The Lord of the Rings star joins cast of film adaptation of Konami game; Radha Mitchell and Deborah Kara Unger also on board.

On Monday, principal photography began on Silent Hill, the film adaptation of the popular horror action game franchise from Konami. Directed by Christopher Gans, who helmed the cult-favorite French horror movie Brotherhood of the Wolf, the film is being shot in Toronto, and it stars Australian actress Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black, High Art).

While Mitchell's involvement was already known, today Variety revealed the rest of the Silent Hill cast. Most notable among the additions is Sean Bean (Ronin, Fellowship of the Ring). Bean will play the husband of Rose (Mitchell), a woman who begins a distraught search after her daughter mysteriously disappears.

Also joining the Silent Hill cast is Deborah Kara Unger, most famous for her revealing role in Crash, and fellow Canadian character actor Kim Coates (Black Hawk Down). The film's script was written by Roger Avary, who shared a Best Original Screenplay Oscar with Quentin Tarantino for Pulp Fiction. It is currently slated for a 2006 release.

With the cast and crew mentioned above it doesn't sound like this will be another House of the Dead or Alone in the Dark.

Here's to hoping for a good psychological horror flick, the kind Uwe Boll can only wish he could make.

Wow, this just piqued my interest a whole lot more with Gans being named the director. The guy has an amazing visual flair. Other than the aforementioned Brotherhood of the Wolf, check out Gans' adaptation of Crying Freeman, a great action movie.

I now live in Silent Hill. The small Ontario city that I live in has been transformed. It isn't being shot in Toronto, but rather 1 hour outside of Toronto. My house is 5 blocks away from where they are filming the movie.

It's absolutely incredible the way that they took 2 blocks of our downtown area and transformed it into something straight out of Silent Hill for the PSX. They purposefully destroyed sections of some of the storefronts and rebuilt others. We now have 50's era marquees and signage that you'd swear was there before.....but wasn't. The new Silent Hill Savings And Loan now stands on a corner. We have a "new" abandoned movie theatre that wasn't there last week, complete with "Now Playing" signage.

All of the stores have a light spray of grey/brown paint applied to the inside surfaces so that they would have that opaque ghosttown look. The rusty bars on the blood-smeared windows and doors are straight out of the game. They spread a layer of foamy grey "ash" all over the streets and threw trashed pre-60's cars all over the area. It has rained all week, which is what the film crew was hoping for.

This is going to be really interesting to see once the movie comes out. One minute it was just our little nowheresville town. Then it was announced that a horror movie was to be filmed downtown. The next thing we know, Silent Hill signage is being put up on the storefronts and a set crew comes in and creates a very thrashed Silent Hill. To say that they move fast is the understatement of the year.

Awesome. Have you seen any demons yet :) I have a feeling that this movie will be pretty good. Also, if this one does well, we may get a film adaptation of SH 2 (great storyline to use in a movie).

Happy dance

with a good screen writer and hopefully a decent script and good actors at least it wont turn out to be another alone in the dark or house of the dead :rockets:

It's being filmed in Brantford right? I want to go down and check out the set. Is it all closed off? Can ya take any pics? I'd LOVE to get a few for myself just to say I went down and took em when they filmed it. Brantford is only 20 min from my place ;)

Are you kidding? House of the Dead was a well-made, and it had a great story. I bought the DVD quite a while ago, and I also plan on getting Alone in the Dark when it comes out.

Yes, MaxLords...I live in Brantford. These guys move fast and they were tieing up a main street with the trashed cars and trucks so the filming was done for the "outside-in-the-street" scenes in a really short space of time. They're doing interior shooting and I guess that they're off to a rural area next to do some other scenes....somewhere around P-aris.

I hope that they leave the sets up!! It improves our downtown!!:D :D
