what do you think of 2d games made in more modern age? i find castlevanias for the gba to be a exception but 2d has really missing something that the older games had a few years back , anyone feel that way to?(good example is mega man zero)

I agree 100% Ever since SOTN. CastleVania just has this mind set that it "has" to be an RPG/Action game always.
Which is fun regardless, but I'm just burnt out on the idea. 4 clones....and 2 more on the way....
I wish I had something like any from the 16-bit era (PCE, MD, Sharp X68K or SNES). A nice traditional 2D CastleVania.
Yet back to the subject, I'd love to see a solid platformer or brawler.
After hearing so much about Gaurdian Heroes Advance for GBA. It's just heart breaking..
If Streets of Rage was on the scene...I think it would be nice.

I like the new SOTN castlevania games. Sure Castlevania 3 perfected the 2D genre, but the newer GBA games are still pleasant. There's a lot more to do and these new games just look nicer. I especially appreciate the not falling to your death aspect as well. I recently picked up the Mega Man collection for Xbox. Man, I forgot how hard some of those games were. I finished them, but damn, I get aches just thinking about that freakin dragon that chases you as you jump from block to block. ARRRGH! These newer games are definately easier to play.

Speaking of Streets of Rage, did you read about Rockstar's The Warriors project? Long overdue. There's not enough brawlers dammit. I picked up TMNT2 for xbox. What a joke. I thought it would be cool as a throwback with four player brawler action. No way. That game blows. But you know, it did come with the old skool 2D TMNT Arcade game. I can't believe I used to like that game. It was pretty bad. Just a machine to eat quarters, or if you're a little bastard, a machine to eat other people's quarters. Remember the punks who would play and run away from the bosses at the end of the levels?! ARRGH! Anyway, you can read about the Warriors game in Game Informer.

I think all 2D Games, Classic and modern are great (in general lines obviously), but classics are better, from Golden Axe to Super Mario Bros., from Bad dudes to Street Fighter...
Well, speaking of Street Fighter, i think all the 3D versions of this game really...SUCKS!!!, c´mon!, there are very bad...i hate them...
Sorry if i´m very...how can i say..."retro"...but that´s my opinion...

Ok, Soulcaliber, I admit. I f like. It is simple. Everyone can play, hack and slash and knock out of play. Tekken. It's cool. Dead or Alive... overrated. Sorry, but anime girls have no effect on me, no matter how huge their head lights are.
But I agree, 3D street fighter sucks. Alpha 3 was perfect, everything after that, BLAH!

Yeah, most definitely. I was playing the original Zelda game a couple months ago, and it's addictive now as it was then! 2D'ers are not "as good" today (IMHO) because quite a few of us have fond memories of the the classics and playing them feels like a time trip, where today's 2D'ers don't.

I like Einhander a lot, too. I guess it's a 2-D horizontally scrolling shooting game with polygon graphics. While it could have been better with the addition of albino squirrels, it was still really really good.
Did you try R-Type Delta? It had a similar vibe, but R-Type style. Which means it kicks my ass a lot harder than Einhander does.
As for you guys getting up on your 2-D soapboxes and grumping about how things just aren't what they used to be, why don't you chuck those canes and dentures and try the Klonoa games? Namco knows how to pull off a 2-D game, even if they fool you into thinking you're in a 3-D world with their polygon trickery.

You know what makes me mad? the original reviews for this game in EGM and PSM were so below average.
That was a DAMN good game! Those people smokin some crack! They can kiss my ass and call it sunshine for all I care.
That is a game that deserved a sequel!

Have you seen PS2's "Urban Regin"? Another brawler in the works.
You gotta find "Spike Out" for Xbox, but good luck since Sega screwed up on the amount made :(

Both Viewtiful Joes are completely badass. I'd love to see more games taking that direction, obviously with different twists and whatnot.
For the most part though the classics far outwiegh the newer stuff. But nostalgia burns into that, and there are a lot more classics obviously, than new stuff so it's not really a fair comparison. SNK and the others had a long time to perfect and improve on what they were doing.

It looked neat. Never actually seen it in the real world. Sega, what's wrong with you?

Do you consider the Saturn to be a classic 2-D console or a modern 2-D console?
If you think it's modern, then it does 2-D gaming RIGHT.

nice saturn pics, some of those games look really interesting. for me, my favorite 2d games are 16 bit (classic i guess) and 32 bit (modern..maybe). the dc was the last system to actually take 2d seriously, and now its nothing. to me, handhelds have always been 2d until 5 months ago, so i don't really look to them for good 2d, as they are all 2d to me

Elevator Action Returns is on my "Summer Fly Fishing" list (as bait, I'm using dollars...more than a few). Actually not too expensive, unless you're going for the Taito F3 system cart (which I might, as well) :)
It's interesting to see games/gameplay modifications like Crimson Land and Alien Swarm do a flat perspective game in 3D, for a psuedo-2D feel. The idea has a lot of promise and flexibility, but it'll still be a little while before we see a game of this type that approaches hand-drawn detail - of course, Contra: The Hard Corps really doesn't look more natural than the PS2 Contras :p
There's a lot of potential in 2D artwork still, but for a variety of reasons most people shy away from doing it on top-of-the-line platforms.

Personal I like modern 2D, there always were good and bad 2D games and that will never change. Only at the moment there are not much games too choose from, so the change you buy a bad game is bigger. It's the developer which makes a game great or bad, not the generation.
