Mushihime-sama to come to the JPN PS2 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/04/26/news_6123049.html). It's a 2D shooter, and we all know how Sony feels about that. :)
Developed by Cave (Donpachi, DoDonpachi, ESPGaluda) and came out late last year in arcades. It will make any shooter fan want to pull their pants down.
http://www.cave.co.jp/amvisual/arclist.html (2nd from the top. The top is Ibara, which is in-dev at the moment). Play-Asia, in a nipple-slip of sorts, put it on their pre-order list about a week or so ago. Famitsu today confirmed it.

Ibara's not out yet? I thought it was on location test months ago.
Y'know, I think it's publisher apathy more than anything that keeps games like ESPgaluda and Mushihime-sama from coming to America. No one's really interesting in localizing them. Old-fashioned shooters need some Disgaea-grade breakthrough title to get Western gamers interested.
Mobile Bug Light Princess, people. It'll sell for sure.

With anime as big as it is, Mushihime-sama would sell on the cover alone. It wouldn't sell huge, but localization would take about an hour, keeping development costs close to zero.

Well, I've got two guys right here who'd buy it just on account of being a shooter, so...profit time! They'd be fools to pass this one up.

Wow. That is, I believe, a shit-ton of bullets. Realistically, what are the chances of U.S. release?

We need more old school shooting goodness!!!!
Geez, SoA could market the niche shooters strictly online or something to reduce risks involved in distributing to stores. I know alot of people who would buy a tasty PS2 shooter but not import one. There's gotta be a market, even if it's a small one. Even small markets can get properly exploited....

It's my U.S. PS2 that discriminates against JP releases, not me, man. And it's my empty wallet that's holding me back from the land of foreign/modded consoles.
But your point is valid for those who have the means. Guess I'll have to content myself with me Battle Garegga and Dodonpachi for the time being.
Who is this time being, anyway?

Sure, you can import it, but you need a modded/import console to boot, and a jp PS2 runs a cool $200. It'd sure be nice to be able to buy jp games for my PS2 w/o the $200 surcharge....

It's very unfortunate that the Shmup scene is so niche in the US. Makes for a very expensive hobby, unless you are content with MAME.
The relatively poor sales numbers for Gradius V & R-Type Final aren't helping much, nor is the reluctance of SCEA to approve 2D games as of late. Only the big guys get to give us the good stuff. The fact that Working Designs is not really around to bring us these games is also very sad. ThunderForce V, RayStorm & RayCrisis were very nice packages. Is it true that WD wanted to bring over Psyvariar Complete, but was shot down by SCEA? :/
Being that Cave are the absolute masters of the modern Shmup, this makes that import PS2 all the more inviting. Too bad I lack the funds for an investment of that stature. DDP:DOJ & ESPGaluda were saliva-inducing enough, but another one for PS2!?! What we need is a compilation for the US of all 3 Cave PS2 releases.
Unfortunately, that will never happen. :( (nor would it have the essential Tate mode)

For anyone that's interested, Play Asia is taking pre-orders now. For anyone that's into shmups, but doesn't have a modded PS2, you're really missing out. DoDonpachi Daioujou, ESPGaldua, and the Psyikoyo Collection Packs are reason enough alone to get one. Can't you get a US PS2 modded fro $100 or so?
On the niche comment. Shooters are niche in Japan... just a much bigger one. Big enough that a lot of shooters get ported. Don't forget, ESPRade, Ketsui, Guwange, nor Dangun Feveron got home ports. All are emulated fairly well in mame except Ketsui.

Games can take a long time to go from a location test to a full release, even though the games are often complete when they are put out for testing.
I saw the Mushihime-sama location test at TRY! Akihabara (didn't get to play it though - line was too long) about 3-4 months before it was actually launched. Ibara was on test almost 3 months ago IIRC - so it'll probably get a release in a month or two. 8-)
Will Mushihime-sama get released in the US? Unlikely, but we can always hope someone will pick it up as a budget title. Neither of the prior PS2 Cave games got one though, so I'd say the odds are pretty poor. ^^;
