I was playing Unreal tounemant a couple of minutes ago, and I noticed that my Dreamcast makes a mad loud whirring noise when it is on. Is this normal? Or do they all do that. I have had it for a year, and never noticed it. I did run a nester disc on it earlier today. Could that be why? Help me out. I love my dreamcast, and if I gotta replace it I wanna know now.

Nope they all do that its just the Gd drive. I have 3 DCs and they all make that noise.

I had forgotten how loud they were, I haven't played in a little while. My brother was so upset with this that he would put a pillow or blanket on top.

I told him, "Don't get pissed. It's thinking."

I am trying to imagine how I would feel if my PS2 was making this damn noise. I would probbly jump out a window.

That noise is normal. Its when is starts calling you "Hal" and singing "Daisy, Daisy" that you should worry. I own 3 DCs and 2 of them make the exact same noise. The 3rd doesnt do much beyond take up 2 boxs as its in peices. Thats ok though as it didnt work before I took it apart.

woah isnt that dangerous considering there is an air vent on it that it needs to stop over heating?

The fan is on the side and the vents are on the bottom of the system, if its not sitting on a soft surface it would be alright.

But it also wouldn't make it any quieter without covering those holes up.

I don't know why everyone says the Dreamcast is so loud. My Xbox is about noisy ALL THE DAMN TIME while the Dreamcast isn't so bad most of the time. I can hear the Xbox when it is on from the other room though.

I claim that my DC is louder than my Xbox, which is a v1.0 console with the graphics chip fan :P

To cite someone from IRC:

"DC is so funny. <memory card>BLEEEEEEEP!<fan>WHOOOOOOSH!<DRIVE>ZRRRT!ZRRRRT!"

I don't know. I honestly don't hear the fan from the Dreamcast, but I do hear the GD-Rom drive. My Xbox though makes this whining noise that I would guess is probably from the hard drive and it is much noiser than my Dreamcasts on average.

You kinda expect it to suddenly go "STOP THE HUMANOID, STOP THE INTRUDER" next don't you really. *chuckles*
