So the cord portion of the analog Saturn controller comes off. I just recently noticed this. However, from what I can tell, it does so for absolutely no reason.

So...why the hell is that?

This is something that has been debated among Sega fans everywhere. I noticed mine did that too. When I looked it up, no one knew. I think the designers of it were high one night and decided that the cord should be detachable. Anyways, even game magazines state that it has no purpose.

Maybe is was made like that to attach a wireless adapter to the controller... just a theory :)

Some theories are...

wireless adapter,
rumble pack expansion
giroscopic controller for nights 2
compatabilty with the Katana or Black Belt at the time of release

I remember reading that it would be for rumble support.

It was built in at Naka's request (he was the one who demanded an analog controller in the first place). They were going to use it for a Nights sequel entitled Air Nights, where the player would control Nights directly by waving about a special controller designed for the purpose.
