Having spent several evenings this week setting up my Doctor V64jr after a lengthy period of hibernation, I have been reminded as to what prompted me to finally purchase a GameCube. And I wanted to share :)

My Friend Andy purchased his GameCube shortly after release, complete with Super Smash Bros. Melee. His love affair with the game left me feeling rather obligated to give its predecessor a whirl. I was hooked.

Almost immediately after, I ordered my GameCube.

So, what games on older consoles persuaded you to invest in newer-generation technology?

Well, Resident Evil 4 prompted me to buy a GC.

Back in 1997, I still had a Genesis. I bought NHL 97 because I wanted a hockey game to play. Long story short, I ended up buying a Playstation along with NHL 97 for it. I returned NHL 97 for Genny to Kay-Bee. So that's what got me started on Playstation. Soon after, I got FFVII and I was hooked for good.

Up until a year ago, I wanted nothing to do w/ an Xbox. It seemed far too evil to be worth my time a/o money. But then Ninja Gaiden came out, the Cube started losing various third parties, and somehow because of that (and other random things as well, I'm sure) I caved in and finally got one. Now it's one of my favorite systems...go figure. Damn you evil empire!

Well, I bought the Xbox and the Gamecube simply for the fact that they were new consoles that I had to own.

PS2, I waited until Metal Gear Solid 2 and Grand Theft Auto 3.

I had never even concidered buying one of the new consoles,I was satisfied with my N64. I started playing my NES religiously , and all those fond memories from my childhood prompted me to get a Cube.

My genesis and 32x combo. I saw pictures of the new games that were going to be released on the playstation. Trying to play the genny was tough afterwards, having seen images of "true" 3d gaming that was going to be on the playstation. So I traded my genny, 32x and all the games in on a playstation, got 100 bucks credit for it. I still have that ps1 today, granted its in rough shape and on its 3rd laser.

When Square left Nintendo, I opted for a PS2 over a GC just for Final Fantasy IX (never had a PS1). Was it worth it? Of course. Was the letdown of FFX made much more painful by the majesty of IX? You betcha.

Oh yeah, and the whole DVD player thing had a bgi part to do with me buying a new system. I jumped from the N64 right to the PS2-no Dreamcast, PS1, etc.

this is a pretty easy answer for me.

i was looking into buying a current generation system, evaluating my options, looking over each systems capabilities, specs, etc. everything i saw didn't matter once i found out that there was a new metroid game for the gamecube. super metroid owned my life, and metroid prime continued that trend. nuff said.

now why the hell can't i get into metroid prime 2? hrm.

I usualy buy all new systems, but the only system I can relate to for this is the DS, becuase of my love for the n64 version of the game that made me definitly want the DS. Without that game there was no way I would buy at launch.

Jump ship wha? :? If it's a new videogame console I'm pretty much 80% there! :D (with some exceptions like when the Neo Geo or the 3DO came out, etc.)

Ridge Racer V on PS2. I was living in Japan and I had to talk my wife into buying me one on ebay. It was the launch christmas and eBay was my only hope of getting one. She bought me a PS2 with Ridge Racer V for a little over $500. Im still playing that same PS2.

Heh, deputy, I see someone answered your question about that chick in your sig. I was gonna PM you and do it, lol.

Anyway:

Mario 64 is why I had to buy a cube and Mario Sunshine on the day of that game's release. Too bad Sunshine wasn't quite as good, but it was still a helluva thing.

Super Mario Kart sealed the deal for my GameCube purchase. My sister and I really enjoyed the game, so I bought it since she seemed to have fun playing Double Dash.

The right price.

Cube I got on ebay, used but nice, with PSO, for...I'm not sure but it was no more than 150-175, and this was when cubes were still like 200.

Xbox I got with the sega GT/ JSRF bundle, this was what, like 200 bucks, with JSRF which I played the hell out of. I got it after xmas with the money I made off relatives if I remember right (that or with birthday cash before, since my birthday is close to decemeber).

PS2 I got for free from my girlfriend's brother, since he's had it since launch, it was broken, and his soon-to-be-wife brought a ps2 home with her. I have since fixed it and given it fliptop/boot discs so I can play JP games.

