Hey all,
I think Super Dodgeball should be on this list.
Take care!
Sega Hitman
01-03-2003, 02:20 PM
Jaybird has a good list of sports games, but he's missing Super Spike Volleyball and World Cup Soccer. Two very underrated games, both are excellent IMO. They even released both games on one cartridge as a pack-in, although I haven't seen one of those in quite a while.

Super Dodgeball for sure, also Tengen Tetris.
I'll second Trog and add Bubble Bobble. Also, is Ice Climber 2 player? I'm pretty sure it was in the arcades...
Nature Boy

Mario Kart got a *lot* of two player action back when I worked at the hobby shop. So did Zombies Ate My Neighbours.
These days it's the co-operative mode of Halo and, of course, the mini-games in Super Monkey Ball .

Jaybird has a good list of sports games, but he's missing Super Spike Volleyball and World Cup Soccer.

I had a tough time deciding between Venice Beach Volleyball & Super Spike Volleyball, but I went with Venice because I like the gameplay a little better (not to mention its cover art) :P
I've yet to play World Cup or Super Dodgeball. I'm going to have to check them both out since they're getting several recommendations.

Contra + Super C are definitely up there, as is Blades of Steel. I thought the original Ice Hockey wasn't too bad, either, but you couldn't throw off the gloves and fight :) The Turtles games were r0><0r, too.
I don't know about the Mario games for 2-player...they were great, but IMO 2-player works best when you have both people on the screen at once.

everybody's choices in this category are indeed worthy, but i'd definitely say that CONTRA is THE best nes 2-player game. and really- was the game even fun WITHOUT two players?

River City Ransom Wins Hands Down!
:D
KUNG-FU HEROES would make my top 20 (although I prefer the arcade version, CHINESE HEROES). MULE is another excellent game I didn't see on this list. I second the vote for MICRO MACHINES. And how has this thread gone this long without JOUST getting a vote?

I know this is an old post and you're smarter now, but c'mon: None of these are NES games.
Chalk up another vote for Ice Hockey. It deserves a spot on the list.

Tecmo Bowl is great for its historic value, but Tecmo Super Bowl to this day remains the greatest sports game ever made. The running game of Bo Jackson versus the Montana-Rice passing game is the most dynamic head-to-head match-up imaginable in a video game. Rumor has it that God himself had dreams of Bo zig-zaggin' along a TV screen, and forced the programmers to put it in the game. Tecmo Bowl is a nice piece, but it has to be replaced by Super Bowl.
Other notables: Spy vs. Spy is a fairly average 1-player game, but it's a lot of fun going head-to-head against another person. Same can be said for North & South. Super C is another, but the original Contra is already up there. And how about Smash TV? Sure, the NES couldn't handle a perfect port of the arcade game (one of the top 2-player arcade games ever), but it's close enough to retain most of the gameplay.

Glad to see Bubble Bobble got some recognition.
But Double Dragon's two-player mode was just a one-on-one battle. The co-op fighting came in its sequels.
And, as far as baseball games goes, I'd have to say Base Wars was the best of them. (Mainly because it was the one I had the best chance of beating some of my friends at.)

I would have to say that Contra is very fun without another player; I actually can't stand to play with someone else, though I've been playing that game ever since I can remember (first game I ever beat) and can pull a deathless run through it so that may be why I feel weird playing it with another person. If you can find someone who knows the game, then I'm sure it's a lot better; but sadly none of my friends have ever really played Contra or Super C and think I'm doing an insane gaming act by going through without dying...I try to tell them that it's nothing more than memory.
Anyway, I would have to put Contra and Super C on the top of my list as well as Double Dragon II.

Double Dragon II as well. And I like that you get the choice to ignore friendly damage or be able to beat the living crap out of your brother. Plus turning it on allows you to cheat and get 7 lives.

Its a shame that no one mentioned Trolls on treasure island - that game is just so much fun its rediculous...
River city Ransom is definitly on the top of the list along with Super Dodge Ball
Battle toads is a lot of fun but its almost unplayable with 2 people because you cant get past level 3 - unless you cheat
I had a lot of fun with the 3 stooges back in the day - Mini games rule!
I really liked the 2 player ability in little ninja bros.
Mario Bros is awesome 2 player
Archon is just great but I play it all the time and its hard to find good competition!
Danny Sulivan's Indy Heat is hands down my favorite Racing game on the NES 1 player is good - 2 player is great - 4 player is unbelieveable!
Qix gets a nod but its nothing special because its the NES version
The rest are already on the list and covered!
