View Full Version : What was your biggest "dump?"

I figured that would be a great topic to pull people into this one! I'm sure you're all thinking: "Shouldn't this be in the Happy Hours Pub?"
Actually, I couldn't think of a better word for jettisoning off a good part of your collection. Twice now, I've collected over 100 NES carts and then ended up selling them when I lose interest, or whatnot.
It's been a while since that happened, and I've started to collect for more systems, and I'm generally more serious about it, but it still looms as a possibility. And I know it's happened to some of you.
Possible reasons:
1.) Money is needed
2.) Lost interest ("Heck, I can just emulate these!")
3.) Wife yells at you.
4.) Need trade-in fodder for the newest Currentgen release
5.) Long ago... Mom tossed all of your games.
I'm hoping it never happens again to me, but I see it going on in Buying/Selling all the time... "I'm getting rid of my Atari2600 collection...etc..."
Tell some stories of the biggest "dumps" you've made, and why... and whether or not you regret it.
edit: And no talk of BMs! :)
edit 2: Unless it somehow applies! (That'd be interesting.)

most i dumped was about 20 INTV games, along with the system. No reason other than not wanting it anymore. Regret it? no. I got 4 good nes games for the lot :D

I just dumped my entire SNES collection, which wasn't all that big (2 systems, 6 carts and a Super Gameboy). The reasons for doing so have already been stated; needed some extra money and space, also coupled with no real interest in the thing, SNES was not a system I had any particular sentimental or nostalgic attanchment to so I figured this was one I could jettison and continue to enjoy through emulation. I'm having similiar thoughts regarding my NES stuff as well, which woud be a larger dump of about 25 games plus a pile of blinking toasters.
Logically I should do the same thing with my Genesis and SMS collections as well (75+ games, including some R7's). All the same reasons apply, except I've become something of a Sega hardware fan whereas the Nintendo consoles were collected simply to collect them.

i also "dumped" my intellivision with about 20 games last year, reason for it, i just did not have the room to display it. and the only reason why i was keeping it was for the horse racing game. LOL
but if i ever wanted to get them back it would cost that much, since most of the games are very cheap.

I ditched my Game Gear with about 10 titles and my N64 with about 7 titles back in 1999, when you could still buy new games for them (maybe not Game Gear, but definitely N64). Like everybody's been saying, I needed more space, and wanted some free cash so I could work towards getting a Dreamcast. I've really never regretted it. I think I pretty much saw the best of the N64, and there really weren't many Game Gear games worth holding onto in the first place.
I also sold my Gamecube in 2003 when I started medical school. I had a PS2 with more games, and I didn't want all the distraction of Windwaker around, so I got rid of it. I have regretted it time and time again. When I get some more time and cash, I'll get another one.

I had a big Intellivision dump a couple of years ago, two systems and about 50 games. Never played them back in the day and only one or two games were more interesting than my other consoles. I dumped my Colecovision setup that was almost as big but I've since gotten a lot of that back. Oh, and I dumped a small Vic20 collection with two computers and a few carts. Just not playing the Vic when I had C64 and the Atari's I grew up with.
Everything else is now out on display or stored away and deemed too personally valuable to dump :)
Two months ago I dumped a fully loaded PS2 (HDD, modem, monster cable, upgraded drivers) that I'd owned for less than a year along with 60 games, many never played. I picked up my second Xbox and a pretty great starter library.
The reason? Being an AVID Gran Turismo fan for the first 3 installments, my disappointment and anger at the new Gran Turismo 4 was so great that I no longer wanted the system in my house since there was nothing else on the PS2 horizon that I was planning to buy. The new physics engine in GT4 is the worst yet IMO. Unbearable. And yes, I gave it a good try.....all licenses and 30% completion when I dumped.

Dumped a Saturn with Dragon Force, Panzer Dragoon Saga Shining Force 3 and Burning Rangers. I was unemployed. I've managed to recover PDS so far.

When the SNES came out, I wasn't really much of a collector. So when the girl at one of the local video stores told me she was branching out to open her own combination video store and pizza place, I saw it as a prime opportunity to unload my 8-bit NES and the remaining games. After all, she didn't care if they were used, she was just going to rent them out anyways. I had dumped the best of the lot on my dad's office, but unloaded the last thirty some-odd with the console to Your Pizza-Video Connection. I think she gave me something like $700 CDN for the lot.
As I look at my meagre ten-game library for the NES now, I definitely regret it. At the time, it was a necessity. Back then I had about 70-75 titles. And there were a lot of them I'd love to go back and play now. From the selection in my original collection, I've replaced three - Super Mario Bros. 3, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and Xevious. The other seven are "new" to me, so at least I'm getting some new enjoyment.
Oh, and that video store closed after about six months of operation. Guess people didn't want a movie delivered to their door; they would have preferred to have somebody come by to pick it up and return it. :)

I just dumped about 30 PS2 and Xbox games so I could pay for a PSP. I kept all the games I really wanted, there were a few harder to find games I got rid of but I figure its alot easier to find the rare current gen games tham the rare old school ones.

