Has your gaming preferences changed over the years, from when you started playing games, until now?

My evolution came with the evolution of the consoles. On the NES I mainly played shmups and jump'n'runs/platformers, then on the S-Nes I discovered RPGs and that continued until now. I also like some puzzlers like Columns or Bust-A-Move, but I don't own a puzzle game on any of the newer systems. I discovered Diablo on the PS1 but only since Baldur's Gate I'm really addicted to this type of games and now it's my favourite category. I still like to play shmups and other stuff, but RPGs are what interest me most.

I'm not that much in platformers and more, Ratched & Clank (if that counts) is a platformer that got me but besides that I play mainly RPGs.

The first console I had was a NES. There was alot of platform games for NES so I enjoyed titles like Super Mario Bros, Megaman, Turtles etc etc..

Later on we got a PC and I started to play Sierra and Lucas Arts adevture games. These games are still my all time favorite games today. Classic titles like Indiana Jones, Sam & Max, Day of the tentacle, Leisure Suit Larry and Police Quest.
I also loved Doom and Duke3d, in other words, FPS.

FPS is basicly what I play today on PC. There arent many good games today and the last game I acctualy played for PC is Counter Strike Source. Reason is because I have a 3 year old PC and I need a new one hehe :)

I'm sorry if there is allready a thread like that. If it's the case then please close this one.

But it seems that you didn't get what I really wanted to know (or maybe I should say I did ask in the wrong way ;) ). I wanted to know how your gaming preferences changed regarding at the game categories and not when did you get which console. You know, like which categories did you like when you started gaming and if you still like them, how you like the new styles and all that.

When I first started gaming (N64) all that I played was racers with a few Banjo Kazooie-styled games added in. One day someone showed me FF7 and for the next few years I was off on an RPG tangent. I then went to all genres and realized that you can waste a lot of money by doing that. Owning an Xbox, you're kind of forced to look at FPS, so I've been playing a few of those. I bought my first hockey game, ESPN NHL 2K5.

I've come to realize that I'm most comfortable with racers and big epic RPGs ala Jade Empire. I'll play these to completion, thereby wasting less cash. My Xbox library is VERY racer heavy, so you could say that I've come full circle in my tastes.

When I started out on the Amiga, I was playing mostly adventures games (Lucasarts). Nowadays, I find them to be too boring with the linear gameplay. On the PC, I was addicted to realtime strategy games after the release of C&C. I'm mostly into shmups now, or anything that's mostly action and not that much thinking ;)

I was strictly a PC gamer until about three years ago when I decided to get an Xbox for Morrowind rather than upgrade my PC. Now I never play PC games even though I still kind of prefer their genres. The experience of lounging on the couch with a wireless controller and my dogs curled up next to me is just far too cozy to give up. Plus PC games tend to absorb more time than I can afford to spend these days. Still, my fondest gaming moments are all PC centered.

Hmm

When I was 18, slaying a dragon meant you had a few people sitting around a table rolling oddly shaped dice and making tick marks on a piece of paper while drawing crude maps.

Adventure for the 2600 was the first visual RPG I got hooked on and no matter how primative the graphics were they still managed to give an impression.

Then Treasure Of Tarmin actually put you inside a 3d dungeon. Weeks of wandering around searching for new items. How deep could you go. What was around the next corner or down the next level.

Gauntlet then satisfied the urge to crawl through a dungeon with a few friends and a pocket full of quarters.

Ultima brought it back home with all the best D and D elements together with many side quests to keep you busy for a week.

Phantasy Star took all the stuff from Ultima and brought it in full color on your TV.

Zelda III brought the fun back into RPG's and showed a glimmer of what more advanced hardware could do.

Virtual Hydlide moved the RPG into full 3D but that is it's only merit.

Tomb Raider almost stole RPG fans away into more of an action format. Massive 3d spaces. Inventories, Upgrades. No dragons though. Just a dinosaur.

From there things get bigger, badder, flashier, more detailed with the only significant addition/advancement I see being squad based multi character play.

Still waiting for the next evolution.
