I picked up a copy of NHL Hitz Pro on Xbox this weekend (which I had been seeking for ages), and when I got it home I realized that it was so scratched up that it wouldn't even load properly. So after calling EVERY GAMESTOP IN THE TWIN CITIES, I finally found ONE place that had one. So I went and exchanged it, and as luck would have it...
That copy didn't work either. And because it was part of a buy 2 get 1 free deal, I'm not able to get my money back without returning EVERYTHING I got, and I don't really feel like doing that. Essentially, I'm stuck with a defective game unless I can find one (at a Gamestop) as soon as possible.
I'm sorry to rant, but I guess you could say that I'm really steamed about this whole thing. So...anyone else feel my pain?

Well you could take them all back but request to hold the games you wanted then look around for a diffrent used game you want.
I had to do that a few times in the past and they always let hold onto them.
that is of course if the promotion is going on.

Surprisingly enough, in all the disc-format games I've bought, I only recall one or two games that wouldn't work right. One was a game where a game sticker somehow getting on the game side and leaving a residue that prevented the disc from being read properly. That was part of a multi-disc mail order and I just tossed it, figuring it would be too much trouble to deal with. I think I may have had one other game that kept freezing up...but that was basically it. Since I do buy a number of used games, I'm surprised that it hasn't happened more often.

Most pawn shops or CD shops will resurface CD's for a nominal fee. Could be a cheap/speedy solution.

Yes, get it resurfaced. Usually 3 bucks, and usualy independant record stores have them.

That's my plan for tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I think I'm gonna hold out for a while. I'd really rather not return the other stuff I got...it just seems like a hassle (and I don't know if I'd find anything else I wanted anyway).
Theoretically, I have 90 days to find another one in working order (which is probably more than enough time), and I'm bound to end up in places besides the Twin Cities in that time. In fact, I'll probably be in Duluth (2+ hours north of where I live, for those who don't know) to pick up my g/f next week and there are two GS's up there. So, to summarize: Now that I'm not as mad, I see that I have plenty of options. I feel much better. :)

Go back and shove it down their throats sideways. Put some cayenne pepper on it to make it tingle :P
Seriously though, they should at least stand behind their product as working and allow you to return defectives without forcing you to return EVERYTHING. That's just weird.

Whoa... wait they won't even let you exchange it for a game of equal value? I'd bitch to a manager.

That sucks big time! But it's no surprise to me that it's an X-Box game that you face the problem with. I've bought a lot of used games for PS, PS2 and X-Box and only with the X-Box games I'm facing problems. If they are not super clean and unscratched I have loadingproblems immediately. Seems like this consoles is a bit overreacting to old games. But I still think it's a shame that the shop didn't test the game. I you buy games for a Cash Collector store (as I do) then you can maybe expect to get some trouble from time to time, but with a game store that's just poor.

one time that happened to me, i was buying i think splinter cell at either gamestop or EB (again, i forget) and i took the game out of its case right after buying it, and it was scratched on the back of the disc, i mean the actual foily part had a big gouge in it. i took it right back and they gave me a nice clean unscratched copy. that's why i reccommend alwys checking used games for scratches before you even leave the mall. (or wherever it is, you get the point)

You're talking to the man who has bought and returned 4, yes, 4 copies of Ico. Not a single one worked. :( I have the feeling some higher power doesn't want me to ever play it for some reason.
I bought a Game doctor recently, though, and It works wonders on scratched games. It's a good investment, IMO. I think I'll try buying Ico one more time now...

I could if I could find anything (but, for some reason...I'm picky...and appearantly stubborn).
I've tried resurfacing once before, and it didn't work (the scratch was too deep), but this one looks a lot more fixable. I'm gonna go try it out now...wish me luck. :)

That's why I ALWAYS look at the disc before I hand my money over. I guess that doesn't guarantee that you're home free either, though...

From what I'm reading here, it sounds like your drive is starting to die. If your Xbox has a Thompson drive it's not much of a surprise, being that Thompson drives aren't that reliable.
Anyways, pacmanhat, how scratched up is your current copy? You might be having drive problems with your Xbox too. Do you have access to another Xbox you can test the game on? In any case, I hope things get worked out.
