Okay, don't laugh at me, please. :)

But I've never played this game and looked at it today and did'nt know what the heck was going on......

Could someone be kind enough to tell me:
1) What everything on the screen is and what it does
2) What the goal of the game is and how to do it
3) Some hints
4) What benchmarks are considered to be 'good' with the game

Thanks!

See that thing on the far right? You need to shoot away the barricade, go up and touch it. This will make a missile appear on the left which you can launch to try and hit the thing on the right. The trippy stuff in the middle is a safe zone from that small rectangle that comes after you.

The goal of the game is to power up your Zorlon cannon and fire it at the "qotile", that being the flashing thing on the right.

The glowing bar flying around the screen is a "smart missile" that homes in on you. Staying the vertical gibberish bar or "neutral zone" makes you invulnerable to that, but not to the pinwheel of death, as I call it. The Qotile turns into that and fires periodically, and can't be blocked by staying the neutral zone.

To power up the Zorlon cannon, either touch the qotile, or take your Yar over the red shield around it and, well, eat it. Alternately you can shoot the shield open. Either way, once you get a rainbow appearing on the left side, that's your zorlon. It fires when you press the red button, and at that point you have to move the fuck out of the way. You'll want to aim for the qotile, although if you hit it in pinwheel form you get a chunk more points if I recall.

I've played this game for years and never knew the smart missile couldn't get you in the neutral zone. Good grief.

Having just learned that, I played a quick game and managed to achieve a personal high score of 150,000 points on setting 0. I'm sure that pales in comparison to what some of you have done. But I was pretty happy with that.

Anyway, good game. :)

yeah.
shooot away the idiot on the right side's shield. or push against it to eat it, which is halfway effective. eating will get you a missile as will touching the idiot.
press fire to fire hte missile. warning, your own missile can kill you, and you cannot shoot in the safezone.
the angry dash taht comes after you will kill you, and speeds up as the game rolls on....
its a blast, man. Greg, if you ever wanna talk 2600, feel free to pm.aim.orwhatever at me.

Avoid missing Quotile for high score. No wait --

For big fun, try to hit the fireball in mid-flight for big points, and -- it gives you a chance to see one of the more famous 2600 Easter Eggs.

Notice that the Quotile will change colors, and the hotter it looks the closer to fireballing it is. You can't touch it when it's flashing red or white.

Be sure to select the option where you actually have to touch the back wall to load your cannon -- I think that's game 3. If it's set to just appear, you will accidentally shoot yourself in the back way too often.

Use the Neutral Zone and the wraparound screen to evade the freakin' homing missile.

Yar's Revenge rules. Why, oh why, won't anybody do an update? I think there's a lot potential there.

There was a kinda-update on the Game Boy Color. It started off playing just like old Yars, but after you progressed a certain ways into it it started throwing other stuff at you, notably levels where there was no shield to power the Qotile from, and a couple other threats.

I personally liked it, some people were disappointed, but if you like Yars Revenge it's not something you can go wrong with.

Anyone think a 3-D Yar's would work or be a waste?

A great game, a little too easy imo, I didn 't know how to play it and then figured out how and enjoyd it. The point counter resets after 199,000 doesn't it?

Yknow... like most every 2600 game, the experience with it really depends on what game variation you play and what the difficulty switches are set to. Personally I dig Game 4 since it has the bouncing Zorlon cannon. That and setting the difficulty switch to A makes for a more intense Yars :D

Or of course you could try out that "Ultimate Yars" thing.. but that one always seemed funky to me :hmm:

Good point. Some 2D ideas don't translate very well in 3D. :)

You had it set to difficulty "b", didn't you? That's the one for 3-year-olds

Thanks for the link! I haven't heard that for a LONG time. I used to have the book & cassette that it was originally on.

Yeah there was a whole story behind that game and I really used to dig it as a kid! Game is one of the best to me also.