Maybe a year or two ago I sold a huge atari lot here on the boards to somebody. It was just stuff that I had been collecting from yard sales and such, I never had any intent to play it, just to trade or resell. I think the DP value of all of it was around $600. Took something like $200 for it. Don't regret it a bit 8-)

Getting rid of the jaguar and 13 games.
I'd tried each exactly once to make sure they worked.
I didn't use the system and had no particular attachment to it.
So got rid of it.
I make sure never to stretch my budget when buying games, so I've never been in a "need money" state where I am forced to sell something off. Usually I just sell stuff to get rid of stuff I don't want (so I don't feel bad about picking up more stuff) to make more room for the new.

Even though my license plate still reads "AT2600" and even though I've actually created some stuff for it, I "dumped" my entire Atari 2600 collection within the past year.
Now, I love the 2600. But it just wasn't getting any play from me anymore. And because of the sheer size of my collection, it was taking up a LOT of space. I just got tired of 1. dusting it off every so often and 2. feeling guilty that it was sitting unused and unloved.
So, I made a great deal here on DP and we were both happy about the trade/sale. And I really haven't missed it, to tell the truth. (Except for those times I want to beat my Halloween high score, and realize I no longer have the system. Those days, I die a little on the inside.) ;)

1) when the N64 was BIG news, it didn't cost 100
2) did Ebay already exist when the N64 was BIG news??

My biggest and really only dump (besides two old brick GB's I traded at EB for a GBC) was said GBC (atomic purple) and about 6 various GB/GBC titles. I had a GBA at the time so the GBC wasn't needed. Looking back, it hasn't bothered me. The GB games I got rid of were games I really grew to dislike. And as for the GBC, it is my most hated of the GB system lineup. I don't know why, I think its the shape. I hated the bulge on the back. Why couldn't it be more streamlined like the GBP?

Thankfully I've never had to do this. Yet. I await the day when something/one forces me however. I've already made some sort of plan about what goes first at least. Anyone care for rare 2600 games? :P
Still hopefully that's way in the future, and hopefully never...

Back when the NES was released I sold off my Atari 2600 with around 300 games and 12 or so controlers to a friend of the family so I could get the system and 1942. I did regret it for a few reasons. The first being that I wasnt able to get the game I wanted with the system due to not having the money, and the second because I believed they would take as much care for the system as I did. Which was not the case as within a year they were wanting to know why I sold it to them when it didnt work. Upon examination I had discovered the culpret which was that the system and a good number of the games had either been submersed into water enough for green corosion to show, or had been left in a highly humid location. I dont believe the PB&J sandwhich helped it work either. After having the system for more then 5 years, they did in 1 what I had never been able (or wanted) to do. Ruin a beloved colection. Now, years later I believe it would have been better for me to have saved my money and waited untill I had enough money to buy it. While I know I never would have done so (saving money when your 13 can be hell) I wish I could have saved it from its final demise. Who knows? I may very well still have it if not for this. Damned Nintendo and their superior graphics!

I don't know if it counts as dump but my biggest lost concerning videogames were some boxed NES games. If I remember right the games were: TMNT I and II, Bubble Bobble, Castlevania and Probotrector. I've lent them to a "friend" who never gave them back and who I don't see anymore. It still makes me angry...

Biggest dump... all 248 US Dreamcast games with various demos/mags.
Why? I needed the money. My collecting habit had outpaced my eBaying income. (I'm much more careful now to always maintain a close "break-even" point in buying/selling). So I sold them all. Got $1500 for the lot - they were all complete and mint.
Regret? No. I needed the money. However, as I am 25 games short of having a complete US Dreamcast collection again... I know that I will NOT be selling this collection unless the choice is between eating and gaming. And then only if I have been starving for a few days. :)

I dumped my nearly 500 unique Atari 2600 cartridges about a year ago. First, I got rid of the exceptional values first - then, I cut loose the remaining 400 or so in one big lot. I absolutely don't regret it. I only kept Journey Escape and Joe Grand's SCSIcide (he'd cry if I let it go). The rest of those things just ate up space.

The biggest dump I ever did was the day I traded in two PlayStation games. And now I want them back.
Around 1988 my brother "loaned" out about 30 Atari 2600 cartridges to a friend who moved away without returning them. Smooth move, bro.
Sniderman--don't you at least have a 7800 sitting around? Or are you too enamored with the Xbox and its warm chocolate puddin' capabilities now?

