In honor of mother's day, a poll about mothers.

I'm thinking that most of us are "1st generation" gamers - our parents simply didn't have pc/console games growing up. But how many out there have a mom who picked up the habit somewhere along the way.

Personally, my mom doesn't console - but she can while away entire nights (literally) playing solitare variants (freecell and whatnot) on our old computer.

Provided Tetris and Spider Solitaire count, then yeah...she's definitely a gamer.

The only games my mom plays are light gun games for sms and nes, especially gangster town for nes. Those are really the only games she can play though. I let her play mario and bonk before and she kept jumping onto enemies and into water. She still gives me a lot of crap for playing games though.

She doesn't play anymore.. But back when we played Atari every night, she would also join in on the action and play Kangaroo, as well as Ms. Pac-Man. She even used to play Super Mario Bros. on the NES.

um, well sorta. the played south park: chef's luv shack once, but she never pushed the A button quck enough to buzz in. i would always have to tell her to push the button every single time. also when i first got halo 2, and i wanted to try out the multiplayer, i insisted that she play it, and she had fun just spinning around in the corner. i killed her about 10 times and she only killed me once, and that was when i accidentally walked in front of her as she was swinging the energy sword around. in co-op mode, she could'nt get the hand of moving around, and after a few minutes of her just spinning around staring at the sky, the little window popped up telling her to push the left thumbstick to move, along with the little illustration of a thumbstick. i said "okay, mom, push the left thumbstick to move" she looked at the illustration and said "hey, those look like mushrooms!" annoyed, i cooperated and said " :hmm: okay, push the left mushroom forward to move your guy. see, there are two 'mushrooms'. the left one is to move, and the right one if to look around." she never quite learned how to work it, so i just got in the tank and drove away.

When I was young and the NES was still the main system in the US I would always beg my mom to play games with me but she never would. She would watch sometimes but would never play. My dad is and was the same way. Though it was funny, years ago (I was 6 at the time) when I parents first bought me an NES I would go off and play or whatever and every so often when i would come back to my room my dad was in there playing Super Mario Brothers LOL I just always found that a little funny cause my dad hates video games. Though, he used to play Duck Hunt with me every now and then.

Doesn't play, but doesn't think ill of the habit.

My mom wouldnt know how to turn one on. She thought my gamecube was the dvd player. She is always on the look out for games are yard sales though.

My mom used to play games up until Journey Escape on the 2600 came out, at which point she figured that once you beat the game, there was nothing more to really do in it.

Well that, and she couldn't figure out any games more complex.

My grandma on the other hand played games up until a stroke a couple years ago made it too hard for her to use the controller.

My mother oline liked Duck Hunt, she tried other zapper-games but didn't like them, she didn't like when we (me and my brother) traded the old nes for a snes and never played a videogame again. Oh yes of course she plays solitaire and mahjong/shanghai sometimes.

Nope, never has never will. She doesn't mind me playing them though. Now my dad on the other hand, still is stuck in the good ole days and can't believe I play so many video games for my age.

Ive never seen my mother pick up a videogame once in her life, and I don't believe she's going to start anytime soon... she's almost 80.

She's proud of me, though for some reason.

I love my mom!

But back when we played Atari every night, she would also join in on the action and play Kangaroo, as well as Ms. Pac-Man. She even used to play Super Mario Bros. on the NES.

Same here, she also still plays games like The Next Tetris (best Tetris game ever IMO), Scrabble, Millionaire, etc. on the PlayStation. Also arcade driving games from time to time.

Though it was funny, years ago (I was 6 at the time) when I parents first bought me an NES I would go off and play or whatever and every so often when i would come back to my room my dad was in there playing Super Mario Brothers LOL

My uncles used to do that, I'd come home from school and they'd be playing Top Gun with the NES Advantage. Although that's fine, one of them introduced me to video games with Grand Prix on the Atari 2600 so it just came full circle.

I tried to get my mom to play vcity once... Bad mistake

Another time when her 2 friends came over, one of em muscled in on ago on my eyetoy and we started havinga little compo and somehow persuaded my mum to have a go and she whooped all our asses.

