My latest import is a Ninja Princess (aka Sega Ninja) PCB off eBay. :)

I got ahold of Ninja Spirit (PCB) and Aleste II for MSX2 some time ago as well.

Got some handful of FC games, upgrades mainly, but the one I remember is a "new" Getsu Fuuma Den. It'll be nice to have a manual.

Guess this means the old one is going by the wayside soon.

Though I don't have it, YYH Final is better.

I personally see the cinema style gameplay (I'm still trying to learn the damn thing) as a novelty in itself.

I love my PCE Duo. Got it boxed for about $50 and I love bragging about it. No extra RGB enhancements yet. I show my wife PCE games running and then switch video modes and show her the same game running on Wii (D4 connection) and it's really night and day. The Wii looks a lot nicer... although I do enjoy playing on the Duo with the PCE controller a lot more. My wife? She doesn't care about games at all. Bioshock (Korean Version)It it actually just the Asian version with Korean on the cover/back and instruction? I don't actually own any Korean games, but I do have a Korean X-Box (modded, which explains the lack of K-games) and a bunch of DVDs from when I lived in the RoK. They're all region 3.

50 bucks boxed! Grrr one of the perks of living in Japan? =) I don't think I'd be able to live in Japan. It would look like I as paid in games and electronics. hehe

Most "normal" people don't see the hub-bub about picture/video quality. I spend a lot of time/resources on various gadgets, high-end video processors, distribution amplifiers, converters/transcoders, cables, etc etc and rave about the picture quality, color purity/intensity, scaling, deinterlacing, noise reduction blah blah blah. However when I show it to friends/family they just don't get what's the big deal about it. oh well...

Don't really have D-Terminal inputs around here (except on my XRGB-2+, lol)... but an RGB modded PCE Duo on a Sony ProFeel CRT (aka PVM - Pro Video Monitor) is about as pure an image as you can get, as long as the geometry is calibrated correctly. Also got a Sony CRT with an actual JPN 21-pin RGB input coming in from Japan and picked up a Samsung LCD with SCART input last week out of SCART curiosity. The Sammy doesn't compare to a CRT for oldschool stuff, but looks pretty darn decent with SuperFamicom on an LCD.

It would look like I as paid in games and electronics. heheYeah, I guess you could say it's a perk. :) Most of those deals are found away from the popular places to buy games, like Akihabara. A boxed PCE Duo there is around $200. With the time to shop around that comes with living here, you can find better deals. Still, I have seem some decent deals in the main shops that tourists frequent occasionally.

On the other side of the coin, try finding an American system in Japan like an Atari 2600 or Jaguar for less than $200, or a Lynx for less than $150. Good luck with that.

I'm just happy that my wife acknowledged the differences! I just picked up a Mega Drive yesterday, and totally forgot how crappy the video that thing puts out is. I probably won't mod it, or my Genesis, since I can play the games on my Wii, X-Box or PC, but still... Sega could've been nice and at least provided S-video! For some reason, the MD/Genesis looks worse than other systems.

Of course I can run emulators from my PC onto my LCD monster, but my main (and only TV, in my "huge" Japanese apartment) is just a Trinitron flatscreen, widescreen CRT. To be honest, games to look pretty darned good on it. Even on the PS3, since it can do 720p/1080i with D-Terminal connections. Unfortunately, light guns don't work on it. I'm not a videophile, but I can definitely see the difference between a standard video cable, component/D-link and *gasp* RF.

Oh it definitely is. For a lot of us (including myself), I get 99.99% of my japanese console gaming and some arcade pcbs/accessories online. For me personally, a vast majority (2/3's or more) of that is via Yahoo Japan using a middleman service (due to lack of availability in other sources). Often times the middleman fees are more than the product itself by 2, 3, or even 4 times! Slap on shipping within japan and then to the US. The last 3 packages I received combined, the total shipping charges were in slight excess of 700 USD!!! Just for friggin shipping! Cost of goods plus middleman fees not included!

Just being able to even buy from Yahoo Japan locally and only pay final auction price plus internal shipping within japan hugely increases buying power. Not to mention exploring little unknown/untapped shops.

Main drawback for most foreigners living in japan is probably space. Most people can't go around collecting arcade machines there. lol, despite being able to snag some highway robbery deals on machines/cabs there. Sometimes a SEGA Astro City goes for 100 USD!

