View Full Version : Kid Appropriate Genesis Titles

For the past month or so I've been working at an elementary school as an aftercare counselour, anyway last Friday I brought in my Genesis to keep some of the kids entertained since I noticed the love playing Sonic 3 on the classroom computers. Being the new girl it's usually next to impossible to get an assistant counselour to help me even though I have double the the number of students I'm suppose to take care of (33 as opposed to 18). But last Friday I had 3 assistants and 1 full fledge counselour sitting around the genny. :P
I brought in "The Lion King", "Sonic 2", "Sonic Spinball" and "Columns". Sonic 2 was a huge hit, as was "The Lion King". I also own "Aladdin" although I couldn't find it in time, I literally thought of bringing in the system 15 minutes before leaving for work that day.
Anyway I'd like to pick up some more cheap kid friendly games for them to play on future Fridays and I could use a few suggestions. The school's pretty strict about showing no worse then G-rated films, so games really can't be any worse then that. "Scary" themed games are also probably a bad idea else I'd take "Zombies ate my Neighbors" or "De-Cap-Attack" (although the later would probably be ok if I had my boss approve it).

Lets see.... how about Quackshot? That's simple and pretty fun. Ecco the dolphin games... NBA Jam might be fun for some of them, too. Doing a half court dunk with the ball on fire appealed to me when I was younger.
Pac-mania... Rampart... TMNT: Hyperstone heist if its okay...
Also, don't forget the other sonic games.

It's not that they're young, I have the 4th graders, but it's a wealthier school and some of the parents are somewhat uptight so we have to appeal to the lowest common denominator. So I'm pretty certain my boss would take one look at the cover on Zombies and turn it down regardless how scary the actual content may be.
The kids weren't even allowed to watch "Dark Crystal" which is rated PG.

I'm not sure about the Ecco suggestions. That game can have an eery atmosphere at times, might give some of the kids nightmares :P Definately find a copy of Rocket Knight Adventures and Dynamite Headdy.

RISTAR! Excellent games for genesis. Here is what I came up with on the top of my head.
Castle of Illusion
World of Illusion
Aladdin
Beauty & the Beast
Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Sonic 3D Blast
Ristar
Ecco
Ecco Tides of time
Lion King
Toy Story
Quackshot: Donald Duck
Fantasia
Any of the SEGA (Kids) CLUB titles
I am sure there are a ton more kids games, and I am not sure if some of these do not meet scary criteria, as I have not played through all of these completely. Most of the disney titles I'd assume should be fine.

Boogerman. Yes, it's all snot, farts, and spitting. But if the kid is a bit older, kids love the gross humor stuff.
Garbage Pail Kids
Captain Underpants
Mattel's Slime in a Can
Queasy Bake Oven
Etc.

With all this mention of Ecco...how about the Ecco game made specifically for kids - Ecco Jr.
There's also EA's "Rolo To The Rescue", another kid-specific title.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
Ms. Pac-Man (you never go wrong with Pac-Man games)
Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures (Point and Click game is pretty fun, but I'm not too sure if it's too advance for the kids or what not, since you control Pac-Man all the time) Yet there is a hidden bonus of Pac-Man and Jr. Pac-Man games hidden inside via these password codes "PCMN0RG" and "PCJRDPW"
Arcade Classics (Pong, Centipede, and Missle Command)
Columns is fun and harmless (yet insanely addictive)
Arcade's Greatest Hits (Midway classics, yet Sinistar may scare them)
Animaniacs
Ahhh! Real Monsters
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure
Taz-Mania always rocks
Taz: Escape From Mars (Marvin the freakin Martian man!)
Toe Jam and Earl Panic on Funk-A-Tron, just cuz it's funky like dat 8-)
Ecco Jr. from the "Sega Club" series

Marvel Land! It has a nice, kid-friendly look and was one of my favorite platformers on the system. I'd still love to see Namco make a sequel!

For very young kids, or kids with no vg skills, Barney's Hide n' Seek is good if you can stomach the purple dino. The next step up is Crystal's Pony Tales...slightly more challenging, but still very easy (and not nearly as annoying!). And I second Columns...it starts very slow, and kids love the colors and sounds.
33 kids!...good luck!

How about the Japanese version of Last Battle? I'm pretty sure kids would like that. Ha, ha.
Can you tell I don't have kids?

Both Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster are cheap, K-12 friendly titles. Maybe you should give them a whirl next time. Rocket Knight Adventures: Kid tested, gamer approved.

Hm. You'd be better off with a game that isn't as delicate when Locked-On, and one that doesn't support saves, or they'll end up arguing over save slots. Me and my siblings can testify to that =)
I'd recommend the Rocket Knight Adventures series, but they can be a little hard for younger games to get to grips with. Outrun, Columns or Ristar should also keep them interested.