Lesson learnt = Don't let your mum play eyetoy :P

My mom liked Snood for the longest time, so I showed her Puzzle Bobble and she hasn't looked back since. I gave her one of my Saturns along with Bust-A-Move 2 & 3 over the winter. As a result, she doesn't bust on me for my collecting habit these days.

The only games my mom has played and loved are Superman and ET for the 2600 and D for the 3DO. My mom (who "doesn't understand those electric toys") sat up one night way past 1am trying to beat D, and she did! Said she really liked it. That was the last time she's picked up a controller that I know of.

I remember she used to kick ass at Solstice!

First off, Happy Mom's Day to everybody's mom. :)

Before I was even born, my mom was a Pong fanatic. She said she was unbeatable back then, but a couple years ago I found an old Pong system (ColorSport VIII)... I would have let her won the match if it wasn't for her "I'm such a pro" bragging I've heard quite a few times. :)

When I was a kid, my mom would play Super Mario Bros. on my NES after I went to bed. Back in the heyday of the Genesis, my older cousin came over and brought along his Sega Genesis and CD one time, and she really got into Ecco The Dolphin (the Sega CD version). However, she hasn't played anything for years. She did admit a little while ago that the reason she doesn't play video games now is because they're too addicting.

my grandma's a die hard tetris and solitaire fan, and she even owns a Game boy pocket just for playing tetris. my dad is actually pretty good at games like Halo 2 and all the tom clancy games. in fact he's over there in my room playing splinter cell right now. even my teacher is obsessed with ms. pac man. @_@

My Mom is into card games, and pretty much nothing else.

In the 'classic' days, she played Las Vegas Blackjack! on the old Odyssey2 almost every day. She just loved the game. She never really got into games on the other systems. She was an Odyssey2 fan :D

Today, she plays cards game on the computer she has. She's really into the Hoyle collections in particular, but will play anything thing 'card' related. She also like the Freeverse Software card game - the ones with the Jared character (floating yellow head).

My mom only plays certain games. She doesn't play nearly as much as she used to back in the days of the NES and Genesis. She used to play the original SMB on the NES with my dad. She also had to help me out with Adventures in the Magic Kingdom since she could breeze through the Space Mountain section that I found very difficult.

When we got a Genesis in about '90 or so, she had to help me with Quackshot once or twice. Championship Bowling and Side Pocket were two more of her favorite Genny games. I have fond memories of the whole family (me, my dad, my mom, and my younger brother) playing those two together. Ahh, nostalgia. :D

Sure, my mom plays games. Although she doesn't play them anymore, she use to play Mario Bros. and Little Nemo with me all the time back when I was young. I remember her always falling off the cliff in the first or second level of Mario 1 and having to wait till I died to play again. LOL

I think the most amazing thing though is she actually remembers alot of games I liked or played in the past. For example, one time I was talking about Super Castlevania IV for one reason and she said "oh, is that the game with the squeaky chandelier?".

Way back in 1989 I brought original Gameboy w/Tetris home on leave from the military. My mom liked it so much I bought her her own GB for her birthday the next year. Fifteen years later and she still keeps that GB with Tetris in her bedroom nightstand for regular play. I don't think the cart has ever left the machine even once.

Other than that she's also hopelessly addicted to Snood and MahJong on the PC. That's the extent of her gaming, though.

Game on, Mom! I love ya...

My mother used to play the Intellivision and our Atari 7800, we had quite a few games for it, she definitely loved Midnight Magic for the 2600, one of her favorite games. A lot of times she would play Super Mario Brothers three with me, but now, she sort of sits back and watches me play. Everynow and then I catch her playing my Genesis, she really likes the Arcade Classics game she bought me a couple years ago :-P

when we got a nes, i was so young that it was kinda difficult for me to do anything on it, my mom would watch over me while i played, and sometimes we would play 2 player SMB together, i remember her not really understanding how to play but she thought it was a neat concept.

