No Ninja Gaiden arcade? Real cheap Tecmo. Capcom and Taito go all out, including over 20+ classics in their collections and you pull a Namco... For shame Tecmo, for shame.

No Xbox here.

I try to be a non-biased gamer as much as possible, but I detest Microsoft and refuse to buy their system.

Just got it too. I played through Final Fight and, after all these years, I still enjoy the Sega CD version the most. I miss the remix soundtrack the most and the whole washed out color issue I don't find to be THAt big of an issue anymore. By the way, any one catch the beginning of Final Fight? The pic of Jessica on the TV is now fully gone!! WHY??!!! I did notice, however, there seem to be more characters on screen to fully kick my ass now lol. I was checking a little bit of each game. In SFII, all 6 elephants are there, the girls in Vegas are back to bikinis and the warping floors look like they should :) I played both Ghouls n' Ghosts and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts and still love them...although they still frustrate me. With every game, you can expand the screens both horizontally and vertically to stratech and fit the entire screen. Not bad so far....gonna back and play some more titles....

LiquidPolicenaut, I got like a few questions for you. I could have had my copy today, but GameCrazy screwed up and it won't be in until tommorrow :(

Yet here are my questions,

Ghosts N Goblins (Full screen or window framed?)
Ghouls N Ghosts (Did they keep the original intro in tact with the title screen appearing?)
Super Ghouls N Ghosts (Full screen or window framed?)

Final Fight (Is it using the CPS1 BGM, I know it couldnt use the Sega CD remastered OST, but still curious)

Commandos 2 (aka MERCS) Did they leave in the 3 player mode?

and most of all, did you get the PS2 or Xbox verison?

And how do the sound effects sound? Do they remain true to their original?

As for the Final Fight "Jessica" missing issue, that is a bit weird...

Anyone know if there's any differences between the Xbox and PS2 versions (I'm thinking not, but maybe the Xbox version has some sort of Live content).

Also, how does the rotating in Forgotten Worlds work? This is the game I want to play most on it.

I tried picking it up today at the local Target, but they were re-doing the video game section, so most of the games were in the back :( They did have MAT3 and the Tecmo collection, but the driving games on MAT3 don't impress me much and the Tecmo disc is $30...

MegaDrive20XX

Speaking of Target and others. I noticed some GameStop and GameCrazy stores did not get their copy. I Called work, and my boss said they left a notice in shipment box this morning, saying "Anything not included in this shipment will arrive tommorrow" Which I thought was kind of piss poor of them :(

Same thing happened here with me. My Gamestop didn't get it in, but somehow my EBGames did and, although, I loathe that store since I used to work there, I braved the idiot EB staff just for the game :) Ok, let's see which questions i can answer so far:

Ghosts N Goblins (Full screen or window framed?) Framed

Ghouls N Ghosts (Did they keep the original intro in tact with the title screen appearing?)
Hmm, the intro tthey have starts off in black and white and shows Arthur and the princess with hearts flating up from them..aww...then back to color and villagers running and screaming and you on horseback and then it fades into the Ghouls n' Ghosts title screen...is this the original? It hurts me to know I used to have this game too back when I first had my Genny and it's been so long that I forgot the original opening :(

Super Ghouls N Ghosts (Full screen or window framed?)
Framed...but ever so slightly that its almost NOT framed

Final Fight (Is it using the CPS1 BGM, I know it couldnt use the Sega CD remastered OST, but still curious)
It has the original CPS1 BGM, which is also what I figured they would have. Still, would've been nice to have the remix from the Sega CD. After you beat the game, I was hoping that under the "music" option, maybe the option for the remix would be there, but only the original soundtrack is under there. After all this time, I now enjoy the Sega CD version more...hmmm.

Commandos 2 (aka MERCS) Did they leave in the 3 player mode?
3 Player co-op?? Yes indeed! They also give you 2 different ways to set up the screen, though neither allows for the actiion to be full screen

and most of all, did you get the PS2 or Xbox verison?
PS2 version

And how do the sound effects sound? Do they remain true to their original?
I'd have to say mostly, yeah. Final Fight sounded pretty much the same, even finally including the infamous "Oh, my God" car-wrecking line. The music in G n' G and Super G n' G brought tears to my eyes...not for being bad, but remembering how nice it still is :)

One main thing that's really bothering me is Final Fight. I don't know if it's my copy or what, but there is some horrendous little black flickers all over the place on the screen. Annoying it is.......

