Welcome players to the 17th Annual Digital Press MAME World Championships!

We've come a long way since that foggy day in 1988 when we held the very first MAME World Championship tournament in Phosphor Dot Fossil's horse stable.

Unfortunately we had to stop awarding international vacations to the top three winners after the incident with Sothy going to Yugoslavia and founding the Kosovo Liberation Army back in 1999, but we have some great prizes lined up for this year's competition.

I would like to mention that all of this year's official prizes are available for purchase in the DP Shop.

The first place winner, on top of gaining the title of "MAME World Champion" for the next year, will win the following FABULOUS prizes:

http://www.cooncaderomp.cjb.net/NewTrophy1st.gif
This awsome GOLDEN trophy will be added to your DP item inventory!!! (All trophies created by RockyRacoon)

-10,000 Meseta 1000 meseta is coming from Joe, and I will give out the other 9000.
-Namco Plug-and-Play Video Game Unit You know, those things you plug into the TV. Comes full of arcade games.
-Game On: The Retrogamer's Trivia Game (http://www.digitpress.com/products/gameontrivia.htm)
-Digital Press refrigerator magnet (http://www.cafepress.com/digitalpress.20233495) DP management not responsible if you stick the magnet to anything else!
-Digital Press sticker (http://www.cafepress.com/digitalpress.8592810)

The second place winner will become the proud owner of this slightly less prestigious prize package:

http://www.cooncaderomp.cjb.net/NewTrophy2nd.gif
This SILVER trophy might not command the same level of respect as the GOLDEN trophy above, but it's still not too shabby. This will be added to the second place winner's DP item inventory.

-5000 Meseta
-Digital Press Cap of Penultimate Wisdom (http://www.cafepress.com/digitalpress.8585882) PLEASE NOTE: The Cap of penultimate wisdom may not make you look as cool as the guy on the product page. Also remember, you are wearing the penultimate cap because you are the penultimate loser.
-Digital Press Magnet
-Digital Press Sticker

The third place winner will get the following token gifts as our condolences for once again coming up well short in life:

http://www.cooncaderomp.cjb.net/NewTrophy3rd.gif
This BRONZE trophy will be inserted into your DP item inventory whether you like it or not, as a constant reminder both to yourself and those around you of your failure to achieve. Think of it as your scarlet DP.

-2000 Meseta Don't spend it all in one place, sucker!
-Digital Press "Hard Drive Enhancement" Magnet
-Digital Press Sticker It is suggested that you place this sticker directly over your face to hide your shame.

Random bonus items (AKA "Stuff I don't want but can't sell because no one wants it") may or may not be included in the prize packages.

MY THANKS These people are official Digital Press MAME League sponsors!

I would like to thanks the following people:

Joe "Digital Press" Santulli: Without whom this contest, these forums, and this website would not exist. Joe gave his thumbs-up to this contest early on, and financially aided me in purchasing the prizes. You sir have my most sincere thanks.

Tim "Sniderman" Snider: Tim was going to donate his clock making time and talents (and a clock) to create the first prize clock/trophy for the competition, but his hard drive crashed and he lost all of his clock templates. But he WOULD have made a cool clock, and it's the thought that counts.

Jared "Gapporin" Bottorff: Jared was kind enough to withdraw from the competition to help me administer it. Hopefully his Friday Scoreboard feature will gain some new members as a result.

Drexel923: He has graciously donated a pretty fat pile of gaming goodness to be used as prize fodder. Thanks, man!

Danny "RockyRacoon" McMann: Danny created those awesome trophies for the winners' item inventories! Thanks, dude.

A huge thanks to everyone who is participating in the league. I created it to be a fun, community-bonding event, and that would obviously not be possible without you.

Last but not least, The Notorious B.I.G.'s mom asked me to give one last "big up" to Brooklyn, and I would like to personally thank my O-line for keeping me protected in the pocket.

THE BASIC RULES

-All games must be played with a MAME emulator.
-If you have reason to believe that a fellow competitor has cheated, please PM either myself or Gapporin. Please do not accuse someone of cheating without good reason.
-If you are caught or strongly suspected to be doing so by Gapporin and myself, you will be immediately dismissed from the league.
-Please use ONE COIN ONLY! If you earn additional credits through the course of gameplay then you may use them to continue your game, but you may not insert additional coins. This constitutes CHEATING.
-Emulation must take place at normal speed. Slowing down or speeding up the game is also considered cheating.
-Save states must NEVER be used. This is also considered cheating.
-You must use the ROM supplied to you by me. Links to all ROMs will be posted in this thread. If for some reason your version of MAME does not like the ROM, you should make every effort to resolve the situation yourself. If you can not make it work, contact Gapporin or myself.
-You are free to use any controller or keyboard that you like.
-If you do not submit a score by the posted deadline, you forfeit the round, but may continue the competition. If you fail to submit a score during the single-elimination playoffs, then you will be eliminated from the competition.
-Please do not post in this thread. If you have a question, please PM Gapporin or myself. This thread should be used solely for the purpose of posting match ups and results. I would encourage someone to start a separate non-stickied thread for general discussion and trash-talking. Trash talking is highly recommended, as intimidation is your best weapon!
-ONE ENTRY PER PLAYER! If you submit mulitple high scores, I will ignore all after the first. Make it count!!!
-Infinity, infinity +1 and infinity times infinity are all unacceptable high scores. Kamino submitted all three of these during the 2002 tournament and won that year as a result. We will not be fooled again!

