My Model ! SegaCD unit has a disc stuck inside of it. I tried to start playing a game, the game froze after the initial ioening screen, and now when I turn on the genesis the SegaCD just sits at it's opening screen. If I push the reset button to open the tray, the screen goes blank. I think I just need to get the damned disc out of there. Is there any way to manually open the tray???

Thanks.

Chris

I don't think so. That happened to my SegaCD back when they originally cam eout and I had to ship it to Sega to get it fixed.

OK I got the disc out, but the system is still frozen when I turn it on. I need Omnedon or FABombjoy for this...

I've never seen what you describe on a SEGACD1.

The SEGACD logo comes on? Sound too? It all freezes? More detail please!

OK I turn the system on with no game in either the genny or the scd. The screen comes up showing the earth in the background and "Version 1.10" or whatever in the upper right hand corner. Thats it. The controls dont respond, and if I hit the reset ket to open the drive, the screen goes black. I may be nuts, but I think that the drive itslef is lockled up. I have the unit in pieces right now, and the drive is here on my desk. The little pedestal connected to the motor which spins the disc is sticking up all the way, like it would be if there were a disc in the drive, My only idea is to put the drive back in the position that is supposed to be in, and maybe it will work. Other that than, I dunno.

One other thing, no lights flash on the scd unit when I turn it on.

Sounds like the laser and/or laser mechanism is screwed.

I *believe* I've seen what you're describing... but it's been awhile since I've worked on a SegaCD.

A bad CD assembly can bring down the whole console... I had one do that once. When I swapped the CD assembly with another, everything started working just fine again.

Other SegaCD v1 thoughts:

What condition is the drive belt in? Because of the small size of the belt & the nylon pulleys, the belt typically won't make any noise if it slips. If the belt is slack at all, it WILL slip when it trys to lift & lock the heavy-ass laser & controller assembly into place.

KLUDGEY TIP: If you can't find a new belt, you can slip a rubber O-ring into the motor pulley groove to take up the slack, and give it some extra grab on the belt.

In addition to the weak tray/laser motor, there are 2 limit switches, both connected to the same small PCB that the motor is mounted to, they tell the SegaCD when the tray is open & when it's closed.

The outermost switch is the "open" switch, and it's activated by a pin that clips in to the upper-right part of the tray. If that pin is missing or the contacts are iffy, the tray will open briefly, and then close again. Very annoying.

The inner switch is the "closed" switch, activated by a small nub cast into the bottom of the primary gear (that bigass, highly visible gear that moves the tray in/out and raises the laser assembly). There is a small hole in the gear that can help you get the alignment right, but it does take a bit of effort. If the belt is slack AT ALL, and the laser assembly can't fully lock into place, the closed switch will never activate and the SegaCD may get confused and do nothing, or eject the tray.

If the belt is slipping and neither limit switch gets tripped, it'll stick in a sort of confused purgatory state and may not respond to controller input. It should still reset and return to the space scene, tho.

Ok, I don't know if any of that will help, but if you've got the CD unit dissassembled, this might help to get it back in one piece.
