Fantastic. but we're still waiting for it to really happen. the hype has dropped so much that I read articles like this that would have made me drop my jaw back in October and do NOTHING for me now.

Still nothing on an online Mario Kart. I really think that's the killer.

Yeah. This would have got me so excited if they announced it a couple months ago.I hope we can go online Sooner rather than later this year....

An online MMORPG would be so kick ass on the DS.

Good news for the DS. Maybe this will breathe new life into it.

It all sounds cool, but I'm pretty sure this is all stuff we've known for a couple months now. Not sure why IGN is breaking it as news suddenly. Heh.

Not sure why? Because it was confirmed that the servers will be hosted by GameSpy (which happens to be owned by IGN).

Same news, from nearly 2 months ago. Heh. I guess IGN just felt like pointing it out again or something. Oh those wacky attention whores.

Nintendo will not require any subscription charges to enable internet access on the Nintendo DS. The wireless service will be able to connect to home network Wi-Fi connections as well as free or subscription-based hotspots in public locations.

Damn right! I'd buy a DS to play Animal Crossing and Mario Kart against /with people. This great!

what are some stores that always have wi fi connections? I would like to try twisted metal online with my psp since I do not have a home wi fi conection. I heard mcdonalds has one.

Around here, most any coffee shop, like Starbucks. Also I think book stores like Books-a-million and Barnes and Noble. Also the tech building on our local college campus....

Super Mario Kart is one of the few games that I actually have played online. Despite my nearly nonexistent interest in online gaming, I could see myself getting into playing a new Mario Kart on DS online, assuming if the game was well-made.

DS servers are gonna be hosted by gamespy?

Ugh. I suppose i have to give them my SSN and a DNA sample first right? And then they install programs on my DS that force me to read webcomics, and then charge me for it.

Well, wifi will eventually become universal in most American cities. Many cities are pushing for universal wifi access, and encountering the usual resistence from cable and phone companies. It would, after all, cut into their profits, but since they charge far too much for broadband and wifi internet service, having cities provide free access would be a boon for us schmucks.

Whether or not you get to benefit anytime soon depends, I suppose, on whether or not you live near a major city.

Hopefully Nintendo will be able to fully take advantage of wifi for the DS. It has great potential, and only needs a lot of good games to support it. If this ends up being like the Dreamcast, I won't be too happy.

I would be very, very surprised if any future major console or handheld isn't online. It's pretty much the standard at this point, and a significant portion of the gaming population demands it.

Personally I think merely picto-chatting with friends would be fun!!!

As for internet costs in this country!!!

I have a friend in Sweden who pays: $25/month for 10Mbit/sec!!!!

The same company offers 0.5 Mbit for $6/month!!!

THIS JUST IN:

Nintendo is to release it's own special type of router. This was mentioned in the same confrence where the Revolution free classic games rumor was shot down. They sort of touched base with this sweet piece of Nintendo Internet. However on the following website (LINK: http://teamcrea.free.fr/122354_nintendo/dswifiusbkey_18653_nintendo.htm), there is a picture of what it is supposed to look like. Is this the standard for the DS online? Will regular Wireless routers work? Who knows. Maybe. Maybe not. Only time, and Nintendo, will tell.

That Photoshop hack job picture has been around since before the DS was even released.

Lol, if you need a proprietary router to use the DS and/or the revolution, Nintendo is even dumber than I thought (and that may not be possible). I would honestly trade my DS in if they do something so utterly stupid and it's not hackable within a few weeks.

Relax guys, I remember hearing it'll work fine with a normal router, but that Nintendo will also sell their own router for those that don't have one already. I don't know if the Nintendo one will be just limited to DS connectivity. And unfortunately, I can't remember the source on this. Heh.
