View Full Version : What's the most you've ever paid for a Prototype?

I'm just wondering whats the most some people have paid for a prototype/not for resale game. I've seen a few of them around and they range from $20 to $1000 or maybe even more!

Personally, I can't bring myself to buy a prototype game for at least twice the cost that the original game would be. Prototypes usually aren't as playable as the full game, and in other cases a prototype may be exactly the same as the original. I respect those who buy them for collection purposes however.

On a side note, does anyone know the legal issues in purchasing/selling a game that has "Not For Resale" stamped on it?

The most was probably around $100-125. The least? $0.33.

An official prototype? I paid a ton -- I think about $450.00, but would have to check -- for an Alien Vs. Predator prototype from Atari that was completely different.

Slightly different take on this thread (ie I won't lock this one), you might want to take a peek into the insights of several proto collectors here:

The most I ever paid for a prototype was $0.00. After picking up two games at an EB buy 2, get 1 free sale, I selected my third as an oddly marked Kiwi Kraze NES cart. Indeed, it was a proto.

You know, I always wondered what the deal was with the different screen shots in the magazines. So just out of curioisty, how does the proto compare to the actually released game? :)

At any rate, I don't think Battlesphere Gold is considered a proto-type, but if so, thats the most ($250).

I paid $100 and change for a Sonic 3 EPROM cart (http://www.projectnemesis.ibforums.com/localhmc/s3proto/) that is nonetheless identical to the final as far as I can tell. I believe it to be a final testing copy, probably burnt not too long before the game went to production.

Isn't that the alpha you bought from me many moons ago? I thought I sold it to you for $250.00 or so. :D

Not a ton, I bought a buncha PlayStation proto's from Nesman85 a while back and mathmatically for the lot it was pretty damn cheap when broken down per item (under $20 per game).

I paid $300 for an NTSC unreleased atari 2600 game. It was a DDSB atari lab loaner. (Do you know what it is??? :) ) I paid quite a bit for my ATARI demon attack lab loaner as well. I would probably never sell the later.

Well I just bought these SMS proto's for $46.04 USD. I just got these 2 days ago in the mail. These are my first proto's ever. So I am happy with my buy...and only $7.67 each. I need more SMS proto's plus I want the promo SMS system. :)
