Super Smart Joy USB adapter for SNES controllers on PC's

Recently I was bumping around Ebay, and I stumbled on the Super Smart Joy USB adapter that allows you to use actual SNES controllers on your PC.

I decided to get it, mostly for use with GBA emulation, but I also used it with SNES emulation, and it really worked very well.

It's nice to use a real freaking controller with the emulation. The thing is, if you have the ability to go TV out on your PC, and you hook it up to a TV, and then use the real controller, it's almost like you suspend belief that you are playing on a emulator instead of the real thing.

I will always prefer the real deal over emulation, but emulation is really nice to try out imports and other games that aren't cheap, and easily attainable.

And if you are going to emulate stuff, might as well use the real freaking controller to give you that extra sense of authenticity.


The one thing that does bother me, is the fact that nobody has done this for the XBOX yet. The XBOX does emulation of the NES and Genny and SNES so damn well, that if you could use the actual controller, it would just be a real nice option.

I agree with you and would like to try this out myself. Now you’re not going to get to many responses to these questions as the majority of the posters on here are strongly against this sort of thing, be it the modding or the supposed pirating which is ludicrous, etc. But anyway, try googleing it, it's hard to find info though, although I'm pretty sure there is a way to just solder a special SNES connector to one of the expansion ports on the Xbox controller and have the SNES controller work through the Xbox controller replacing a few of its buttons. You could also get a USB to Xbox adapter from Lik-Sang and plug your super Smart Joy into it, but you would need special drivers for that to work. Alternatively I suggest you buy a PS2 Street Fighter Anniversary Collection controller and get a PS2 to Xbox adapter, that way you won't have to do any modding. Those SFAC controllers are really really nice, too bad they didn't sell very well which canceled the Xbox version of them. They have 6 buttons in the same pattern as the Genesis and PCE/TG16 and 2 shoulder buttons just like the SNES and 3DO as well as Start and Select. It's the perfect controller for good old retro gaming.

You can also use a real GBA to control Visual Boy Advance - you just need a cheap flashlinker cable (15-20$)

I was going to buy one of those but it was too expensive for me, so I started on modifying an SNES controller to plug into the PC through the parallel port. Part ways through doing this however I got more money and found out about the wonderful Superflash cartridge and bought one of those instead. I've heard great things about the super smartjoy however, Snes9x endorses it on their site so it must be good!

what i suggest for those who have roms on their xbox to do is this. buy a retrocon from mad catz (which you can get at best buy for $5 if they still have them in stock) and buy one of these http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=166&products_id=1892& and hook them together and you have a ps2 controller shaped like a old nes one to play your roms with. its not perfection, but it works very very well

Yeah, the Super Smartjoy is great. The only problem is that you cannot simultaneously press Y and A together. Because of a bug in Snes9x, it actually works for it, but there are few games where this is a significant problem.
