View Full Version : DP Paper version done for?
Ok, I just got the latest issue of DP in the mail. And supposedly it's the last issue? X_x
Now my question: Is this a late APril fool's joke, or is it for real! And if it's for real, what about my remaining three issues! I want them, gosh darnit..... :eek 2:
Also, if it is the last issue, why are there ads throughout on subscribing to the fanzine!
I think it's a joke - I hope.

Well, I wrote for the beautiful lil' thing (Klaus), it is sad news indeed.
I've been on board since last summer, and had lots of fun writing articles. It was a short and very sweet ride. I feel sad. Imagine how it is for the veterans and the founder, they are crushed.
Even worse is the fact that I'll post MORE now since the channel for my game obsession has vanished. You'll get more lectures with the Mr. Know-it-all attitude, and you have to read them all!
There was just no other way, let's hope for better times.

I'll be disappointed if that's the case. If it's true, it may be the end for subscribing to gaming publications for me. I've subscribed to one gaming mag or another since the mid-90's but in the past year or so, I've pretty much tired of them all. It may be time to save my money and do my game reading online...

Well, it's sad to hear this is the truth. I still wonder what happens to issues that people didn't get. Will refunds be issued, or our people of of the few bucks they payed? Personally, DP can keep the money and put it toward whatever it costs to run the DP site and forum. :)

Sometimes I get the impression that people on this board eagerly anticipate the demise of gaming products and publications. "IS NINTENDO DONE FOR?" "IS SONY PSP = TEH SUX AND DONE FOR?" "IS EGM DONE FOR?"
At least make them a poll so that we can vote on whether they're done for or not.

As for the magazine being done, no clue whether or not it's true. I really hope not.... I was planning on resubscribing soon. I have been off the list for like 3 months meaning to resubscribe. I hope not, gotta stop taking it for granted if it's not.

You know. The DP logo and an image from the Meaning of Life CD-i commercial. I gave the image to Joe cuz I've had it like forever. Joe said he may change it though, maybe he wont put it in leather either. Me and Joe have been like best friends since we were born like in the same hospital and our moms would hang out like every day.

The problem with it is that by the time the issue comes, we're long past April Fool's Day and it's not 'funny' anymore, so our brains don't think in that mode.
I can see people getting confused over it. :)

I think part of the reason for DP (paper) going away is the cost. If that is the case, I would be more than happy with a PDF version (as in Acrobat, not Mr PDF :D ). I'd rather have that than nothing at all...

I had expected DP INDUSTRIES to step in by this time but I have a feeling that the corporation's annual sales kick-off meeting in Rio may have been a bit more of a success than I expected it to be. They were supposed to be back in the offices on Monday but when I called in all I got was a message saying that they would be "away until further notice". And it was in a robotic voice.

That's the way I felt, I just didn't "get it" because April Fools day was about a month and a half ago, kinda like getting a Christmas issue in February.
But I understand it now, I was confused when I got it, but things are well now. I did read most of the articles too, loved the Tater Tot and Polybius articles Flack! :D

As I allready mentioned previously, I thought it was a poor joke only because of the timing.
Now, if on April Fool's Day Joe had come on here and said 'Hey! I'm going to India to smoke pot and follow in the footsteps of Ricky Williams and the site is going down tonight for good! -- THAT would be a good April Fool's Day joke. Actually, a DAMN good one. ;) :P

The issues are bimonthly, so the timing was just fine. And as I said originally in this topic, it was really obviously a joke once you started reading. Nearly every article talked about a "hoax".

Not only that, but many of the articles had hints that the issue was an April's Fool issue. I will give you an example.
In my Polybius article, I said that a Polybius cabinet was found in Ropio Falls. Obviously, anyone who knows anything about arcades knows this isn't true. The end of the article says "the answer lies in Ropio Falls." First of all, there is no Ropio Falls. Second of all, "Ropio Falls" is an anagram of "April Fools". Third of all, if you type "Ropio Falls" into Google (or search the forum for it) you will find a note from me that says there is no Ropio Falls, and that it's an April Fools joke.
Scooterb23 is the only person that I know of who figured that out and e-mailed me. There are other things like that hidden in there as well I believe.

I think it was a good joke if only because it could've happened for real (how many zines disappeared through the years to be reborn in a virtual Net edition, if at all?)...
Heck, I don't hear people whining beyond the initial shock over the annual EGM April's Fool joke -- even though it's now considered as a tradition, publishing schedules do make the EGM April's Fool joke also slightly out of time -- does that kill off the joke? Of course not!
IMO, it's the same thing where DP the zine is concerned. It's a bi-monthly, therefore, whichever issue includes April would be the logical place for an April's Fool joke.

WHAT???? It was a joke? and I cried, whined, and screamed like a woman for nothing?
It was a bad joke! Only April fools jokes are good which are immediately recognized as hoaxes; if people fall for it, they aren't good at all. So I believe, so it is written.

It's the April / May issue. It might not have wound up in your hands until May, but it's still our April Fool's ish. :) Think of it like Super Mario Bros.
Usually, you see a "?" and jumpup and punch it. You get a coin, or a prize or whatever. You're so accustomed to punching those "?"s that you don't think twice about expecting a prize when you punch one. And after punching the 1000th "?" it's a little old.
When all the April mags hit the newsstand (EGM, Tips & Tricks, etc.) everyone immediately starts looking for the "April Fool's Day" gags. They expect them. So in a sense, they're not fooling anyone.
We're a little different. We like to make a game out of everything. And we know you're GOOD.
So back to SMB for a second... Sometimes, there are invisible blocks here and there. The invisible blocks don't play by the same rules... they're invisible! But if you're clever, you've found all of them, yes?
In a nutshell, that's our April Fool's issue. We intentionally threw you off the trail by getting it to you in May. It's an invisible block -- it still gives you the same April Fool's Day goodness, but it's not in the place you were looking for it. And when you discover the secret, you get that rush, like when you found the invisible blocks in SMB. Well, something like that anyway. :D