Dreamcast I got for my birthday...previous to that all I had was an n64, no psx or saturn(damnit) for me, so it was "time" for some more variety.

N64 was xmas, pretty much the same thing there, I'd had my genny and snes for a few years and had beat down all the games I'd managed to get for it, time for the next thing...

The only time I can think of wanting a system just for a GAME would be the 32x for Chaotix. I blew pretty much all my birthday money on that one year, and didn't regret it either. My 32x still works to this day, but unfortunetly someone must have stole my chaotix cart, sicne i haven't seen it for several years, and I know I wouldn't have given that baby up for anything. I probably wanted a genesis for sonic 2 at the time, since that's when I got mine, but I'm not sure since it's been ages. I was happy to have the genesis itself though so maybe not...

Far as I can remember I was born with an atari 2600 jr. Pretty sure NES was already out, or out about as soon as I was going to relatives' houses and being capable of remembering it. I reemmber a cousin showing me castlevanian and zelda II. I also reemmber someone showing me final fantasy, but i might have had my system by then, just hadn't seen the game. I can't remember a game making me want an NES either, just the whole, "oh, those are cool, i'd like to get in on that". So maybe it was a few games that did it.

I bought the PS2 on launch day.

I bought an Xbox for the emulators.

I bought my Gamecube because (a) it was on sale on Black Friday and (b) for the Star Wars games.

I always wait untill 5 or more games I would want are released for a system before I think of getting it. It hasnt always been the case as I used to buy games simply on the merits of what I knew was planed for release. As so many games would either let down my expectations (or not be released) I decided to not continue doing so. There are no franchise's that are enough to make me want to pick up any system these days.

ps1 for twisted metal & sports games (over genesis).

I bought ps2 for Tekken 5. I actually did it once I learned that San Andreas wouldn't be released for xbox until much later.

xbox for emulation.
dreamcast for emulation.
saturn for virtua cop 2
another saturn to mod and play jap saturn games

I own 2 gamecubes and still don't know why since I never play either of them. I'll find a game I like for this system sooner or later.

What sold me to get a GameCube was Eternal Darkness... and the fact it was Nintendo. Never owned any Sony systems until now i just started to get into the DC and TG16

I was on a PS2. Being a long time Gran Turismo fan, I peed my pants in anticipation of what would be the greatest racing game in history......Gran Turismo 4.

What a pile of shit THAT turned out to be. Polyphony seems to have trouble with decent AI. I dumped my PS2 and 60 games in disgust. I already had a Cube.....and Xbox was getting Forza, so I grabbed one. Forza has what I had hoped Turismo's AI to be.

I've had my Xbox for a few months now and have not only bought, but COMPLETED several of the latest games. Xbox games seem to be more interesting and keep me compelled to finish them. And that means less wasted cash. :D

I was always a sega fan-boy and after they left the console market, Nintendo seemed like the lesser of three evils

Classic gamers don't jump/abandon ship! We just find more consoles to share our time with!

But for me, it was the announcement of the GC/GBP package deal. I bought mine within a week (or so) of the announcement. Sure, now you can buy it for the same price, but at the time it was just like getting a free GBP.

I bought a Gamecube because I'm a sucker for Shigeru Miyamoto games. :embarrassed:

I went straight from SNES to PS2. The PS2 was appealing to me because of its backwards compatibility. I could stay up to date with the latest games and check out the PlayStation games I missed out on.

I got a Gamecube for the Zelda Collector's Edition. The only thing holding me back was that I thought there were only going to be 5-10 games I wanted, and only the exclusive ones, but in February 2004 I got a big check and figured what the hell. Also, one of my friends owned a Cube and eventually got me into the console. Now I own over 50 GCN games.

I buy new consoles as soon as I can afford them, as long as they show promise and have a few good games. The only thing that's come out recently I wouldn't buy, at least unless it was very cheap, has been the N-Gage.

Probably, the PS2's backwards compatibility (so I could play Dragon Warrior VII on it) and the fact that Dragon Warrior VIII would be coming out for is what inspired me to get it instead of an X-Box (can you guess what series I'm a fanboy of?)

I had already decided I wanted a current gen console (well, I had a GBA SP, but for home consoles, the last one I had gotten was a NES). I can't remember what made me want to get a current gen console.