Bah who wants those?! j/p. Oh you have plenty of family/friends stateside that will take care of it at cost + shipping... or just pick it up when you come back for visits. =)
I also bet you many westerners would be willing to trade flea market finds stateside for some "second hand / store labelled junk items" you find over there! hehehe
I just love the japanese... clean product (by western standards), but old and "dirty" (repackaged very neatly in plastic).... so "please treat as junk item article"! Such a nice change of pace from ebay where people don't have any idea what "good" condition means.

Acknowledgement is half the battle! At least the megadrive can output RGB without modification. Many options available to "tap dat" (lol):

- MD RGB cables
- Micomsoft XMD-1 or XMD-3 to s-video
- MD RGB cables + Micomsoft XRGB-2/2+/3 to VGA or component via another transcoder
- MD RGB cables + AV Demillo to s-video

etc etc etc... All should look excellent on a CRT (especially a Sony, they rock).

Actually the Victor Wondermega (non JVC x-eye lookin one) I have has a stock s-video output. Not sure about the JVC x-eye, haven't dug that out of storage in a looong time.

If you like pre HD gaming I'd definitely keep a good quality CRT around. If your CRT can do 720p more power to you. Can't beat the black levels of a CRT. You might come visually close with a high end plasma (Pioneer Kuro Elite). Each era of gaming looks best on what it was designed to run on (at least for now). Lots of things you can do (pricey tho) to improve stock looks on a flat panel, but can never match or surpass it for SD sources anyways. Only drawback for CRT is it's size limitation. Howerver, for old school gaming I don't like it waaay too big or it looks too pixelated. Big big big (50-60" plus) only matters to me for movie watching.

So for my setup I keep:
- some CRTs sticking around for 0 lag and best possible picture for SD games.
- A couple LCDs (including 120Hz) modern sports games look great and smaller lcds for easy TATE mode for shmups
- and overall preference for HD gaming/movies... plasma. =)

I don't even have enough space to hook up my consoles. My PS3 and Wii are hooked up... and that's it. I play most of my names on Wii homebrew because it's a lot easier than digging through my closet for the equivalent system and game. I don't really go looking for arcade machines/cabs for obvious reasons! I'd have to rent a locker to store it in, and it would never get used.

Such a nice change of pace from ebay where people don't have any idea what "good" condition means. Some of the consoles and carts I find as "junk items" really are dirty. One of the shops that I frequent has a boxed Famicom that looks to be in very nice condition sitting next to a pile of discoloured and dirty Famicoms/Super Famicoms. The boxed Famicom is 4000yen, and the loose systems are between 200 and 800yen. I don't want the boxed system because it'll a pain to bring back to my own country.

My wife likes Tetris Plus, the Puzzle Bobble games, Puyo-Puyo games and Saturn Bomberman on the Saturn, so I have a great excuse to keep a Saturn in the bedroom! hehe Then again, perhaps I can think of more productive activities in that room...

Ugh, I would absolutely not collect if I had to pay those sorts of shipping/middleman fees. It's ludicrous how much shipping costs, even by ocean freight.

I'm a Yahoo! Auctions addict, but I tend to use it more for hard to find stuff (arcade stuff, tickets, etc). Small shops are the best!

The reason is because I have a PCE Duo but if I find a PCE for cheap I'll pick it up. If I don't have to buy another power adapter, then it makes things easier. I assume the original PCE, Coregraphx I & II and Supergraphx all use the same adapters as well.

Going by another thread here, my Mega Drive I power adapter or Neo Geo adapter should also work. I guess I could test it, but then I've got to dig out my boxed systems from the back of my closet. Maybe on the weekend.

Yeah the guy I used to buy japanese cabinets from would tell me how much he'd get them for in his trips to Japan to acquire stock. Doesn't help when I know what he's charging me. He also imported skylines too. His warehouse was a tiny little universe of all things awesome.

From what I understand, the PC Engine systems before 1991 do have the same AC jack the black Duo does.

But as of wattage, that's an iffy issue on my part. Best advice I can give you is to search around.

For those that have never physically been near a PC Engine, I got some pics to emphasize its tiny size.

Actually it's a bit yellowed, the flash on the camera gave it that clean illusion which isn't a bad thing really, it shows the yellowing didn't go too out of hand. I'm still going to disassemble the machine and soak the shells in bleach.

That's what I did for my Duo R controller. it too was once yellowed.

Not really. I've picked up a bunch of MVS carts on the cheap (only two of mine are pricey - Blazing Star and Sengoku 3 - the rest I've picked up for under $10 each). I've gotten a few Naomi games quite cheap as well. There aren't as many PCB deals to be had as cabinet deals, unfortunately.

