I´m talking about the combination of things that makes a system great: good controllers, game format, durability, innovative games, and most important, highest ratio of good games/bad games.
In the end, this is almost a "which are your favorite systems" topic, but thinking about the system as a whole, not only its games.

OK, I can go with that...(not in any specific order)
Famicom. Controllers got better in the A/V FC models (and in the NES) since you could actually replace them. Huge selection of games; you can play a new game every day of the week for years...heck, you could play a new ninja sidescroller every week for a year (likely longer). The NES isn't bad either, as you get to play such American classics as Death Race (which really owns that lousy Route-16 Turbo, now don't it?), Codemasters releases, Tengen Tetris and the like.
PlayStation. Lots of good classic ideas served up in three funkified dimensions; one of the greatest controller designs of ever (though I don't really like the d-pad - after the SNES most have been garbage), especially when they ramped up its capabilities with the dual shock.
SNES - another huge system with tons of games that look amazing. The more I look for games on this system, the more amazed I am with it. Great console design, and an even better controller - the original shoulder buttons. Too early for analog thumbsticks, unfortunately...
Genesis/Mega Drive - Sadly many of its ports seem sabotaged, but modern gamers can appreciate the awesome arcade ports without much worry for the price...uh, unless you're collecting for the Japanese MD...The Mega CD is a great system to collect for, given that you can rip audio tracks (for MP3 playing or the like) and emulate the games with Gens if you don't feel like hooking up a Sega or Mega CD.
N64 - a slim number of top quality titles make it a must-own. Great controller too. Although the single joystick configuration is limiting, it *did* at least launch with one.
TG-16/PC-Engine - whenever you heard "video game sounds" on TV in the 1990s, they probably sounded like TurboGrafx sounds, didn't they? Anyhow, the CD-ROM system was - in Japan - the great equalizer for this system, allowing it to produce music as sweet as on any other console. Oh, and the games weren't half pad either. Props for the roman numerals on the controller pad.
XBox. Lots of great games for this system.
Saturn - overall this one didn't have enough of the games that the game buying public demanded, but it did what it set out to perfectly. Lots of good 2D games, and a fair number of extraordinary 3D ones (Panzer Dragoon series). Importing, again, as the U.S. long box cases...argh, they are hateful and horrible.
Game Boy - great games on the go, and the unique format means they have that...unique...feel to them. Lots of great stuff here.
Neo Geo - Everybody else is just a weenie
