Well, the title says it all, so name your favourites (console games only if possible)! Hack'n'slay RPGs are the games I'm playing the most at the moment and I'm curious what games you like.

My favourite is the first Champions Of Norrath game. I really like the levels and it's also cool that you can make a custom character. Baldur's Gate - Dark Alliance 1 and Diablo on the PS1 are also great. Dark Alliance 2 is also good, but the elementar levels suck a lot so it lost its fun a bit for me. I haven't played the second Champions Of Norrath game but I hope it will be as good as the first part. And there is also A Bard's Tale to try out.

Would the Hunter games count? The ones based on the whitewolf RPG. I've got a couple xbox ones and they are pretty cool. Other than the fact that they are trigger-intensive (shoot and jump are on L and R), so it hurts to play it too long.

And of course...Gauntlet. Any variety of it.

I'll go for some classic ones, starting with the horribly underrated...

Popful Mail (Sega CD) You have to play this one - look for my other 30 or so posts about it, also in the "best Sega CD RPG thread"

Cadash (TurboGrafx-16) It's basically a lot like Zelda II with more RPG elements and better graphics. Again, another underrated classic that had Genesis and Arcade versions as well but this is my favorite.

The Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer game looks good. I've checked out some screen shots, it reminds me a bit of Fallout - Brotherhood Of Steel. Also a great game like Baldur's Gate but in sci-fi style.

My love goes to Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. I love Diablo, but for some reason, the first Diablo doesn't run very smoothly at all on our iBook (methinks it might just be a question of RAM, as I didn't try it since Steve added RAM to it - unless it simply doesn't run very well in Classic).

Diablo 2 was pretty good.. it was fairly mindless but had just enough depth to keep me interested.

Oldschool wise.. I LOVE goldenaxe.. it was the 1st that I really got into.

I had no idea that Hunter: the Reckoning was based on a White Wolf liscence...

Speaking of White Wolf, I love Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (PC) and Diablo I / II is fun in moderation.

PSO for the Gamecube and probably Fable.

Fable fits more into that hack n' slash fits into that category IMO. Its a fun game with a cool story and music.

Yeah, the Hunter RPG is based around the idea of people becming suddenly aware of the hidden undead / whatever living among the populace. They have to try and hunt them, while keeping in mind that to everyone else they just killed some guy, ect. Pretty damn cool game actually, just LOTS of unkowns...unless of course they've updated it since i last played which is quite possible. Hunter and Changeling are probably the only whitewolf games I could seriously play personally. Vampire and Werewolf just don't interest me too much.

Oh, and PSO counts? I love PSO as well. I've played like 8 different versions across several platforms and varying levels of legality.

Beyond Oasis and Alundra 1. Man I played the heck out of these. Can anyone reccomend any very similar to this that I would like? I never finished either one of these, I should go back and check them out soon. I remember the puzzles getting ridiculously tedious in Alundra very quickly though, eh I will have to give them a boot up again

My favourite is the first Champions Of Norrath game.

Yup. The second, while good in it's own way, doesn't quite measure up to the first.

It was my first venture into the genre. :embarrassed:

My wife LOVES dungeon hack games, especially the PS2 Baldur's Gate series, and the Champion of Norrath games.

My faves include:

Landstalker
Cadash
Magic Sword
Gauntlet (in all it's incarnations)
Arcus Odyssey
Gate of Doom & Wizard of Fire
Capcom's D&D games (Tower of Doom/Shadows Over Mystaria)
Shining In The Darkness (hey, it's a dungeon crawler too)
Shining The Holy Ark (ditto)

and probably a few more I know I'm forgetting.... LOL

Even though i was real short i would put Fable up there in my top 5.

1. Fable
2. Baldurs gate

don't know if you would count these but i would:

Castlevania SOTN
Legend of Zelda

Big Papa Husker

I would have to say Diablo II. I played that at least once a day since the day of release to sometime in 2003, when I FINALLY got tired of it.

Does the Dungeon Keeper series count? Those games were great..

if not, Neverwinter Nights was my fav, but I'm currently playing Untold Legends which is pretty fun..

Diablo 2 was ok, but I was really disappointed with it. It seemed more like an expansion to Diablo than an all out sequel. *shrug*

Does Actraiser qualify? I can't tell you how many times I went through that damn game... it's probably on my top ten list of games. I'd say that the action scenes fit the bill for the hack-and-slay bit, and the "Observe The People" bits, as I call them for a lack of better name, are certainly adequate for the RPG part. If Actraiser doesn't qualify with the definition, then I'm saying Brave Fencer Musashi for my honorable mention.

I'm Gonna go with Phantasy Star Online.......soooooo many hours pumped into that game. I loved it and occasionally play offline with my old character.

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel was unique for the fact that you got to us some big ass guns. A good recommendation if you like the console Baldurs Gate series.

