Just got my hands on MC3 over the weekend. I was wondering how this would be compared to NFS Underground 2. So far, I'm finding that they definitely took a page or three from NFS with the whole tuner culture feel, but I'm liking the way MC3 does it better. The racing in MC3 is more over the top than NFS U2, but I almost like that better too. I'd liken it to a SF Rush or Midway Thunder series versus Ridge Racer.
Anyway, just wondering what others think. At the core these games are pretty similar, but so far I'm preferring the craziness of MC3 to NFS U2.

I really like both of them-in a similar fashion to how I enjoyed MC2 and the first NFSU. Both excellent games, but each game has a specific feel to it, as you’ve illustrated.
Once everything is said and done, though, I have to give a bit more credit to NFSU 2, though.
It all boils down to car selection for me. I’m not personally into the whole bling-bling SUV thing(haha rhyme), nor am I into motorcycles. The selection of tuner cars is rather weak for Midnight Club, although the inclusion of classic muscle is welcomed and appreciated. Need for Speed just has a larger selection of cars that I’d like to play with. Plus, I can drive my real-life Ford Focus in NFS. :D One thing to note is that the tuner aspect in Midnight Club nearly makes up for the weak selection. It’s much more in-depth, with rim size, tire profile, and other small additions making NFSU’s tuning look like child’s play.
In terms of the actual gameplay, though, I think Midnight Club has an edge over Need for Speed here. I think it’s the over-the-top element, as you stated. There’s nothing like taking your car and launching it skyward, only to plant it into the side of a building. It embodies the ‘you’d never be able to do this in real life’ mantra that videogames have gotten away from more and more as of late. Plus, Midnight Club has cops. Makes those races a bit tougher when John Q. Law is trying to ram the shit out of your car. Both games have a similar set up in terms of the open city vibe, although I feel that Midnight Club is a bit more open-Need for Speed feels claustrophobic.
So when it really comes down to it, the flavor of game is what’s going to ultimately win you over. More arcadey style goes to MC3, down-to-earth goes to NFSU. Both excellent titles in their own right.
But damn that Ford Focus makes all the difference to me. LOL
