Hello, and welcome to another weekly feature here at DP! It's called "Friday Scoreboard", and here's how it goes: Every week I'll choose a different game at random from any console. I'll then post my choice in the Video Gaming forum. Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Get the highest score for the week. Simple, huh?
And now, the obligatory Rules And Regulations:
- No continues are allowed. Once it's Game Over, it's Game Over. (No save states, either. :P)
- No cheats or codes, of course.
- Always use the default (or chosen) settings only. This gives everyone a level playing field.
- Emulators can be used, as well as playing the real thing.
- To act as proof of your score, a screenshot must be taken.
- If anybody needs webspace to host a screenshot that they've taken, you can e-mail it to me at gapporin@onlineNOSPAM.ie (of course, remove the NOSPAM part before sending an e-mail)
- You can submit a score as many times as you want. The only time you have to stop submitting scores is after the cutoff date.
- The cutoff date for submitting scores will be Wednesday night. After that, I will tally up the scores and redeem the meseta for everybody who won.
- Have fun! :)
A meseta prize will given out to the winners of the Scoreboard. 1st place gets 500 meseta, 2nd place gets 400, 3rd place gets 300, 4th place gets 200, and 5th place will get 100. BIG MONEY! BIG PRIZES! I LOVE IT!
This week's game is Kaboom! Grab the bombs as they fall and try to foil the Mad Bomber from blowing up the screen!
Also, as an added incentive, anybody who makes the Bucket Brigade (3,000 points or more) will get an additionial 100 meseta from myself, no matter which placing you get!
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your favorite controller and let's go!

Is this going to get stickied?
I don't have paddles for my Atari 2600, so I get to use my crappy mouse and an emulator :)
First score: 1398

Looks like I'm gonna have to find an emulator for this one.

Tried playing this on emulator but it's a tough one. I have an Atari and some paddles in my closet, and wouldn't you know it I have this cartridge too, I've just never ever played it until now :D So I'll hook all that stuff up tomorrow and give this a whack. There's no escaping from me ;)

Dang, I'll have to practice. The 3,000 mark is cake but beyond that is rough, I have gotten at least 5 or 6k in score though so maybe I can run the high score on this board.

This is off topic but did any of you happen to see that girl wipe the floor with Kaboom at NWCGE last year??

You're a much better man than I. Even using regular Atari paddles, I struggle to make 2,000 points in a good game. That's the good thing about Kaboom!, though, it's quite addicting once you get into the mood.

That's strange. Carpet stains are tough to get out with a Kaboom! cartridge. :P
Seriously, though, I haven't. What happened?

I love this game. It's always been my dads favorite so I used to play it a decent amount with him.
My high score is about 2,300.... forget the exact numbers after that.
Does anyone else purposly die around 900ish.... so then you get the bucket back at 1,000 and it slows down? I do that everytime.

Yep! Then after 2000, I do it again (Too bad the bombs go so damn fast after that!)
Here's my Newest Score (and a personal best): 2386

I'm going to get to 3,000 Pts. if it kills me! I hate the Mad Bomber more than that Skifree Yeti! :D

I don't know how you guys managed to get close to 3,000 points. I'm lucky enough to get around to 200.

This is a cool idea. I never really playe this game before but I have it on Atari so I am game. I just played half an hour, my best was 1844, but I'll try to better it through the week
Game on!

It was during the 2004 Atari 2600 World Championship. We had to play games that used all the different controllers. We were playing kaboom and after we were all done, she just kept going and going and going and going. it was really cool to watch. She built quite a crowd of people around her and she got a big applause when she was done.

Kaboom is one of my favourite games of all time. As a result, I play it a lot and am quite good at it. I can get over 100k every game but something always goes wrong along the way in my mission to beat the game. My current high score is 494k (pic below), but I did that a few months ago. Does that count or do I have to play a game and take a pick this week? It doesn't really matter because I can easily whip up a 100k+ game this week if I have to.
PS: how long has this weekly high score thing been going on? I haven't seen it, but maybe I'm just blind.

:eek 2:
In the interest of fairness, I am going to say that you must play a new game this week. But, man, that's huge. Maybe you should play with Difficulty A to try and handicap yourself. ;) :P

About two months now (man, it doesn't even feel that long). Although, I will admit it has been slow in gaining popularity and whatnot. Offering meseta prizes hasn't hurt in that aspect. ;)

Okay, I'll handicap myself with diff A. I know I've scored 4k in diff A mode, but I don't think I've ever hit 5k. Then again, I rarely use those useless tiny buckets. They're so frustrating.
On a side note: if you want to get good at Kaboom, don't drop a bomb on purpose right before each 1000pts. It seems like a good idea, but all it really does is prevent you from seeing (and subsequently practicing) the higher speeds/levels.

494k :eek 2:
game over man, game over!
I can sqweek in arround 2k, 2500 when I'm in the zone.
Doesn't seem to be a lot of participation. =( maybe I'll actually win something!
My score: 1958

Well, I played for a little bit the other night and got an "okay" high score, then the next morning I checked this thread and saw the 494K pic...and gave up.
Now that I see the contest is still going, I'll go ahead and post my meager 1st offering-2431

Take that!

Here's my diff A high score (6,344). A new personal record for me on the tougher difficulty, and it does leave the door open for someone else to top this on Diff B. I don't think 7k with diff B is that unreasonable. So who's gonna step up to the plate?

Well, probably should wrap it up for this week. Here's the final rankings:
1st: Dr. Morbis - 6,344 (on diff. A as well, impressive!)
2nd: Wavelflack - 2,431
3rd: DDCecil - 2,386
4th: Keir to the nth power - 1,958
And since Dr. Morbis scored over 3,000 points, he also gets an additional 100 meseta from myself. Enjoy!
Now that that's been taken care of, I have a question to ask: What game would you like to see in the Friday Scoreboard? I've noticed that participation is starting a gain a little, but either I choose games that people don't like, or my choices are a little "out there". So, if you've got an idea, send me a hand-written letter, put two stamps on the envelope, and...aw, never mind. Just shoot me a PM. Thanks! :)
