I loved the first 2, but I haven't played 3 or 4 yet. I haven't really been in the RPG mood since Final Fantasy X killed it for me...and the ones I've played since then have been action RPGs (minus a few). How do the two newer ones compare to the first two?

Definite fan-in-training here. Played the first one when it first came out, loved it. Replayed it again recently and loved it still. Just got the second one for fairly cheap at a nearby Gamestop and can't wait to dig into it.
I loved the fact that you could get all of those characters to join your castle ... that was the coolest thing ever, trying to find all of them, mixing and matching teams to see who would be the best/most effective.
Can't wait to go through 2, 3, and 4, despite the mixed reviews I've heard on 3 and 4.

I think that most Suikoden fans, who have been with the series from the very first one, that the original 2D ones are better than the new ones. I did like 3, though. I didn't mind any of the new changes that they added in such as the change to the battle system and the change to 3D as well as others. The story was also pretty good....until the end. This, for me, is where the game gets me. I didn't like the story toward the end at all. I thought it was boring. Also, I heard that the Suikoden producer of 1 and 2 left about half way through the production of the 3rd one. If this is true then it could be a big part of why the last 1/4 of the game just weren't as good as the first 3/4 were. Also, I still haven't played Suikoden 4 yet, so I can't comment on it. But, the Suikoden series has been my favorite series ever since I played the original back in 1997 or 1998, can't remember the exact year.

*Shakes fist at you* I owned Suikoen 2 but then it mysteriously vanished. The only place that I found a decent price for it was on ebay and that was about $96. So, I shake my fist at you for finding it at a good price :P

I really enjoyed 1 through 3. Haven't played 4 yet and probably won't for a while. Once I get through the backlog I'll tackle it. I do have to admit that my favorite thing about Suikoden is the ridiculous prices that Suikoden 2 gets on Ebay. I always find them. I think I've found 6 in the wild over the last two years. The most I payed for one was $30 at Gamestop, but it's usually around $8 at pawn shops. Suikoden 2 has paid for my Xbox and my entire Xbox collection. :D So to anyone who has purchased one on Ebay, Thankyou!

I've played 1, 2, and 4. The first two games were definitely my favorites, but 4 was still amusing. Can't wait to see this Suikoden Tactics game that I've been hearing about on Gaming Age!

i'm a huge fan of the first 2 that came out, been wondering how 3 and 4 were, but just had not had the time to invest on these games.
and might be a while before i can get into them, since i just got RE2 for the Nintendo 64. and i'm a bigger fan of resident evil games. :P

:Checks name:
adjective, animal. hmm. I think you're onto something! :D
Uh, anyways, Suikoden rocks! The first two are easily the best entries, and 3 is great as well, if you can get over its incredibly slow pace. Telling the story from 3 different viewpoints was an excellent idea, and really needs to be implemented in other games, IMO. The fourth game, while still good, was something of a dissapointment to me...I can't quite pinpoint it, but it was just...missing something.

Suikoden Tactics? What's this? I haven't heard a thing about it. It would be quite interesting to see how it would turn out if Konami did make one like that. Do you have a link that I could see some more info on it?

I'm telling you man, the best place to look is either Gamestop or pawn shops, like FlufflePuff said. I don't have many pawns around me, but I just kept checking back at a Gamestop a mile from my house and, sure enough, one day there they were, Suikoden and Suikoden II. I too got it for $30. Keep looking and you'll find it.
I'm intrigued by Suikoden Tactics as well ... what is this?

I own Suikoden 1, 3, and 4, but so far I've only actually bothered playing thru 3. Seem alright to me but I'll admit it was a tad blah.

Haha, so true, what a stinker that one was.

$30? Wow, that's awesome. I actually already bought the $96 one  It was well worth it, though. So, I can't complain too much. :D

If you liked 1 then you will most likely love 2 as well. It is basically the same thing as 1 only much longer with more things to do. Your castle, for example has a ton of things to do this time around. I don't want to say much, but I will say this: Cooking Contest :-P One of the coolest mini games I have ever played in a video game.

