I just started digging into my Karate Champ machine tonight. The left player control works fine. The right one was stuck always going one direction. I popped open the CP and found not normal switches but leaf switches I guess? Anyway the right one was bent so I bent it back and of course it broke off. There are two little pieces of metal and one broke. Will it still work okay with one?

Also, the monitor draws blue slowly. In other words, when it goes to a new screen, the blue is "off" and then in a second or two the blue slowly creeps back into its proper place. Is that something a cap kit would fix, or is that a symptom of something else? I'm such a monitor newbie.

Eventually I'll probably have to replace the CPO as well. How does one remove an old, original CPO?

That's three completely different questions. Let's see where this thread takes us. :)

Not sure I follow you here. On the leaf switch sticks, the two pieces of metal per direction touch when the switch is closed to tell the computer to move the guy (or kick or whatever). Is that the metal piece you mean? Or a different piece? (Have pics handy perchance? :) )

Sounds like a possible convergence issue? If it is, that's on the tougher end of the, er, spectrum, dealing with the yoke and whatnot. :) But I'd still replace all the caps first and see if that takes care of the problem. Just make sure to discharge the monitor first and be extremely careful!!

Undo all the sticks, buttons, bolts / screws, then peel it off. Whatever's left behind, use your favorite combo of elbow grease and goo gone. :)

Maybe it's not a leaf switch? On all the switches the pieces of metal seem to be stuck together, and when you move the joystick it moves the metal "tabs" (?) and the player moves on screen. The one that's broken is still working. I'll try and get a picture of it this evening.

I've never capped a monitor but I guess this is as good of a machine as any to learn on.

The cabinet appears to have originally been a Dig Dig cab, painted over a few dozen times, so the CPO is the least of this thing's cosmetic issues and will probably be a long way down the list of repairs. Fortunately the marquee and bezel are in good to great shape, and the CPO is in good shape (it just has a couple of spots that have been picked at/peeled off).

If you wanted to restore it back to the Dig Dug art (presuming it's still underneath all the paint :) ) you could heat up the paint with a heat gun, let it cool a little bit, and peel it off. You have to be careful to heat it up just enough to bubble up the paint without scorching the original art beneath, but it works like a charm. ;)

Or you could just strip and sand it, repaint it black and add the Karate Champ side art decals. :) But that Dig Dug art is just so cool...

You probably know this, but just in case...

...MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DISCHARGE IT PROPERLY.

Flack- take a pic of the switch you're talking about. I very likely have one in the parts bin, if so consider it yours.

Cool, maybe we can meet up during OVGE if I can make it up there. I guess I am going to have to remove the control panel to do further work and take more pictures. Right now I have it flipped open but it's still kind of a mess in there and tough to reach certain parts.
