I'm normaly not a graphics-whore but today I saw the screenshots for the upcoming wrestling game "WWE Day of Reckoning 2" and i was just thinking "wtf?" cause those look really ridiculously good. The level of detail is insane at least.
And it really makes me wonder how much unused power actually is left in this-gen consoles.

Anyone who played WWE DoR 1 knows that the part 1 already featured great graphics but the devs managed to rise the polygon-count up to 30%(!!).
The more poylgons are also used for displaying the whole audience(instead of using simple bitmaps).

what do you think? I'm not needing any next-gen console yet,for gods sake.

looks nice but how is the gameplay?

Are those Gamecube screens? I thought I read somewhere that DoR 2 was going to be exclusive to that system...

Those ARE amazing graphics! I'm definitely not ready for a new generation of systems either. Besides not wanting to shell out hundreds of dollars, I'm satisfied with the new games coming out right now.

sorry I forgot to mention that it is (exclusive) for gamecube(like part 1)
and yes these are gamecube-screenshots from the running game

Well, it's a wrestling game... they are usually the same. Like it or not. And I don't. :)

There is PLENTY of untapped power in these current gen consoles. But that's just how it is. It doesn't help that companies - Microsoft this time around - are pushing new consoles before their time. And the Xbox2 *is* coming way too early in my opinion. I don't know how that strategy is going to pan out for them. They obviously fear the competition. But I'm a harden Xbox gamer and I won't be jumping ship for a considerable while yet.

I actually think the PlayStation is an excellent example of proving that it was still capable of much more toward the end of its lifespan.

To be quite honest, it doesn't help when next gen platforms launch with games you could easily mistake for current gen releases.

How wrong you are. Throw in WWF Warzone for the PS1 and then throw in Fire Pro D on the Dreamcast. Come back and say that again.

Boring? Have you played WCW/NWO revenge or Wrestlemania 2000 with 3 of your closest friends?

WCW NWO Revenge
Wrestlemania 2000
No Mercy

all are awesome & DOR ids gear but not as good as No Mercy!!

I like WWE Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain's season Mode. But I will def get DOR 2. I was hoping for Wrestlemania 21 on xbox but it is a disaster, which isn't that shocking to expect from xbox

WWF Royal Rumble for the Genesis is the best wrestling game IMO.

Ah, of course... I figured someone would say this. I thought maybe I'd get a break.

I'm talking about American Wrestling games. Not a relatively obscure Japanese wrestling game for the dreamcast.

edit: And I'd like to point out that old WWF Superstars-type games for the arcade or SNES were a ton of fun. It's just this "tap tap RUN... clothesline -- Grapple... taptaptaptap... Piledriver --- stomp... stomp" crap. It get's old, it's all too clunky.

Ok, ok. Replace "Fire Pro D" with "WWF No Mercy" on the N64. Then come back and say that again. LOL

Yeah, that's probably my favorite n64 wrestling game. Still very similar to nWo vs. whatever, and Wrestlemania 2000. You honestly think it's that different than other wrestling games?

I've been a wrasslin' fan for years and years, and Pro Wrestling was the first NES game I bought back when the system was brand new (go Starman!). Anyways, nowadays there seem to be four styles of wrestling games (in order of what seems to be the generally accepted level of quality):
1) Fire Pro series.
2) THQ/Aki's N64 classics (WCW vs. NWO through No Mercy).
3) PS1/PS2 Smackdown series.
4) Everything else (which is to say, donkey ass).
So I think there is a wide variety in the quality and gameplay of modern wrestling games. Admittedly, the first Day of Reckoning wasn't quite "donkey ass", but it wasn't really up there with the better titles. Let's hope this one improves (unlike the recent Wrestlemania 21 on the Xbox *shudder*).

Wrestling seems to be a genre that is either great or horrible, with no room in between. There have been some great ones (as people mentioned, the THQ/Aki N64 ones) and there have been some horrible ones (WWF Attitude or ECW Anything anyone?).

I wish that programmers would sit down and really think through a way to handle the whole storyline thing better. I mean, that's the appeal of wrestling for the most part -- and it has been sorta, kinda, almost done in the past. Having you be able to align with people, start your own groups of people and name them, decide how you are going to deliver your speeches to the crowd (happy / angry, nice / mean to crowd) and being able to change things up as you went would be awesome. Deciding if you wanted to run in and beat up someone else because of their speech, or help save someone who was getting beat up, and so on... All of this could be done, but no game has done it.

For the pure fighting, wrestling games by nature have to pander to the general back-and-forth nature of wrestling, which makes them not-so-great in my opinion to play a lot of the modern ones. Put in the above stuff and let my actions when I'm not brawling matter, and I would be into the game enough to probably even check in to see if I recognize any of the wrestlers anymore on the real show :)

Well, DoR is great when it comes to the gameplay (to me, anyway) its just that some of the extra features, such as season, weren't that great. I personally thought that the gameplay was outstanding. Just my opinion :)

I agree with you on this, bigtime. That is everything that wrestling is about! I can't wait until one of the big developers figures this out.

Yeah those screens look really nice. The N64 grapplers are still a blast to play and they're pretty much my top choice. IMO, most of the recent Smackdown games have had much nicer graphics, but playing them is similar to shite...

I honestly don't think even the superior hardware of the Xbox could've saved that game.. it was just terrible... absolute trash.

But, that isn't that shocking to expect from a wrestling game. :P
