I told my Game Design teacher that I was a collector, and today he hooked me up w/ a boxed Amiga CD32. He told me he wasnt entirely sure what was IN the box besides the system itself, though...so when I brought it home tonight and opened it up I was met with a few surprises:

- No controllers, cables or games. I can live with this for the time being, as he may know where some other stuff for it is. It did come with an a/c adapter, but it's definitely for something besides the system itself. I'm also uncertain which region the system is from (I've heard these are very scarce in the US, which makes me wonder if it's imported).

- It had a very large 'adapter' attached to it, the purpose which I can not determine. It attached to the back and stayed on via a bottom plate (kinda like a Sega CD 2, but not nearly as glamorous). It appears to be some sort of converter to allow for PC applications (via floppy disks, etc.), but that's really nothing more than a guess. The adapter says "Paravision SX-1" on it.

- It also came with an external 3.5" floppy drive, a 56k modem (w/ phone line) and about 2 dozen random floppy disks for what appear to be primitive programming and graphic design software. All of these appear to be in some way attachable to the aforementioned adapter.

I know next to nothing about this thing, and I'm definitely curious as to what I just got my hands on. Can anyone help me out with identifying any of this stuff?

If I'm right SX-1 was an add-on/expension for the Aiga CD32 which made it possible to use your system as a full Amiga 1200 (hey it's always had the same specs so not that strange). Sorry but I don't know so much about Amiga for the rest. I had a system years ago and when it went out of the market someone bought it to make it a Amiga 1200 with an expension he found. I'm only not sure what the difference was between the SX-1 and SX-32. Check a bit around in the Amiga scene and if you also can play normal Amiga 1200 games you have a great system.

Here's the SX-1: http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=276

As sharp already mentioned, the SX-1 adds ports to the CD32 the A1200 has, plus you can hook an external floppy drive up to it as well as a 2.5" IDE harddisk internally to use regular Amiga software with the CD32. If you've got everything hooked up, you'll need a special PSU anyway though, because the regular CD32 one is too weak.

This sounds exactly like my story about getting a boxed CD32 for free, except I wrote a kid's Art class final for him. Came with no controllers, all that, but came with the SX-1.

I'm still looking for controllers. :/

Controllers are actually on ebay (even new ones) quite a bit. I've been trying to buy one of these for a few months now, but definitely hard to find in the range I'm looking.

The system was somewhat successful in the UK, but totally bombed in the US. That's awesome that you got it for free =)

If you find out more about the attachments I'd love to know as I only know the system due to a few games (and not it's full capabilities). I'll have to check out those URLs listed above.

Go to CD³² Tuning, all hardware expansions for the CD32 are listed there with lots of pics, only in German though. If you want more info on a specific piece of HW, just ask :)
