Board Game: Top Shop it was one of the late release A1 titles, does anyone know how it plays? Is it a normal board game type game or one of those weird Japanese board game RPGs like Sugoro Quest? Probably spelt that wrong. :P Anyway I couldn't tell from the back of the box. So I was just wondering if anyone here had actually tried it.

The DP Guide sez:
"A very interesting take on a "Monopoly" styled game. Set in a mall, you try to buy up shops and the more you control of a type, the more expensive items the other players have to buy when they land on it. A total Party style game when you have some serious time to kill, but the AI is competitive if you choose play alone."
I had a friend who played it before, and he said that he really liked it. I've still got to find it, m'self.
By the way, A1 Games = obscure gaming goodness (for me, at least). I don't think I've ever been disappointed with any A1 game I've ever played. Maybe I should start a mini- collection of all the A1 Games...

It's one of the only few budget games I actually like for the PS1. Like stated above, its a variation of monopoly so it helps to be a fan obviously.

Actually that sounds kina cool. I already have monopoly for Genesis but a variation would be nice.

Yeah I heard it's really good. A sleeper hit as it were. 1-6 players with a unique cast of characters (some non human) to pick from.
The game is known as TENANT WARS on SEGA Saturn (JP only). I recently purchased it but have yet to play it. Same game.

I've really enjoyed it. The first time I put it in I thought I'd be playing it for an hour maybe, I instead was addicted and played for about five hours. For ten bucks it really gave me ::gasp:: more than my money's worth. It's sort of a Monopoly type of game, with multiple levels to open stores on and manage.

very cool game, spent days playing it with my girlfriend shortly after its release. i remember it having a good pace but not being very difficult ( i dont recall if you could vary the challenge).

Have to agree, the games A1 released at the end of the PlayStation life cycle at $10 each were some of the most interesting titles the PS got in the US. I haven't played Top Shop (haven't come across a copy yet) but Puzzle Star Sweep was very enjoyable.

top shop is very fun when you are playing multi-player on the game, because you are trying to build shops that when the other player lands on your shop, they have to buy item, which differ depending on what type of shop you have, plus you are able to exspand your shops into huge shops that carry more exspensive stuff.plus,if someone buys the empty shop near you, they take away your chance at making more money,so you either have to buy out there inventory and be able to buy the shop once its empty.its a very different way of playing monopoly, plus its got cool anime type graphics.its a great game to play for at least 2 players, and even non-gamer types might get into it as well.cool game.also,i want to add that i really like most of those a1 budget games.bowling and boxing, while simple, are very fun games as well.

I love it. WELL worth $10, though you should be able to find it for even less now.
Monopoly is a bit of a generalization, as Top Shop involves a great deal more strategy. Expand? Don't? Buy your opponent out? Don't? Restock? Don't?
Additionally, there is also a variety of boards that keep things from getting monotonous. Games can also last from 10 minutes to 3+ hours depending on the board you select, and the skill level of your opponents.
Pookninja is right. The game is fun on single player, but really shines as a party game.

I know that wasa bit of a generalization and all but what else it's like was beyond me. At the same time you need to decide in monopoly weither or not to buy more hotels/houses or hold the money for safety ect ect. Mind you the stuff that i've given descriptions to (which is no where NEAR enough games in total for the PS library) have been done off the top of my head on my PDA for the most part in flights that ive taken over the course of the last 8 months. (Sitting in one place with nowhere else to go is usually the best way to do this kind of work)
/start side babble Eventually I'll get to a point where i'm just going to be replaying alot of the games that i've got (or in some cases getting to them for the first time) and getting descriptions worked out for the masses. I've also got a fair number more in my PDA, but its not liking syncing to my desktop alot so sometimes stuff updates and other times it doesn't. Working through the excel list that is the PlayStation list is a very LOOONG process. /end side babble
This game was a surprise when I picked it up because it was actually alot of fun. Something I wasnt expecting from a budget title like this. I echo the sentiments posted above me.

Just to concur with the above -- great party game, interesting board game style. Took part in a 5-player match once and there was much verbal abuse for about two hours straight. :P
A1 also published another really nice multiplayer party game around the same time -- Battle Hunter. It's like a multiplayer dungeon crawl, and very cool. Another game that leads to verbal abuse between friends... ;) Continuing with A1...Tall Infinity...Shooter Space Shot...hell, they localized a KOF game as a budget title. Now let's see some PS2 releases from them!

I haven't played it but from what I've read about it, it seems to be something I might like. I'll probably get it sooner or later.
