Is this worth getting, outside of the bad sound emulation?

Hell yeah. Unless you've got all the games already, of course. I thought it was worth the price just for Virtua Cop 2.

Ditto. If you've got light guns, or even just know where you can get some light guns, don't hesitate for a moment to buy this.

I agree, having it just for Virtua Cop 2 is more then enough just to dust off your House of the Dead 2 guns LOL

I got it as a free pack-in with my system. I was pretty impressed by it, but I can't say I've played it too much. Personally, I couldn't tell the difference on the sound, but I was never really into the Genesis.

As did I. The games are great and play very well. My only complaint is how poorly Sega emulated the Genny's sound processor.

I'll add another "word up" to this chorus. The Genesis emulation is ok. More of a novelty than anything else, but including VC2 sealed the deal for me.

Yeah, it's worth it. Some emulation can be glitchy, but it rarely gets in the way of gameplay.
There are two versions of it too, if you are into that kind of collecting.

Ok, I'm sold, time to find it. 8-)

Pack in and retail. The differece is a "not to be sold" marking, IIRC.

It's good, I've seen no glitches in graphics/sound myself. Only downside is that you can't save some of the games.

To my knowledge, there is no difference other than the disc printing and the back cover printing.

the genny sound emulation is HORRIBLE. you may think "it cant be that bad" or "it wont get in the way of gameplay", but play it. were talking 2600 sound quality here

The sound emulation on the "Smash Pack" was so bad that i opted never to buy it.
I tried playing "Streets of Rage 2" but the sound, especially the character FX, were so off and terrible...ugh. Blaze slashing a knife sounded like some shitty 8-bit generic "boo-beep" effect. O_O
But it for the other games but avoid the Genesis games on there.

Ditto, yadda, yadda. Virtua Cop 2 is a nice PC port, and while the audio is horrid, it's worthwhile just to own yet another copy of Shining Force.

I got it as a packin with my Dreamcast as well. The audio is off a bit but it isn't THAT bad. I swear, it's like when people look at games such as the SegaAges2500 remake of OutRun on Sega Classics Collection and go "it looks like a PS1 game!" ..uh... have you really forgotten what PS1 games look like? Same here "it sounds like a freaking 8 bit game!" ..uh, it's not that bad. (although I love the NES and I'm not trying to knock 8 bit gaming) :)
Besides, there were certian parts of the core of the Smash Pack that the emu community was glad to obtain.

Dled it this morning to try it out before i buy it.
I like it! Feels funny trying to play Sonic or even Virtua Cop 2 with the joystick, so I usually stick to the d-pad with them. Sound is like something from an Atari. Wish there was a way to exit a game and return to the menu without having to restart the DC.

Youre in luck , Hold l and r and hold all 4 buttons and start and it should bring up the exit menu.
You might have to hit it twice. 8-)

I agree. And I don't even use a light gun to play it and I still enjoy playing that game. My only thing is that they rehashed some of the same stuff they had on the 6-Pak cartridge for the Genesis. Would have been nice for them to throw in an oddball game or two in there.

Ah thanks! I had a feeling it was something like that anyway!
What, Sega Swirl isn't oddball?

I mean like an oddball Genesis/Saturn game...not the game that was on EVERY ODM disc and Web Browser disc lol

WOW, I didn't know that, so the DC guns work for the Sega Smash pack??

Really, the only good game on it is VC2... the sound is simply abysmal on many of the games, most notably Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi and Golden Axe. I wondered why they just didn't re-use the Sega CD remixes instead.

It didn't get in the way of the gameplay for me. ;) I got a heck of a lot of play out of my Smash Pack. I played through Sonic, Phantasy Star 2, and Shining Force on it, and I toyed around with the other games as well. I can't recall if I had a Genesis back then or not, but I know I didn't own any of the Smash Pack games at the time, so I thought it was great. I haven't touched it in a long time, though, since I now own the carts of most of the games I'd want to play.

Well, you did play the "Smash Pack" without knowing how the orginal game sounded versus how it is on the Smash Pack.
I played "Streets of Rage 2" and "Revenge of Shinobi" not long before becoming interested in the Smash Pack so the way the sounds are supposed to sound was very fresh in my mind.
And hearing the sound FX butchered like that made me disgusted.
I'd rather play the orginals.

Music in this is pretty horrid. How exactly do I save in Shining Force on this, and anyone suggest playing SF on this compilation rather then a true emu disc?

I heard that they never defragged the data on the disc prior to making the discs, and that causes the disc to kill the DC's GD-ROM drive.

Yeah, I'm not just going to accuse people of being wrong but I'd need to see a concrete source for that.
