)
Every week, EVERY week, I have to read a 'Colecovision is doomed' thread. Tell you what, this topic is dead, not the Colecovision!!!!!!!!!!! (!!!)
Here are my two dimes about the topic I don't wanna know about and there is nothing to discuss:
Nomen est omen! The Colecovision has just that: a VISION! It will revolutionize gaming as we know it, just be patient, wait a couple of minutes, and those allegedly simple sprites will take over the world and leave evil companies in the dust. Colecovision cares about gamers, others care about money. (just picked up a cartridge in a thrift dirtcheap, saved me a lot of money)

The ColecoVision has the Adam add on! It becomes a fully fledged computer that can do computer type stuff! You can even save things on tapes. PS2? You can have YABASIC.. wow.. big whoop! And XBox? Gentoo Linu.....

Hey, try to find another console whose chip is on a space probe! Go ahead, just try!
Let me clue all of you in on some FACTS, not OPINIONS about these old systems, because some of your ignorance sickens me to the point of feeling sick about how ignorant you are in your lack of knowledge.
With regard to The Vision by Coleco. (I'm sick of 21st century fanboys who've just come on to the scene and think they can impress people by just tossing around "combined" words like Colecovision.) I hate to break it to you, but this system is going nowhere and if history is any indicator, it will soon be EMULATING the Xbox and the PS2. Look how quickly this cameleon system was able to fool people into thinking they were playing VCS games on an actual VCS!
I'd also like to correct a previous poster regarding what he or she called, *chuckle* the "Intellivision".
It's spelled "Intel-a-vision" and was Intel's first attempt at making a machine that output video directly to a TV. Don't be too hard on yourself, a lot of people don't know that.
Other shining stars that The Vision by Coleco soundly defeated was:
Atari's "Fifty to Hundred" (named after early estimates on how many carts would come out for it)
Vector-X named as such because nobody knew where it would go.
And, of course, the least known but most interesting,
Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Arcadia 2001 After seeing the success of the game "Journey's Escape", a group decided to name an entire console after itself.
Please feel free to ask me any questions about this period of time because most of you were still in your fathers' sacks when I was actually playing these systems.
I'll soon be publishing a book, Penumbra: The Darkening and Lightning of Videogames. Starting with the very fist videogame system: Simon! Invented by Ralph Bear, It came out in 1972 and instead of using video it used lights with plastic cels that overlaid the lights to create the "colorful lights" that were the precursor to modern videogames like Pong! that didn't even use color!
Sorry, I could talk about this stuff all day. Oh, so my point was we can't trust the opinon of someone who doesn't even know the proper name for The Vision by Coleco.
Mr. Smashy

If the ColecoVision is nearing its end, why is a slightly modified used system and a few common games selling for way more than a brand new Xbox or PS2?

I blame the casual gamers for all this end of Coleco talk. They need to take their heads out of their asses and see that 2D is where it is at. And only casual gamers would use something like a memory card, or battery backup. Hardcore gamers play until their thumbs bleed and never turn the system off so they do not lose their high score. Eat that you casual gamers!!!
P.S. I have not bought any of the systems mentioned, but all of my friends have so I feel I am very knowledgeable.