The bleach didn't damage the blues, writing, etc of the shells? I like the white pce hardware, but it seems NEC went cheap w/ the plastics. So many of them yellow badly.

Yeah on the MVS... Even complete kits seem to go for very reasonable prices. Ah japan... stores where you can just walk in and buy arcade software/hardware. Man!

The design turned out fine, I'm not sure I recall, but I think I spread vaseline on the grey area where all the writing is before setting it in the bleach.

Here's a link worth checking out.

That's what I did for my Duo R controller. it too was once yellowed.Any idea of how to get rid of the yellowing on a grey Saturn?

*SLAPS FOREHEAD*

Only in Japan baby... only in Japan. An Egret 2 or AWSD for 350ish USD... drool! Any notable PCB finds in your hunts?

*SLAPS FOREHEAD AGAIN*

Yeah the guy I used to buy japanese cabinets from would tell me how much he'd get them for in his trips to Japan to acquire stock. Doesn't help when I know what he's charging me. He also imported skylines too. His warehouse was a tiny little universe of all things awesome.

.I found a Street Fighter 2 Turbo PCB for 10,000yen (about $100) for sale near me. I think is was Super Turbo... it might've been CE' for all I know. It's still for sale, AFAIK. I'll check again next time I'm in the shop that had it. I don't know much about PCBs. The kit seemed to include the game board, a 2-player joystick and I think a bunch of labels. I'm not really sure what an arcade kit is supposed to include, but it looked pretty cool. I might be off somewhat on the price and version of SFII, but it definitely was cheaper than I thought it would be.

Grey Saturn....can't help you right there. It's ok. You posted a pic of the white PCE with Salamander in it. I'm happy.

I've loved that game since I first played Life Force on the NES in 1988 or '89. I don't remember exactly. My friends and I abused the Komami code so much in that game. Lots of people loved Contra, but I'll take Life Force any day. Contra still rocks, though... just not as much as Life Force.

Just picked up Final Fight Revenge and Capcom Generations 1, 2 an 4 for Saturn off eBay. I know Revenge is awful, but, even though it's not cannon, it takes place in the Street Fighter universe. It's also kinda hard to come by.

The Capcom Generations were picked up to complete the set and they were in a lot for a decent price. Just need 3 now, already had 5 of course.

Next two Saturn imports I'm going after are Elevator Action Returns and Crows. Anyone got either for sale?

I've been back for a few days from my vacation to Tokyo and finally got over my jet lag. So I figured it was time to post photos of the games I bought. :D

http://schnuth.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/japan09-games-pce.jpg

One of my main wants were some PC Engine games. I got a pretty good haul, but did pass on a few I wanted since I didn't want to spend all my vacation cash on games. :) It was really hard to set limits on myself since your like a kid in a candy store in these game stores in Akihabara. It's pretty overwhelming to say the least.

http://schnuth.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/japan09-games-puyo.jpg

Another goal of mine was to fill some holes in my Puyo Puyo/Madoh Monogatari collection. While these do turn up online sometimes, I've had a hard time finding complete copies. I found just about everything I was looking for too. I really need to post some photos of my Puyo collection one of these days.

http://schnuth.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/japan09-games-pcfx.jpg

I also found a PC-FX for a good price and ended up grabbing it even though I didn't think I was going to buy many systems this trip.

http://schnuth.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/japan09-games-famiav-ddg-dc.jpg

Another thing I definitely wanted to come home with was a AV Famicom. That way I can play my Famicom games in comfort with standard US controllers with nice long cords. It did end up coming with a couple Japanese dogbones with the short cords though. The Densha De Go controller, the Famicom games, and Frame Gride were all found in the discount "Junk Boxes" of different stores I visited.

http://schnuth.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/japan09-games-psx-ss-misc.jpg

Only Einhander and Devil's Crush were games I specifically wanted, the rest all came from the ever friendly and awesomely cheap Junk Boxes. I've been wanting to try out the Gundam Side Story games since they are compatible with the Virtual On twin sticks. For 100 yen a pop who could refuse? :)

http://schnuth.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/japan09-games-sfc.jpg

I didn't intend to buy a Super Famicom system or games, but they were cheap and extremely plentiful so I finally caved in. I also grabbed some games from various Junk Boxes and discount bins. I think the complete games were 250 yen, while the loose ones were 50 to 300 yen each. The Super Gameboy was around 900 yen.

http://schnuth.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/japan09-games-r20-mgs4iphon.jpg

I also grabbed a Rockman 20th Anniversary Complete Works art book, and a MGS4 iPhone case at the Apple Store. I didn't know there were MGS iPhone accessories. Pretty cool!