In my youth, before the serious collecting days, I always dumped my current system when the nextgen system came around. When I got my NES in 1987, my mom donated my Atari 2600 with 60+ games to the battered woman's shelter. I was pissed as hell then, but at least now I know they went to a good cause. My NES collection of ~80 games was sold at a garage sale when I got my SNES in 1993. I was happy about that because I got to buy Final Fantasy 2, Mega Man X, and Super Metroid with the money. Finally, when I was getting out of collecting I traded in my SNES with all complete, mint condition games to an EB games for like $200 worth of store credit, which I used on Star Wars CCG cards. Grr...that one pisses me off more than anything. Especially considering that my two main character cards in those packs was a Grand Moff Tarkin and a Devastator. *grr* I want my complete FF2 back! Never again will I dump my collection. If I decided to get out of the hobby I'm sure I'll probably sell some super rares for the cash and keep the other stuff for nostalgia or for my kids.

When I was younger I wanted a train set because all my friends had one. I had no cash so I sold the only thing of value that I had, my SEGA Master System and about 40 games. To this day I have no idea what the hell I was thinking - that's the only thing that qualifies as a large dump of games for me. I haven't sold a game since and likely never will, even if it sucks.

Im in the process of dumping my old NES collection to my 5 year old nephew, I have about 70 or so games, and I never play my NES. I don't like it half as much as my SMS and my Genesis, I also have some atari carts I don't know what to do with, I have a working 7800 system, but its a bitch to connect up 600 different things just to play it for a short while.

I dumped nearly 100 Atari 2600 carts awhile back, I kept all the pre-crash first party stuff, and then kept the other games that I liked playing. I still have 250 or so carts and don't regret it in the slightest :)
If I get a hold of a Silver Gravitar I should have a complete pre crash first party set (minus some label variants of course)

I did the same thing...need to pick back up DN: Time to Kill someday :(
Biggest dump I ever made was about 9 years ago when I sold my NES and NES games in a garage sale so I could get Super Mario RPG. Back then, I thought it was alright cuz I was getting sick of the old games, but after awhile I started to miss them.

Heres a sob story for you. Father forced me to sell my Genesis, NES, SNES, and Saturn before I could get a Playstation. I think I got a measely hundred dollars or two for all of it. I had REALLY rare and/or expensive games. We're talking Lufia 2, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, FF6(3), Panzer Dragoon Saga, ect ect ect. The ONLY good game i got to keep was Dragon Force, and only because it was too scratched up and the video game store didn't want it. Still Plays fine though. Oh i was like 13 at the time. yeah that was my biggest dump.

I would say my biggest "dump" would be tied between:
1) Trading my Sega Genesis and 9 games (a lot when they were expensive as hell back then!) for a friend's SNES and only TWO games!!!
or
2) Taking my Game Gear, games, Master Gear Converter, carrying case, and adapter to a flea market....to get gas money....like maybe 20 dollars worth.
I vow to NEVER do such stupid things again!!!

(I feel bad for those who dumped dozens of games...)
I do too, but only for those who regret it. Personally, every once in a while I get this surge of collecting. I'll see a huge lot of Colecovision games or something, at a reasonable price (not even cheap), and I'll just have to buy it. Then I'll realize that I didn't have much interest, even though so many people here do, and I'll end up getting rid of it.
I have to force myself to only get games I know I want to keep forever, at this point. I totally understand people shuffling off a huge part of their collection that they really don't appreciate.
Problem is, I'm on my third gamecube (the last) and my third Ps2 (one of which broke). I seem to have periodically went "all retro" and then "all current," and back again. Now, I will focus on keeping everything that's not current gen, and even most of what I have that is.
If I kept every game I ever had, my collection would be three times as big (close to 1000 games). There would be a lot of doubles, for sure. I can't imagine how many times any given NES game has gone in and out of my collection in the last 5 or 6 years. It's been a full year since I have dumped a ton of stuff, and being on these forums have made me appreciate collecting a bit more, thankfully. :)
edit: I sold so much good stuff last year, too. I had to save up for an engagement ring... sold all of my Mega Mans... 1-6 for NES...

When you say dump, to me that implies giving stuff away, not selling it. I've sold a ton of stuff including a halfway complete O2 collection and console, all my INTV, Aquarius, 7800, SNES, Colecovision and TG-16 stuff. I've sold all my games from my breif flirtation with RPGs and I've sold/traded in a few other random games here and there. The only regrets I have are the CV and Bust a Move for the PSX.
Now, you wanna talk about real dumps, I've returned many things to the thrifts from which they came. All my Commodore stuff went back to the thrifts, stacks of SMB/DH carts, and some random other stuff. I've also given all my dupes away to friends getting into retro gaming at various points.
Oh and I've returned tons of records to the thrifts, including some "valueable" ones.
You can't put a value on good thrift karma and I figure giving a bit back when I've got so much appeases the thrift gods.

I dumped my entire 7800 and 2600 collections (and systems) when I was about 10-12 in order to buy Astyanax on NES. The 2600 and games were actually my dad's, but he didn't care if I kept them or not.
About 6 months later I started regretting it, and now, 14 years later, I still am! I don't think there were any actual "rare" games in there, so hopefully one day when I have the money/time, I can rebuild that collection...
