SIGN UP WILL BE CUT OFF AT MIDNIGHT (PST) THURSDAY!!! The competition will begin on Friday Night!!!

Hey DPers!

It's been 4 long months since I last hosted a contest. My last contest called on your vast gaming intellect, but this one is going to be all about your skill with a joystick!

The tournament will use multiple arcade games, so proficiency with one or two games will be of no help. It will be league style play, with a regular season followed by playoffs.

Prizes? There is a wealth of meseta to be had here, but I know that some of you have no interest in such things. There is also a cache of DP schwag from the DP SHOP to be had here. Clocks, hats, magents, stickers... I may even try to convince Joe to let me create custom trophies for the winners to have in their item inventories.

I promise that this will be a lot of fun, so PLEASE sign up. The sooner I get enough people on board, the sooner we can get started.

I will provide MAME ROMs for all of the games. I will set up a web site from which they will all be downloadable.

I will list all of the people who have signed up here in this post. Please POST IN THIS THREAD if you want to sign up. PLEEEAASSE don't PM me to sign up.

ALL OF THE DETAILS WILL BE EXPLAINED FULLY ONCE THE SIGNUP PROCESS IS OVER.

Thanks!

Chris

EDIT: PRELIMINARY PRIZE PACKAGES More may be added to the prize packages later, but what you see here is now set in stone. Sign up now to get a chance at these AWESOME pirize packages!!!

im in , but i hope you will pick games that practically everyone has :D

Some games will be extremely popular. Others may be games that are obscure enough that few have ever played them. I would imagine that I will have to offer ROMs for any of the games that are in the competition. It may end up being a MAME only contest. I havent ironed out the details yet. I'm just trying to wrangle up enough players!

Yes, unfortunately I have to rely on people's honor here. I am going to require screenshots, but all that does is make sure someone doesnt just make up a score out of the blue. I basically have to trust that the good people of this community show the proper respect for their fellow competitors as well as the work that I am putting into this. As it stands now, I am paying for the prizes out of my own pocket, and cheating in order to win them is tantamount to stealing from me as far as I am concerned.

That's the only thing that bothers me, I really think this should have been limited to members who have been here for X amount of time.

I believe most DP members are pretty honest here, so lets hope the honest people are are playing here. :)

Well.. if it's Mame, maybe we can all decide on a standard version to use, then we can all record .INP files! That'll ensure the whole game gets recorded and could be read back by others to verify (if it ever gets to that). We can then just zip up our .INP's, & post them here. :)

Anyway, if someone does real good it's always fun to watch them play. And in this type of online environment that's probably the best way to do it with this particular emulator.

If someone has a high score I personally love watching their gameplay and seeing their techniques. :D

Dunno if you want it to be mandatory or not though.. it's really up to you. I'd imagine it would require some kind of tutorial for those who have no idea about it etc. And the hassles of getting everyone's Mame in synch. Stuff like that.

The_EniGma

Is this going to be like the mame club that we select which game we'd like to play? Or is it just randomly picked by you

Well it's either we do something like that, or some people who signed up are not going to be able to play. I don't like having to do something like that, but I am not going to spend time and money on this just to have people cheat.

I want to hear people's opinions on this. Either I have to get with a couple of the other DP regulars and make some decisions concerning the people who signed up, or you all record your gameplay (which I think would be a major hassle since I am assuming that people are going to play many games trying to get the best score possible.) I swear, this thing could use it's own forum... Maybe I'll start a Yahoo! group or something for it.

No, the games will be pre-determined by me, and not everyone will play the same game. Players who are pitted against eachother will play the same game, but not all pairs or players will be playing the same game at the same time.

Man, I'd hate to put you thru watching all the inp files. If it comes down to that, i'd be willing to drop out of competition and basically act as a 'judge', i.e. sit and watch these damn vids of game play for any suspected cheating.
You'd be better off with just booting out the damn kids that you suspect would cheat.
Those of us that actually have money n stuff don't need to cheat. At least those of us who are real men....most of my "real men don't" statements make me look like a crackpot, but I'm pretty sure we can all agree on this one.

Honestly, it isnt just cheating that worries me. This thing is not going to work properly if people flake out. I need players who not only will not cheat, but will play through the whole thing. If I get a bunch of flakes who don't submit scores and end up dropping out, then the system won't work.

Should those of us with low post counts start defending ourselves then? I haven't hit 200 yet, but I've been mostly lurking around these boards for two solid years. And if you need proof of my tenacity when it comes to high score contests, you only need to look this far:

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58439

Not to mention I'd be more than willing to record all gameplay to authenticate it. I'm definitely one of those people who would enjoy seeing gameplay movies from others as well. I love showing off and I love watching others show off too :D

In any event, I know you didn't ask for a defense, but I gave you one anyways. So, there ya go. I ain't no cheat. ;)

Gapporin's name has been removed from the list because he has been gracious enough to assist me in the administration of the 17th annual Digital Press MAME League. As the DPML vice chair, he is no longer eligible to play.

I am mentioning this for two reasons. First so that people don;t get the wrong idea and think that he was removed for some other reason, and second to give him credit for helping me out. Hopefully I can make it worth his while.

Thanks, Jared.

Jibbajaba's (JibJab?) correct. I still am doing the Scoreboard every Friday, although it occasionally gets de-stickified and placed back into the deluge of regular posts (which, I can't blame them for doing so, because some games are obviously more popular than others).

I can't wait for the third installment of your next challenge on Friday. Just make sure it's a game that everybody has access to.

OK I now have 28 players, which is enough to start the league. I am going to cut off sign up at midnight PST tommorow night. The League will start Friday evening.

so, this doesn't include any online (head-to-head??) play, right?

if it's just offline play with high-score submission then count me in

does it matter which MAME version we use? haven't updated my MAME for a while

and please do me a favor, do not include any games bigger than 10MB for the zip, some are only on 56k/ISDN and we can't download some of the bigger games if required!

Correct.

Not really, but if we choose a game that is only available in the later versions, of course you'll have to update.

Damn, I didn't consider having to update MAME to play one of the games. I always have trouble when I try updating that sucker. Oh well, I'll give it a shot. I'm really looking forward to it! \^_^/

Count me in!

Regarding .INP files: it's the first time I hear of this too... I'm not even sure whether it's implemented or not on MacMAME (and I'm using the latest beta version).

.INP files are not going to be used unless Gapporin or I suspect a player of dishonesty. Screenshots will be mandatory.

Here is my attitude about cheating etc. If someone has a problem with one of the other players on the list, PM me and tell me who it is. There is no one who is currently on the list that I think has a high probability of playing in a dishonest manner. The bottom line is that the only way to make absolutely sure that no one is cheating is through the use of INP files, but that is going to make playing the games a lot less pleasurable and make this contest more of a hassle for everyone.

If anyone signed up for the league still has concerns about the possibility of cheating, you can PM me or post it here and we can discuss it.

I should also say that there will be a zero tolerance policy concerning cheating. If you are caught cheating, or if Gapporin and I have a strong suspicion and any reason to believe that you are cheating, you are out of the league.

I was wondering the same thing... the mame screen seems to take up my whole screen, and I couldn't get the screenshot program up.

I'm sure there's a simple way... you could probably just describe it whenever you post the full details of the contest.
