I dont know much about anything pre-nes so I'll let the vets cover them.

NES-
Toss up between SMB3 and Kirby IMO.

SNES-
Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG have my vote.

And I'll let you guys cover the rest and if you feel that my vote were wrong tell me which games you think have better graphics.

I'll toss some of my eye candy choices for some classic and neo classic eras:
Atari 2600 - Ms. Pac Man
Atari 2600 w/ Supercharger - Escape from the mindmaster (First person 3D!!!) - a cheat I know but hey!
IntelliVision - Thunder Castle, Pac Man
ColecoVision - Zaxxon, Turbo
NES - SMB3 (still blows my mind that it's the NES and not the SNES)
SMS - Double Dragon
Genesis - Out of This World
SEGACD - Silpheed (all the way baybee!!!)
32X - Virtua Fighter

Off the top of my head anyway

You know, this could actually be quite a difficult topic :/

I'd have to say though, as RPG's go, Terranigma is probably right up there as one of the best looking games on the SNES, IMO, it's certainly better looking than CT.

RPG-wise my vote's torn between Terranigama and Tales of Phantasia (ToP has voice acting).

Tales of Phantasia's colors could use some work....they seem a bit bland and washed out to me.

I'm still impressed by Donkey Kong Country as far as SNES graphics go. Better graphics than some PSX games.

2600 - I thought California Games and Pitfall 2 where incredible.

Genesis - Comixzone

Snes - DKC series (amazing way of doing things)

PS1 Resident Evil set the mark

Sonic 3D Blast for Genesis is far and away the best looking AND most technically impressive game for the system. Mickey Mania and Toy Story are other highly impressive pieces, but not as jaw dropping as 3D Blast. Traveller's Tales certainly knew how to extract the last drops of a system's power (they also did Sonic R for Saturn, among other things).

Less impressive technically, but smooth and pretty: Puggsy, Sonic 1 (and 2 to a lesser extent....3 was just ugly), and the Dizzy game. Dizzy has such lush color, I wonder if it's running in that 128 color mode?

I agree on mickey mania. I just wanted to name it in this topic but it has already been done. Some of the effects in this game are very impressive.

I'd say Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System was one great looking game that blew away most console stuff in it's time (especially with it's monster graphics and 3D dungeons)

I think the best looking 16-bit game ever was Red Zone, an almost completely ignored title (it's not that great of a game, but damn if it isn't impressive).
