I'm trying to compile a list of all the TRADITIONAL SHOOTERS for the Game Gear... ones that scroll either horizontally or vertically. This means no platform games where you shoot a lot like Gunstar Heroes or isometric shooters like Arena: Maze of Death or fake 3-D shooters like F-15 Strike Eagle.

Old-school shooters where you stick to a predetermined path (like Space Harrier) are also on this list.

It's a short list so far!

Fantasy Zone
Aleste II (Power Strike II)
Arial Assault
Halley Wars
Space Harrier (old-school pseudo 3-D)

ALESTE was evidentally released for the Game Gear in Japan, but I understand it's different from Power Strike for the Master System. Anyone have any info on this?

Give me some more info on shooters, folks! I need some help!

:D

Yes, GG Aleste is a different game than the SMS one. Both GG Alestes are exclusives.

Another shooter that comes to mind is Galaga '91.

I know you just want a list, but I must use this time to pimp my review of Halley Wars, which was recently added to the DP review archive. READ IT! LOL

There was also Super Space Invaders, which got a US release.

For a bit of info...

GG Aleste (http://dynamic5.gamespy.com/~japangaming/game_information.php?&gm_id=1091)
GG Aleste II (http://dynamic5.gamespy.com/~japangaming/game_information.php?&gm_id=60)

If you're counting non-traditional shooters, there's Space Harrier & Panzer Dragoon Mini

Maybe you can count Panzer Dragoon Mini, but that's depnds on you're personal definition. I owned the game and I think it's a real shooter like Space Harrier. But maybe some people have a other opinion about it.

For the rest I don't really know, anyway I think shooters and handhelds are a bad combination anyway as I personal think it's too hard too avoid enemies on such a small screen.

Devilish might count....it's sort of a pinballish/breakoutish/shooter. Very strange, but basically a scrolling shooter.

I have Devlish at home... I'll have to try that one out and see.

I forgot all about Panzer Dragoom Mini. I heard it sucks, but I'd like to give it a try on its native hardware just for laughs.

Here are some pics of some shooters... I was going to do a comparison, but two of these games are nicely reviewed in the review section, so I'll just give a brief summary...

Aerial Assault

This horizontal shooters is super-simplistic and deadly dull. The boss battle are a joke.

Halley Wars

This one's a bit better, though still very simple and graphically dull.

Galaga '91
http://www.smspower.org/meka/gallery/galaga_91.gif

Now THIS is is pretty darn good! Classic Galaga with updated graphics, then followed by vertical scrolling levels. You can spend some time with this one!

Aleste GG
http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/aleste/ggaleste-1.png

I haven't played this one, but I hear it's very good.

Aleste II GG
http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/aleste/ps2gg-3.png

I HAVE played this, and I do believe it's one of the best shooters I've played on a portable system. I'd even rank it higher than Raiden on the Lynx or Iridian 2 for the GBA. The graphics could pass for early Genesis (aside from the flicker) and the game is FAST. I played it on EASY on a speed of ONE (it goes to EIGHT) and it was fast as hell!

Space Harrier
http://outerspace.terra.com.br/retrospace/materias/consoles/imagens/parte27/SpaceHarrier.gif

It's flicker city for the arcade classic. Looks kind of like the arcade game and plays pretty well, so I guess all is well.

Fantasy Zone
http://www.juegomania.org/emuladores/gamegear/0/80.jpg

I was never a big fan of Fantasy Zone, but I hear the conversion is quite good. It's certainly colorful enough.

The Game Gear didn't get many shooters, it seems... they sure as hell got a lot of platformers, though.

Hmm

:/