I also grabbed a bunch of gaming and anime t-shirts from the Uniqlo UT store in Harajuku. Puyo Puyo, Street Fighter, Xevious, PaRapper, Densha De Go, Sonic, etc all for 990 yen each. Once they are out of the laundry I'll post some pics if anyone is interested.

I picked up the PC-FX at Trader 2 for just under 5,000 yen. It was in the display case, and the guy was nice enough to point out I'd need a memory card too. The AV Famicom set me back another 5,000 yen at Friends. It didn't have an AC adapter, but I ended up getting a universal one for it and the SFC for cheap at another store. AaronCome to think of it, I was looking at your very PC-FX a few weeks ago. You just got back to your country, right? I seem to remember thinking something like "that PC-FX is a pretty good deal, expect I can't think of any games that I'd ever actually want to play on it. I'll just buy that Mega Drive instead...".

BTW, Which one is Trader 2? I can never remember. The one behind the Sega arcade, or the one on the main street that's been turning its second floor into a damned cosplay store and getting rid a lot of its stuff in discount bins? Whichever one was getting rid of their stuff for cheap, it helped me start both my Neo Geo CD and AES collections. http://www.digitpress.com/forum/images/smilies/0803_cool.gif

edit: nevermind, I just checked and Trader 2 is the one behind the Sega arcade under the Sobu line. I was referring to the other Trader store above.

My SuperGraphx was quite reasonably priced - I can't remember exactly how much but it was in the 5000 yen or less range, IIRC. Now the Wondermega... Sheesh, I never see those at any price, pretty much.

My low-priced find fantasies involve a cheap Supervision 8000 (+ games!), Creativision, or a PV-1000... Yah, good luck with those.

My latest "great finds" were a Neo Geo Pocket Color (gray) for 525yen and Final Fight CD (Mega CD) for 315yen. Both were at Hard-Off. NGPCs are relatively common, so that wasn't a steal, but but was nice to finally pick one up for cheap. I'm really happy with finding Final Fight CD though, since I've never come across it outside of Akihabara and it was dirt cheap. Still had the spine card, even. Too bad I don't have a Mega CD to play it on. My Sega CD doesn't read Japanese games, so the only way I can play it is on my PC.

The only NGPC game I got was some pachinko game called "e-Cup". It was the only game they had and I needed something to test the system with.

Got a small and long-coming batch from the man, smork.

http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/2553/smork003.jpg

Details:

PS1 controllers - SCPH-1010s, these were the launch model PlayStation controllers and exclusive to Japan. The pros? Short cable and smaller form factor than the normal SCPH-1080s that most are accustomed too. Reason? Good for adapters(mods), if the need arise.

V-Saturn controller - RG-CP6, obtained for cool look.

Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec - NTSC-J, which means the elusive exclusive can be tested out without a GameShark. I'm referring to the Diablo GT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjBsetJGuDM).

Orbital - Simply a good bit Generations title.

Lode Runner The Legend Returns - Simple, fun, classic Lode Runner game-play.

Policenauts - I already have the PS1 original release iteration, which is the likely candidate for soonest to be translated but when the time comes for the Saturn version my Stunner and I will be prepared.

Sega Rally & Daytona CE - Good cheap racers on the Saturn.

GB Link cable - Since I didn't already have one.

Policenauts Limited Edition for Saturn (no spine card) - $AU2.25 on a rather lucky auction find. Honestly thought the guy would try to weasel out of the transaction. Normally I'd try to get one with a spine card, but this was too good a deal.

X-Men vs. Street Fighter for Saturn (w/ 4mb cart) - $AU34.95. Good condition, seems like nobody else in Australia is really after Japanese Saturn stuff, so I'm making out all right at the moment.

Kururin Squash for GameCube - new/sealed from Play Asia for $AU9.78. Just need the second one on the Game Boy Advance to complete the series.

Putting a hold on buying anything more for another couple of weeks, it's distracting me from working/saving. My fiancee and I have our eyes on a lot of stuff when we get back into it soon, but I think for now we should probably take a little time out to enjoy the stuff we've grabbed.

I just picked up a new Saturn a few days ago and used that game to test it with. Like a lot of used Saturns, I had to fiddle with the cart to get it to recognize... but it worked eventually. I think I picked up my copy for about $5... but then again I live in Japan so it's doable. If you play it, it's definitely worth the $35 you paid.
