Mine would have to be Luigi for his powerful jumps.

I've always been a Luigi man for the same reason. I like that extended, arcing jump. I don't like the princess's jump because of the hovering. It's harder to predict where she will land if you hold the jump button down.

If you don't say Luigi you aren't judging on gameplay. His jumps are by far the most advantageous thing in SMB2.

toss up between peach and luigi.... both are useful at different times in the game

I found Luigi's jumps kinda hard to controll.
I played Toad untill I found a board with hard jumps, then I took Princess. She can "jump" the farthest.

Really? I feel the same way except substitute Peach for Luigi. I always found that the way Luigi jumped made it harder to control where he landed, while Peach's hovering made her go far and let me put her where I wanted her.

I have always prefered Peach's floating to Luigi's "seizure" jumps.

Princess by far, followed by Mario. Luigi is too hard to control, and Toad jumps like an old man.

Toad! He's the fastest and the strongest. So he digs the fastest and he can grab the most coins for the slot game.

I always played through as Mario.
To be honest, the only version of SMB2 that I ever played all the way through is the GBA version (SMBA1), which I understand is a tad harder than the others (am I right about that?)
I actually found Mario's complete LACK of special abilities to aid in my gameplay, he didn't do anything unpredictable or out of balance....I wasn't sacrificing too much in any one area to be able to do anything else.
Mario is the only character I ever beat every single level with.

1. Luigi was the biggest highlight of this game imho
2. Toad, fast and strong
3. Princess, Floating ability always came in handy
4. Mario, just too average during this one

The first chance we get to select our own character in a 'Mario' game, and everyone up and abandons the title character!
One more vote for Toad, or as we oldschoolers know him: the mighty MUSHROOM RETAINER!

Luigi was the bomb in this game. With him you could beat the game in 10-15 minutes tops.
He had the best jump, decent pulling ability and good speed. He was clearly the best character.

Luigi with Peach a close 2nd depending on the level.

Princess, loved that hover! Also, being about 7 at the time and a girl, SMB2 was the first time I can recall being able to play as a female character, I almost always used the princess except for the level in which you had to jump up to the top of the screen quickly while the masks were chasing you. For that part I always found it easier to use Luigi.

Peach, with Luigi a close second. The floaty ability of Peach is very handy in the game

I suck with anyone but peach. I love her gliding skill, I cant beat the game without it.Actually I couldnt beat the game at all before it was released on the Advance; I need to be able to save dammit!
I love Mario Bros. 2 , even though its not really a mario game at heart

i'm one of the few (surprisingly) who uses mario. luigi feels like i'm controlling a falling leaf or something, toad is kinda underpowered, and i only use peach for getting to secret areas (mostly the one in 1-1.)

I too find Luigi's jumps a little too hard to control. When Peach jumps, at least she stays on the same horizontal plane until she starts to fall.
I chose Toad, though, because the ability to snap-pull in a flash is really useful.

Exactly. Advantageous in the battle against Wart since he picks stuff up quicker.
Princess is good to use in levels where there a lot of gap jumps. Luigi is good in a couple of levels, and is almost necessary in at least one that I know of.

Peach all the way on this one.
Mario and Toad don't seem to have anything to offer, but Luigi is not bad.
When I play with Peach, I can beat the game in 10 minutes.

Luigi, because he's easiest to double-jump with. Also, I find I can jump up vines/ladders easier with him than the others.

Add another Mario user to the list. I did use Toad a lot too (after I beat the game with Mario though). I didn't like Luigi at all, and I only used Peach on that level where you start and have to jump to the left onto the island (I think so anyway; I'm a bit fuzzy on details).
I LOOOOVE SMB2. It's the only Mario game I have ever beaten.
EVER.

It's kind of humorous to know that Mario is the least appreciated, yet he's featured on the box cover. :)
If only Nintendo had made him more unique from the others instead of making him the most "blah" of the bunch....

If I remember correctly, I always used Princess Toadstool and Luigi the most, with Toadstool having a slight lead in number of uses. After that would be Toad, and Mario I barely used (usually only on the first stage just for the heck of it).
Toad is probably the character I enjoy using the most, though. I love digging through sand super fast with him, and he's the best for pulling up coins in the bonus stages.
I've never played through the entire game straight with any one character. I would switch a lot, choosing whoever I thought best suited the stage. One of these days I really should replay the game 4 times, once with each character. That would be an interesting challenge for myself (though I'm sure I'd still find it easy). I bet there are some stages that I've NEVER used certain characters in.

Princess, all the way. I almost never used the other characters as a kid. That float power saved me countless times. I've tried using the other characters, and I'll admit they're better for certain levels, but man, does that float ever kick ass. :D

I always used Luigi when I first got the game. Eventually I managed to master the whole game to the point where I felt like I was ignoring the other characters.
Here's something fun to do - I used to do this all the time. There are a total of twenty stages in the game. Have each character finish five stages, and at the end of the game, all four characters share the honors! It really forces you to pick your characters more wisely, and become a little more versatile with your playstyle. Give it a shot!

I have to go Luigi all the way, there are so many areas and stages that you can skip half or most of the level with Luigi and some warps that can only be reached with him.
Definitely Toad! I'm all about the speed. I might use Peach on the waterfalls if I get really stuck and can't get past it with toad.