Record of Lodoss War for the Sega Dreamcast would have to be my favorite. It helps if you are a fan of the anime, but it isn't absolutely neccesary. I especially like the sword customization part of the game, good stuff :)

How about another classic hack-and-slash, going back to before the term existed: Tutankham. It's one of these great games that helped pass many hours of my youth via the Atari 2600.

For the younger crowd who don't know this game, here's a screenshot of the arcade version:

I'm gonna go with Gauntlet Legends for either the N64 or Dreamcast. (found a near-mint complete for my DC last week). It's cheesie and fun with a multiplayer mode that I don't mind playing.

I love to hear that guy say "Red Warrior has gained a level!" He says it with SUCH conviction.

I wanna fire it up on my DC right now!! LOL

Diablo I and II (the pc versions)
Baldurs Gate I and II
Record of Lodoss War
Untold Legends: Brother Hood of the Blade
Nox (fun but short game for the pc)
Darkstone
Gauntlet (any of them, I like them all)
The Bards Tale
Golden Axe
D&D Heroes
Champions of Norath I and II
Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel
Fable

A couple of older ones, maybe not Hack N’ Slash but I like them anyway..

Adventure

You mean Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance I and II, right? They're not the same as Baldur's Gate I and II, which were released on PC (the Dark Alliance games are console games).

Exile (Genesis) Amid the bum raps the game gets for being too short and easy.

Beyond/Legend of Oasis (Genesis, Saturn)

Brandish (SNES, PC Engine Duo)

geelw

exile is a great little game- you really need to play the turbo cd version just to get the stuff cut out of the genesis version (the cinemas and some plot), plus the music is fantastic on cd. oddly enough, i liked the main title on the genesis version better- it was a bit more sinister sounding...

i liked beyond oasis more than legend, and i actually got stuck in brandish a few years ago and haven't gone back to it. once i have more time, i'll drop back in and play some more.

i'll add a "controversial" title to my long list above:

virtual hydlide

this one sticks out because if you overlook the chunky visuals and choppy frame rate, it's a pretty good game with plenty of the trappings of a classic hack & slash (hell, just like most of the hydlide series, lol). that, and the last area is pretty neat for an alternate world design...

For those who have played both, how does Dark Alliance II compare the first one? My girlfriend and I played through the first one on the Cube and while we enjoyed it, it was rather flawed in places -

- It was only in the last section of the game that the monsters started to drop decent items and at that point you couldn't go back to the shop to sell them so you'd find yourself carrying all this decent equipment while the whole game you've been struggling with the average stuff. Just felt unbalanced.
- When it came to the final boss, even though my gf had been levelling up alongside me and equal armour etc, one hit from the boss killed her instantly meaning that the only way were going to finish it is with me killing the boss myself.

That said, we enjoyed most of the game (though the levels could've done with more variety monster-wise - we got sick of the huge amount of lizards) and I'm considering getting the sequel, although as the sequel wasn't released for the Cube, I'd have to get it on PS2. Bah.

Still one of my favorite TG16 games.

Ever try, Exile Wicked Phenomenon puts the frist one to shame due to it's difficulty @_@

well, black isle did a decent job with the game (as snowblind went off to do champions of norrath for sony online entertainment), so there's more to do in the sequel. you can attach gemstones to weapons & armour to create powerful variants (you'll need loads of gold), and the quest is definitely longer. i think the visuals are a slight step down, as black isle was copying the look, but aesthetically, there's a slightly lesser 'feel" to things. still, the game is addictive, and you'll both find plenty of monsters to slay.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance or Hunter: The Reckoning

Hunter - Reckoning game gets that much attention, I just have to give it a try I think. If I remember right I saw a used copy for cheap. If I get some money I'll buy it. I'm also interested in the Vampire Apocalypse game, but I haven't seen it in any store. Is it allready out in Europe?

Besides that I saw a lot of familiar names in your lists. It especially was a pleasure that somebody mentioned Magic Sword for the S-Nes! I love this game and played it for hours, if I remember right I was even able to finish it. I could never understand why it didn't get better ratings in the game mags. It's a bit repetitive but it's a awesome game for sure!

heh- the most striking thing about magic sword other than the fast-paced action was the US box art. the young lass on the game cover is the spitting image (no punintended) of traci lords, but that's all i'll say about that

Baldur's Gate - Dark Alliance for the GameCube.

This game was just too much fun. Got it for $8 at BestBuy when they were selling them out last year (bought it on a whim). I got my moneys worth! :D

Great graphics, an interesting plot (even though its pretty linear), cool characters - both NPC and PC, and the controls were just perfect. I played this thing to death, playing all the characters. Finished it all in about a week, inbetween work and such. I've been wanting to play it again two-player, but my friends are not that interested in video game (the bums).

I've even been thinking of playing it all over again...

If thats the Dark Angel: VA game by Metro 3D, I suggest playing it at your own risk...heard it sucks big time.

I've had a lot of fun with Diablo II and PSO in particular. These games were so addicting, it was just so hard to stop playing them, but that's what's so fun about hack n' slash games; they're mindless and addicting.
