How much should a modded playstation one cost?

I have a PS1 that I am going to put on ebay in the next few days. The nice thing about it is that it has the old Parallel I/O port on the back. With this connection you can get a simple game shark like device that requires no modding of the PS1. It just plugs into the back, you put the included spring under the cover and it works perfectly as moded system. You do have to start out with a swap method, but I have had no problem with any back up CDR's or import games.

I use this device on my PS1 now, so I will look tonight and get the name of the device. I am not going to be selling the device with the PS1 that I am putting on eBay because of ebay's rules on modded systems, but I will be sure to post the link to the auction when I list the system.

This is the easiest way to play backups and imports on a PS1, but the tricky part is finding a PS1 unit that has the Parallel I/O port. Sony removed this port soon after the release because people were using it to play backups.

Theres a swap trick that can be used on www.gamefaqs.com just check the hardware guide for the playstation 1.

I personally recommend a modchip, on the old fat ps1 it will be pretty cheap and easy to mod (only 4 wires to solder) otherwise try the I/O port trick as rpepper9 suggested.

I paid about $70 for a modded PSone (revised form factor) unit about three years ago. I don't know if prices have (or should have) fallen since then, however.

Umm, buy a used ps0ne for 20 bucks and buy the modchip for 5-10 bucks. Its 4 wires on the new model ps1, I have little if any soldering skills and I was able to do it. Jandaman.com has chips avalible.

About a year ago i bought my modded psone for $70 including 40 copied games and 10 originals,2 joysticks and 2 memory cards.

Add on an extra $20-30 for the playstation mod chip installed from whatever you would regularly pay. I paid ~$80 for a PsOne (small) with the Sony LCD + carrying case & car adapter on eBay earlier this year (January?)

I would get the PsOne and not the original. Like someone said above the chip is cheap now and easy to install. Someone who knows what they're doing can open the system up and have it closed and modded witin 5-10 minutes.

I got a refurbished old-style model for $30. Unfortunately I can't remember which site I got it from. :/

Damn shame too since they tossed in a bunch of extra stuff like a multitap and a 256 meg memory card. :(

A couple years ago I found a clear cased PSX with the Game HUnter attached in the I/O port for about $30. It works great, only way for me to play my Thrill Kill.

I bought a modded older PS1, not the newer PSOne, at an non-Ebay auction site this past summer for $29 plus $8 shipping. I assumed it wasn't on Ebay because of Ebay rules. VERY nice clean console with all the cords and one controller. I was thrilled to find it and quite suprised there were no other bidders, perhaps because the seller had no previous feedback. No switches to it - just stick the game in it and play. I don't have any PAL Playstation games to check it with, so I don't know about that aspect of it.

The sellers just say special or upgraded system and to e-mail them about the capabilities of it.

PAL games should work fine. It's your tv you have to worry about. ;)

Not nesscecarily Kristine, some must have a region fix on the underside of the board (lil wire - 2 points to solder) also your tv should take PAL since my 5 year old TV takes 60hz and NTSC- U and NTSC-J signals so you should have no problem.

I got a normal PS one and got it modded later. It was in the days before PS2 so the price will have changed. But maybe it's still interesting for somebody. I've payed about 40$ for the modding and I never had any problems with the system.

Hrm..... With the costs of PS's not being too huge i'd not expect to see much more than 50 charged for one. However I like to go the legit route personally and just buy those lockout free Debugs. They just tend to cost a little bit more. ;)

See, I went out to the local flea market late in the day (about 12:30) and didn't see anything worth picking up, however I did come across a PlayStation in the trash pile. It's one of the older versions with the RCA jacks in the back and aside from being dirty the only problem it seemed to have was the tab that holds the lid closed was broken off, no big deal for free.

So I get it home and disassemble it so the shell could be properly cleaned and I notice that there's a piece of double stick tape on the bottom of the mainboard with one side still covered (to cushion), carefully removed it and - well look at that, it's a mod chip. Man did that bring back memories of high school. Also the power socket had been cut down to accept normal power cords as opposed to only accepting the ones with the top and bottom indents. After getting it cleaned and back together (even though on the first try I forgot to reconnect the wire loom from the power board to the mainboard and had to open it up and plug it in) it runs perfectly.

It did have the "turn it upside down" read problem at first but I know a little fix for that, just posted a picture on another thread in fact...

If you affix a piece of SMOOTH foam (like what motherboards come wrapped in sometimes) beneath the path of the read laser carriage it lifts the whole assembly up enough to read the disc properly, and since the foam is nice and slick the carriage doesn't get tripped up in it.

Either way it was a freaking nice find and "meant to be" since I was going to pick up a modded PlayStation in an eBay auction that ended the day before - but the ending price of $60 was just too much.

What's funny is some idiot had the PlayStation in his hand and his mom or whatever was like "yeah, maybe you can open it and it'll only need a wire replaced" so I moved on. On the way back out I noticed he had left it behind in the trash. :D

I got mine for €25 on ebay iirc, and I didn't know it was modded because it wasn't mentioned in the auction text at all, nice surprise :D

I got mine from www.chipzone.com . I really liked it, it was a pre-modded PSOne, and they used the newest chip. The ones that you plug in the back (in the i/o port) work, but a lot of games can detect it (Medievil 2, for instance) and stop working. The "stealth" mods get around this, and I don't think there are any stealth plug-mods.

Anyway, it was a new PSOne, it came with all of it's parts, and it plays great. I think it was slightly under $100, but it might be cheaper now.

If you haven't bought it yet, inquire as to which version it is.

The later PSX models tend to have more reliable lasers. However the last series (9000) don't have that accessory port that was mentioned earlier.

Price seems to be fine. Also depends if you get some accessories w/ it. If you've got a source for your backup games then it doesn't matter if it comes w/ any. But if you don't, then you might want to find out how many it comes with.

People will still probably charge you $15-20 to do the mod if you brought them a system, so this seems to be a fair price.

Same here. I got mine modded in 97, but cost me 60 bucks. I never had a problem with it.
