View Full Version : A Boy and His Blob coming to DS?

According to this page on Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/aboyandhisblob/index.html), Majesco is publishing "an action adventure game based on the classic NES game." for the DS. Hmm...
EDIT: Right after I posted this, the page went down. Odd. Also, I'm reading on another board that we'll hear more about this at E3.

I saw the blurb, if that was all there was. Nintendo seem to be reviving a few oldies at the moment on the DS. Might be time to invest in one, perhaps.

I'd like to see a new Boy and his Blob. I always thought the NES game was pretty neat.

Hmm, now that's a game that would work well on the DS.

Man...I can think of so many applications for the touch screen for this! I wonder if David Crane is developing it.
ABAHB has always been a favorite of mine...it's such an original game...

I mentioned it here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=60222) about a week ago. I still haven't been in contact with anyone at Majesco to follow up since they were prepping for E3, but it doesn look like it's a reality now. The last time I talked to anyone there about it was sometime in February when it was still in the planning stages.

Damn this looks horrible, looks like one of the wost remakes I ever saw. But with a name like Majesco it doesn't surprise me at all, as they are one of the few companies which is able to deliver us bigger trash then EA.

Wow I thought it looks great! All that matters is that is plays similar to the original, if so, I'm sold.

looks like i jinxed the game. 16 BIT GRAPHICS, NOT THAT TOY STORY REJECT MESS!
-thinks for a moment-
i think konami should buy the liscense and make a silent hill-esque version of that. "YOU HAVE TO FEED THE BLOB TO ESCAPE, BUT WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE!?"

Is that a compliment or criticism? Flash can do cartoonish graphics pretty well. Obviously this game wasn't designed to look photo realistic.

Thanks, mommy but we don't share an opinion.
The blob isn't even the same color...he should be a "white blob"...without the "white" youve just changed 50% of him.
I've been wanting a new ABAHB for a very long time so I'm going to try it out but my opinion stands...it looks like CRAP.

I think we should wait to see what the final product plays like before we drop all this negativity on it.
A Boy and His Blob for NES was a wonderful successor to Crane's classic Pitfall. If this game can capture the same game play with an updated graphic scheme, it will be another winner. Curious to know if David has any input on the game, considering the original game was officially titled "David Crane's A Boy and His Blob."

bleh, i just dislike the kind of graphics used. i wouldn't have minded simplistic ones, but these are just rather stale. i'll see how it looks in motion though.
and what the hell is with the kid wearing a backwards cap? is it still 1993?

That's exactly how I felt when I saw it. How ugly the graphics were didn't even occur to me until everybody else pointed it out. Actually, I kind of like the whole nighttime/streetlight thing they've got going on. That's similar to the original, at least.

Intriguing. I find the style rather off-putting at first glance, but I think it could look really good once we see it in motion. Either way, it's nice to see one of the more obscure classic nes titles getting some attention. Especially if they include the original as an unlockable bonus.

Invest? I see Nintendo and Majesco making money, and old property rights owners making money, but buying games at retail isn't something I do as an investment...hmm, unless you mean track down a copy of the original 8-bit cart?

Hey folks,
Quitcher bitchin--as great as the first game was, its graphics sucked zonkey nads. It was all about the gameplay. I'm gonna wait and see what this game plays like.
BTW, the boy looked like Pitfall Harry in the original. That he looks different now should be no surprise.
Also, maybe it's not the same Blob or Boy, hence the differences.

I think it looks quite interesting, and it's nice to see an obscure game get revived like that. I wonder how it will utilize the touch screen, other than jellybean management? I'd like to see a "Sculpt your own blob" feature done with it, but I'm not sure if that's actually feasible. :/
Oh, and to those who claim Majesco is a crappy company: Have you played Psychonauts (easily my current vote for game of the year), Raze's Hell, or Iridion 2? No? Then don't talk.
Majesco is great company that doesn't seem to be afraid to try and release new and interesting games, which, in this day and age, is nothing short of commendable. Hell, they're even making a new vertical shooter for DS called Nanostray. How many other companies nowadays would even think of doing such a thing? Give them a little respect.

Hmmm...I didn't know Majesco was doing Nanostray. It looks great! I'm gonna keep an eye on the Blob. The NES game just screams "the Lost Caverns", so hopefully this will do the same.

Every game you mentioned was published by Majesco, not developed by them. Yes, they will take publishing gambles since they pay little (if any) of the development cost, but they're poor internally developed games are what they are remembered by.
Majesco's main in house portable development team is Pipe Dream Interactive, and they have turned out nothing but SNES ports for GBA (Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Earthworm Jim) and crap (F-18 Thunder Strike, Fortress). They changed the name from Pipe Dream about a year ago (the new name escapes me), but that's the team working on A Boy and His Blob.

I had a chance to play the current build yesterday and things don't look too good. The game is supposed to be finished over the next four weeks and there's absolutely no play mechanics in place and the existing level designs are sad at best. I was told that there's a lot of pressure to have the project scrapped, so if this does get canned you can rest easy knowing you're not missing anything.

That's really unfortunate. At least there's a plethora of other cool-looking DS titles to look forward to.

But so long as the game still kicks ass. :-P
That screens are from a very very early version.

That's the problem. The game plays like ass. There is literally nothing remotely interesting at this point. The "finished" (for lack of a better word) levels are all linear right to left, down, left to right and the only "game play" at this point is inanimate bad guys that you punch. In order for the game to ship in October (as currently planned), Skyworks has about four weeks to submit a final build to Nintendo. Pray that Majesco delays the game until next year.
Oh dearie me that's the boxart.

I really like the first game, and the GB game. If it resembles anything like these I will get it. I liked the game because it made you think all the time for the best possible solution using the resources that were available. I was surprised there was never a Super Nintendo sequel...

LOL LOL ,
I was thinking the same thing!!
I thought the game was great on the NES, a pain in the ass to find all the treasure though. I always ended up drowning half of the time I played it, but it was good fun!
I didn't think this game looked that bad, sure it wasn't going to be as good as the original but it looked good enough to give it a shot. Too bad it's cancelled though. I doubt if we'll ever see another A Boy and His Blob game because of this. :/