Even with all of these rules in place, we really have little way of being sure that they are being followed. As such, we are relying on the HONOR system. If you choose to play in a dishonest manner, you not only ruin the game for yourself, but for everyone else involved. You are also showing Gapporin, Joe, and myself along with all of the hard work that we have put into this a complete lack of respect. If you feel the need to cheat, please do the right thing and drop out of the competition.

YOUR FIRST CHALLENGE

We are going to have one "preseason" game to determine the placement of the competitors in the league. You have until midnight EDT Sunday night to submit a high score plus screenshot for the game Galaga. Scores are to be submitted to the following e-mail address:

cpalaimo at gmail dot com

Please use an e-mail account that you check regularly as I will e-mail all future game assignments to you, as well as posting them here.

Along with the high score and screenshot, each player has the opportunity to help us decide which games to include in future rounds. I am asking that all players please choose one game they would like to see in the tournament.

Your e-mail message should therefore include your DP handle, your high score, one game choice, and a screenshot.

In this preseason round of play, if you do not submit a score by the deadline, we will assume that you no longer want to participate in the league, and you will be taken off of the players list.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING YOUR PRESEASON SCORE IS SUNDAY NIGHT!

Tournament FAQ:

Here I will post questions that players PM us with and the answers to those questions.

Q: Can we play as many games as we want until we are happy with our score?

A: YES! Play as many games as you can before the deadline so that you obtain the highest score possible.

---------------------

Q: What should the dip switch settings be for game X?

A: You should always leave the dip switch settings at their default positions. Just to be on the safe side though, Gapporin will be posting what those setting should be.

----------------------

Mayhem posted a FAQ from a League that he participates in. It might be helpful for some people to read. Please note that the manner in which that league is set up (1 game per week for 10 weeks) is not how we are doing things here. This is going to be the blitzkrieg of MAME leagues, so pin your diapers on, Lebowski.

-----------------------

Q: Man, Jibbajabajaibjbaijbaiajba, I can't get this f***in' ROM to work!!!

A: If you can;t figure out how to make it work, PM either myself or Gapporin. We will do our best to pre-test the ROMs beforehand.

----------------------

Q: DAMN, those prizes look HOT!!! Is that all that there is?

A: I will periodically update the prize lists when I acquire new and cool items that are apporpriate for this tournament. The winner of this tourney will end up with quite the enviable prize package.

-----------------------

Q: OK, I have obtained the score to shame all others. Now how do I submit it?

A: Send it to "cpalaimo at gmail dot com". Include your DP nickname, the score, and a MAME screenshot showing the score. That's it!

-------------------------

Q: What is the acceptable format for the screetshot? MAME saves them as .png files. Is that OK?

A: Yes. All you need to do is take the screenshot using MAME and e-mail it to me. .png files are just the way I want them.

Chris

EDIT: Please do not respond in this thread. All discussion about this contest should take place here: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=59821

Here are the current tournament standings. These will be updated after each round of games played.

All game assignments and deadlines will be posted here AND e-mailed to you, so there's no chance that you will miss out on anything!

If your name appears in red, it means that you are in danger of being removed from the league due to failure to submit scores. If you do not submit scores for the following week's games, you will be out of the league.

Let's get the action started! Your first game will be "Knights of the Round"!! I'm sure that many of you have played this game before, but for those who have not, it is Streets of Rage meets Golden Axe!

You will have until Sunday night to obtain the highest score possible!

To make things interesting, the player who submits the highest score for this game will recieve "Streets of Rage 2" for the Sega Genesis out of my trade box! (Sorry, cart only.) Please submit your mailing address along with your score this week.

WEEK 3

My pick for this week is the excellent game "Solomon's Key". This was more popular in this country as a NEWS port, but it started out it's life in Japan as an arcade cab.

You can read my full review of this game here:

http://alaimolabs.com/Jibbajaba/solomon.htm

You can download the ROM here:

http://alaimolabs.com/solomon.zip

Leave the DIP switches at their default setting. I'll post the official settings when I get a chance.

If you want to issue a challenge, please do so in the MAME discussion thread.

Well, my pick for this week was going to be Quiz And Dragons. But then, I realized that Quiz And Dragons carries over your score from one continue to the next! D'oh! You all should still play it, though, it's an interesting game.

However, my offical pick for this week in Pnickies:

http://www.users.uswest.net/~userid946/pnickj.zip (Thanks...again, NE146!)

An interesting puzzler from Compile, the creators of Puyo Puyo. And, granted, it does share similarites with Puyo Puyo, but I think that you'll find that it's a refreshing change of pace from most puzzlers.