I'm a fan of the PS1 games. I have one of those Suikogaiden games too which I happened to find by fluke at a flea market. Hopefully that will get some sort of translated version some day.

Well, my title is a Foxhound-style adjective animal name, so I guess I count. :)
Like one and absolutely love two. Three, well...And I haven't given four a try yet. I miss the lovely 2D style the series used to have. Made it so much more unique. And that wonderful old battle system.

The Funkenstein is indeed a very rare animal. A very rare and sexy animal.
Suikoden 2 is, in my opinion, one of the best RPG's ever made. I spent an entire Christmas break just playing 2. I beat it, made a boo boo and got the bad ending, then started it right up again and beat it to get the good one. Then a while later I beat it again to get the save file to load into 3. Being able to play a 30+ hour game through 3 times gives it a big stamp of approval. (I still own the same copy, and will never ever ever ever sell it. It's like my baby.)
I agree with The Dane in that I prefer 1 and 2. 2 is my favorite, then 1, then 4, then 3. 4 wasn't a bad game persay, it just felt like a slightly watered-down copy of the first two. The characters seemed very two-dimensional and I didn't get the same emotional charge from beating it. They played alike but it just didn't seem to have the same heart put into it. They took a lot of risks and changed many gameplay dynamics in 3, that I've found a lot of fans either hate or love. I didn't dislike the game, the storyline was right on par with the same epic bravado and stellar character development, I just found the trinity hero system to be a little repetative and very tiring. I'd reccomend all four as enjoyable games.

The first two were great. 3 was really lame IMO (this opinion is from when I had a PS2 btw).
The first two are really far up there in the all time RPG list IMO.
Haven't touched 4, but after 3 I pretty much wrote the series off. Kind of like what happened when I played MGS2.
(Raiden=essence of WTF is this dork).
Suikoden 3 contributed greatly to my view of the PS2 as "home of the inferior latter day sequels (*cough* MGS 2*cough* 3D Castlevanias *cough*)".
Fugly characters, fugly gameplay.
Konami ain't what they used to be.
I tend to be really harsh when a games formula is changed in certain ways, much moreso than if it was left pretty much intact for a decade. Most seem to be more concerned about stagnation than (what I perceive as) butchering though.
I am especially defensive about character designs. The designs in the first two were nothing spectacular but I just find the designs in 3 and 4 extremely goofy looking (in a very unattractive way).
It seems that character designs in JP RPGs have been going in a direction that I am rather unfond of (to put it mildly) for some time.
The character designs in most Squaresoft games from FF9 onward were awfully nasty IMO.
The designs in DQ8 look like a bad rip-off of Akira Toriyama designs in the sense that the designs in DBGT (damn I hate Toei, money-grubbing bastards...) are bad rip-offs (worst. show. ever. Not that DBZ was all that great, but still.).
The change in character designs between Xenosaga 1 + 2....
I haven't the words. What kind of idiot destroys designs in that manner?
And don't get me started on KHearts character designs (spew).

I am a big fan! I got all four US games when they came out.
I and II are my favorites, but IV despite some flaws is good too. III was epic, but lacked a bit of the "heart" of the other games...

I guess I should eep in this thread to show that I am also a huge fan of the Suikoden series....but to a more unhealthy nature.
Bragging rights follow.
I own all four U.S. games. (Played and beat 1-3, working on 4.) The official US strategy guides for Suikoden 2 and 4. I also own the limited edition Japanese version of Suikoden 3 that came with a mini soundtrack, plush keychain figure, metal bookmark, two mouse pads, and in a lovely little book type case. I also own imports of the Genso Suikogaiden games, which are text based adventures starring Nash. They take place during times before and after the second game. I also collect the trading cards. I have a starter set from the first set, then booster series 1-4. I also have about 12 Japanese artbooks/guides from the games. Collecting the manga based off the third game. (Volumes 1-5 are out here thanks to Tokyopop) Various soundtracks...poster from 2....and finally my Futch plush doll I had made. He so cute.
