On the heels of official confirmation of the XBox 360 coming out at the end of this year and speculation on Sony's PS3 coming out next year, Nintendo has released a little more info:

Confirmed here too...and here's the real highlights
1. It CAN play DVD movies
2. It IS backwards compatible with GameCube disc
3. It's Nintendo's SMALLEST system to date! will be about the thickness of three standard DVD cases and only slightly longer." This would make it the Japanese game giant's smallest console to date, as well as making it barely larger than Sony's new slimline PS2, which is about two times as thick and about an inch-and-a-half longer than a DVD case.
4. Revolution will be "wireless Internet ready out of the box"
Now that's what I like...

I pulled this off another site, so as always, treat it for what it's worth. This discussion involved someone who claimed to be working for a software developer contracted out by Sega. He didn't give away too much, really, and sounded fairly credible. "Credible," of course, by the standards of the internets.
Anyway, read on:
Now on to the goods for what are the “supposed” facts. In his personal opinion, what makes the Nintendo Revolution deserving of its’ name are a combination of all the new gameplay features that are being added. Some of these we have heard before. Here we go…
- Gyroscopic control
Retro is working on an all new FPS IP that he claims will be Nintendo’s “Halo Killer”. It will utilize this gyration feature to the fullest for aiming to create a new experience.
- Controller handles contain pressure sensative ball grips.
The amount of pressure applied determines the change in gameplay. He says NST is working on a brand new Wave Race for the NRev launch and it’ll utilize this feature. The tighter the grip, the faster your jetski will go. He also wanted to add that the water effects are phenominal, the most realistic water he’s ever seen in a video game to date.
- Advanced voice recognition.
He said think “Nintendogs” but far more advanced. He said his company is working on a game to utilize this feature…the NRev dev kit has been giving out a wireless mic headset that looks similar to Xbox Live. Examples he gave were calling audibles in a new Madden game or organizing and giving squad based commands in a next-gen Rainbow Six.
- Online Gaming Network.
Free. Yes he claims it will be free. Believe it or not, he believes Nintendo has the best online network being setup…better than what Sony and even Microsoft is doing. But it won’t be just for games. Nintendo is commited to bringing gamers together and offer new forms of communication. You can even surf message boards and chat with your fellow gamers. He believes things like IGN forums won’t even be needed anymore. Gyration will also aid in the surfing ability. The ability to download works of progress and previews of future games will be available. You’ll even be able to download demo’s for the DS…NRev and DS can communicate thru their wi-fi. Nintendo is already experimenting with the downloadable DS promos in Japan. The NRev and a broadband connection will make this available for everyone soon.
- Wireless controllers.
By default, the controllers will be wireless like the wavebird. Nothing has been mentioned about rumble feedback or if it will recharge lithium-ion style yet.
There are supposedly two features on the console that are "revolutionary," one involving the controller and the other involving the system itself. Supposedly this new innovation isn't even a new technology, but a logical extension of something we already have. I'm thinking it's Hamburger Earmuffs.

I hope it doesn't turn out like the GC. No offense to any of it's fans, but that system was a let down to me. :/

I wonder if the wireless capabilities will allow it to connect to the GBA's wireless adapter and / or the DS? DS seems likely...GBA maybe less so.

I just hope this new system will put Nintendo back on the map. It's looking good so far, I hope the hype and all the marketing will appeal to all gamers. Mario Kart online and hopefully a Goldeneye 007 remake that could be played online would be awesome!!!

could you please post this in EVERY nintendo related topic?
Hopefully all of these features and more will be addressed soon a E3. At least there seems to be a lot of hype around the new system, more so than other recent N systems....at least nintendo is doing something right.

The DS' wireless capabilities apparently can't connect with the GBA wireless adapter. So...it's likely that the GBA wireless will not connect to the Revolution.

I'm actually hoping that they continue to make more new and original games like they're doing with the DS. I won't purchase a new console if most of the games for it are ports and sequels of games that I've already purchased and played before.

Why does everyone keep thinking that Nintendo will release another Bond game. It's IMPOSSIBLE! It would require an act of God or Nintendo raiding the EA corporates and drawn and qaurtering the CEO with NES controller cords and Pokemon VW Beetles. It's not going to happen give it up, especially when the developer of Goldeneye is no longer owned by Nintendo.
Anyway I have great faith in Nintendo and hope the Revolution is more appreciated than the curent status of the Gamecube.

Wow. I don't even have a Gamecube.
Maybe it's just me, but I really feel as though Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are jumping the gun here with the new systems releases.
Ah well, I look forward to seeing these new systems in action. Plus, this means I get an X-Box or Gamecube (prolly both) for cheap.

I think they should give it a neo retro look based on the NES but with a platinum finish.
Like this little concept I whipped up.

Sorry I didn't make any controller concepts but I tried to make this concept a scale based on the height and length of three standard dvd cases and I made it slot loading although this design could easily accomodate a flip top lid. Of course if the revolution has wireless controllers then theres no need for controller ports but a couple usb type ports could fit in the lower black area to accomodate recharging the controllers.

Nice concept art, but it'd probably confuse the heck out of Joe Six-Pack.
"I thought they were making a new system. Why would I want this old junk?"
Maybe a LE retro version... that'd be neat. :)

This is off topic, but MS bought RARE, then did EA buy the rights for the BOND franchise from RARE or Nintendo, or what?

That's awesome man!!!!!!!!
While I would love it, I don't think it would be the best thing for Nintendo if they really wanted to. I mean for mainstream sake, I don't think too many people would want it.

Maybe you could mod the Revolution to look like that, because the the case is similar:

Based om what I read from the link it seems to be an excellent system but I would like to see one day that nintendo would develope a system that could play nes,supernes,gc,n64 all in the same console. I think this would be a good thing.

The Revolution actualy DOES play Nes,Snes,N64 and GC games.

taken from cube-europe:
Backward compatibility: The new console plays all games from the current Nintendo GameCubeTM generation. But there's more...
The secret weapon: The console also will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo® 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System® (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System® (NES).