DIP switches are:

Coinage: 1 Coin/1 Credit
Coin Slots: 1
Difficulty: 4

WEEK 4

In honor of Revenge of the Sith coming out this week, I decided we should be playing a Star Wars game. I don't really think that the vector-based Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back play all that well on MAME, so I chose Return of the Jedi instead.

When you start the game, it will ask if you want to play on easy, medium, or hard. Choose EASY.

Here's the ROM:

http://alaimolabs.com/Jibbajaba/jedi.zip

The only DIP switch that the game has is for "Service Mode". Leave it off.

I will send out an e-mail when Gapporin posts his pick.

I totally, totally forgot it was Monday today. Totally forgot. In fact, I've been so off the ball this week, I think I even forgot to post a Friday Scoreboard last Friday. Oops.

In any case, my pick for this week is Dokaben.

http://alaimolabs.com/Jibbajaba/dokaben.zip

Dokaben: It's baseball! It's a card game! It's both!

DIP Switches are...well, this game doesn't have any DIP Switches. Easy enough.

Scoring rule: Go ahead and play an entire game. Then tally your score at the end of the game.

Week 5

First of all, sorry about not posting the game yesterday. I was unable to get onto the boards last night so I decided to just wait until today.

We are back on a normal schedule now, so the scores for this week's games will be due on Sunday night.

Since some people have been asking for a shmup, and since it is memorial day week, we are going to play 1943: The Battle for Midway.

Download the ROM here:

http://alaimolabs.com/Jibbajaba/1943.zip

I have to check the DIP switches still, but as usual just don't play with them and you should be fine.

Hopefully this choice makes some players happy. There seems to be a waning interest in the league by some of the players, and I don't know if it is because of poor game choices, if it's that the novelty is wearing off, or if it is that the players are not doing well and so are just quitting. I notice that in general the players that have left or been removed from the league are generally not doing very well.

I have asked before and I'll ask again. If you no longer want to participate in the league, TELL ME. Just ignoring the league and not submitting scores is extremely inconsiderate, and anyone that I have removed from the league because of this will not be allowed to participate in any league or contest that I put on in the future.

At the rate people are leaving the league, we may end up having early playoffs if we lose too many more.

Game selections will be e-mailed once Gapporin posts his pick.

WEEK 6

In honor of me drinking a lot of beer this weekend, my pick for this week will be.....

TAPPER!!!!! (Budweiser version)

I think this game is really fun, although quite simple.

My pick for this week is everybody's favorite disco videogame, Disco No. 1!

http://www.hypothetical.net/sillydog/w9x_software/%23MAME%20Games/disco.zip

Here's a quick how-to play for those not in the know: You skate around the different ladies on the dance floor to earn points. The bigger the box around them, the more points you get. Also, if you happen to get a policeman in the box as well, that's even bigger points! Running into the ladies will stun them momentarily. You can also use a disco song to make the policeman stop for awhile.

Pick up drinks along the way for power-ups. Also watch out for the witch (???), who will rub out the lines that you've made on the floor. Sounds simple, right?

DIP Switches are:

Coin A: 1 Coin/1 Credit
Coin B: 1 Coin/1 Credit
Cabinet: Upright
Lives: 3
Bonus Life: 10,000
Music Weapons: 5

WEEK 7

My pick for this week will be Qix. I love this game.

http://alaimolabs.com/Jibbajaba/qix.zip

The game boots up into some sort of admin menu system. This is where the DIP switches are located. Don't mess with them. You will have to hit the F1 key 4 times to advance through all of the menus and start the game. I *THINK* you only have to do this the first time you load the game. It should then save all the stuff to a config file.

If I am missing anything, feel free to ask.

Week 9 - The Fake Week

Remember that this is the bye week, so these scores count for nothing as far as the standings are concerned. Mini-prizes will be given out for BOTH games, however, so you should still play but it isn't mandatory.

My pick for this week is GAUNTLET!!! There's something wrong with you if you don't like this one. I didn't pick it as one of the games for a regular week because it is way too easy to cheat in this one. Even though this week is for fun only, if you want to compete for the mini-prizes, please submit an .INP file.

Get the ROM here:

The game only has one DIP switch, SERVICE MODE. Leave it off.

Do you remember those labyrinth toys you had as a kid? And you had to move the marble into the hole at the end of the maze by moving the little knobs on the sides? Remember those? This game is kinda like that. Except it's not made of wood.

NOTE: The course that everyone will be playing on will be the Special Course. If you think that's too hard, then play at the easier courses until you get the hang of it. If you still think it's too hard, then tough toenails. :P

Hey stinkies. I don't have anything witty to say this week, so let's just get straight to the point.

This week's game is "Rally X". If you've been playing a lot of Ridge Racer on PSP then you know what I'm talking about. It's exactly like Food Fight, but with cars, and totally different.

Download it here:

My pick for this week is a game that even I hadn't heard of before. It's called Raimais. (And no, not like the Ghostbusters director, either.)

http://www.hypothetical.net/sillydog/w9x_software/%23MAME%20Games/raimais.zip

Think of it as a cross between "Head On" and "Tron", and you basically have the gist of this game. It's a really neat maze game, in my opinion.