My mum has her PS2. She likes retro games, and puzzlers - Easy things that she can pick up and put down.

Lately though, she has developed an unnatural taste for FPS war games like Brothers In Arms and MOH...

She also likes Pokemon Snap and Noone Lives Forever??? :/

My mom "used to" play...not anymore/lost interest.got older...
My Day still plays though and has been playing more and more lately.
.............................................
She does have a colectors habit in her as she collects exotic birds/birds.
So me collecting games doesn't strike her as being unusual, when she comes here and looks..

My mom plays a little, and she's a fan of the usual genre - puzzle games - but not the usual titles. Her favorite game EVER is Yoshi's Cookie for the NES. A quality game if I do say so myself. LOL She also likes Nightshade for the NES, but never could get very far. I gave her an old PS1 I found while cleaning my closet (I have no idea how long it was in there ^^;) and she bought a few games for it. She really likes Spyro ('cause it's cute 8-) ) and Mr. Domino, but they're both too hard for her. After a couple weeks of explanation, however, I did finally get her to stop rotating the controller as though it would affect the game. LOL

Games are my hobby, really, not hers, but she doesn't mind that I like games at all. I love my mom. :D

My mother used to play a lot of PC games. Mostly stuff like Monopoly, simple jump'n'runs and flash games. Especially Monopoly got her hard: more than one time she played a whole night and noticed she should be off for work in one or two hours. It was kinda funny when she told me something like that.

I still didn't choose the hardcore gaming option because she only played like that for one or two years and only simple games. But still I was proud of her about it!

She used to play SMB, Sonic 2, and Ghosts & Goblins(!!!) but not anymore. Still has a healthy appetite for games though. Solitaire, Tetris, Dr. Mario, Yoshi's Cookie, Wario's Woods, Puyo Puyo, Spot (the NES game), and she loves the Game Gear I gave her with Columns, Super Columns & Dr. Robotnik.

I'm pretty shure if I pissed my mom off before going to vacation I would be missing the vast majority of my collection.

When my mother was still alive, she would play and clear the original Mario game on the NES in the same fashion as the most hardcore Marioers among you. That's the only game that she bothered with.

I can't clear the game if my life depended on it. LOL

I would probabley say that my mom is the most intense gaming mom on Earth. LOL Maybe not, but she plays games ALL THE TIME!!! She has been playing my whole life, and used to give my friends and I help with games back in the NES era. I remember she made maps for Zelda, and my friends and I would use them.
Her claim to fame is that she has beat all the Zelda games (minus hand helds) released. And that she had a very high score on Rayman 3, and was ranked pretty high on Raymanzone.com.
My friends think it's hilarious that she plays games all the time, but I couldn't imagine it any other way. :)

My mother has been playing games sense we got the 2600 back in 82. When I got Ikari Warriors for the NES, she played that lots. She didnt pick up another game untill Tetris was released. After that, Simcity on the SNES. Now days, she doesnt play many console games. Mostly PC. Basicly its more because PC can be used for so much more then simply playing games. Also, she only has a SNES and a GBA SP (even i dont have one!). Now days she plays Harvest Moon lots.

Nes-A-Holic--Best advice I can give ya is find a game genre she could posibly enjoy and invite her to play. If she screws up while playing it, dont make snide coments, laugh, or bitch about it (she's your MOTHER!) and congratulate her for good performance and such. Yeah, it does sound like your treating her like a kid, but the best way I have ever found to converting people who think of console games as childs play is to allow them to experience it in a way comfertable to them. Being positive helps lots as well.

Yes, my mom likes to play video games occasionaly. She is mostly a NES only player, but man does she love Tetris, Dr. Mario, Pac-Man, and Burger Time! She will play other console games too. She was interested enough in Super Monkey Ball and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! to try them out.

My mom actually got a GBA SP last Christmas... when I heard from my dad she wanted one, I actually went out to Circuit City the day after Thanksgiving to grab the Pearl White version for her. She also got Super Puzzle Fighter II, Namco Museum, and Dr. Mario... I was as stunned as anyone she actually wanted a Game Boy.