P.S.- Forgot to mention something. At the main page, there are 2 trailers for Capcom games. One trailer is for Capcom Classics for the PSP! Just seeing that shot of Strider made me happy :)

Perfect, Ghouls N Ghosts has finally been restored, the "Capcom Generations Vol. 2" kind of screwed up the intro, but the Super GFX16 verison was top notch. Yet now this sounds like icing on the cake.

However, I'm glad they left Ghosts N Goblins as it was. As for Super GnG, I gotta see how they did that...because I have a strange suspicious that it could be the same way they did it in Capcom Generations Vol. 2

As for the trailers, what was the other Trailer for? Kind of upsets me that Strider was left out :(

i still don't understand why Jessica was removed from the intro. it wasn't like she was wearing something out of DOA: XBV.

on a positive note, if you get all the extras on FF, you get to read up on the transexual thing. poison is a guy, and roxy is a girl. heh.

klausien
09-29-2005, 03:02 PM
The strangest thing about Final Fight is that they removed Jessica from the intro, but you can see up Poison & Roxy's shirts when you grab them like in the Japanese original. Weird. Probably more for the fact that she is a bound hostage than anything else. Don't want anyone to know the truth about violent kidnappings in the good ole US of A now do we. Ridiculous.

It is nice to have a near perfect Final Fight though. The music may be better in the Sega CD version (I am personally nostalgic for the included CPS1 music but an option would have been cool) and any censorship sucks (especially considering the game is so old), but the fact that you get surrounded by a gang of enemies like in the arcade more than makes up for it. Worth the cost of admission alone.

Forgotten Worlds plays pretty well with the two stick setup, especially if you roll the right stick around NiGHTS-style. MUCH better than any of the other workarounds that have been used over the years. Another reason to own this.

I have the XBox version and have not noticed any anomalies with transparencies as of yet, but I have a pretty lame TV and have only given the game a quick test. It is 27" and flicker should be obvious though, so they may be a problem for the PS2 version only. I wouldn't doubt it. The only arcade comp that is truly cooler on PS2 is Atari Anthology anyway. The ability to turn off the flicker completely is very cool.

Anyway, this is worth the money and I am definitely looking forward to vol. 2, IF it happens.

As a final note, I have to say that even though MAME and the like have been available for some time, finally getting almost perfect versions of these games on console in the US is a dream come true. I feel almost the same way about gamepad gaming on my computer as I do about watching movies with it. Not my thing. I have been hoping for compilations like we have been getting lately (MAT3 is also totally fantastic) since these games came out originally. Tecmo Classic Arcade is a bit of a rip-off at $30 though in light of what else is out there.

Great, I'm going nuts, my local GameCrazy did not get the game in still. I even reserved it, that's the stupid part. Everyone has easily gotten it, except me.

Imho, I think GameCrazy is doing this on purpose, they released all the mainstream crap like "Total Overdose" and "Far Cry" yet no Capcom Classics? I smell something rotten. Yet this isn't the first time something like this has happened.

I feel the company won't release games in a timely manner, unless they feel it will make profit for them.

Yet, could be a distributor problem that only certain stores get them or what not.

I got mine at EB Games last night for Xbox. Probably the first full-priced game I bought in six months, but it seems worth it. Unfortunately, there were only 2 copies for the Xbox and the guy at the counter had gutted both of them.

I tried Street Fighter II: Champ. Ed., Forgotten Worlds, 1942, Bionic Commando and Final Fight, and they played pretty well. I was tired after a long workday, so maybe I'll do some more this weekend...

XYXZYZ
09-29-2005, 06:26 PM
Let me guess- you can't play 1943 etc. in tate mode.

I've also read about disturbing little inaccuracies in the SF2 games (Xbox version) like abnormally long load times, and sound innacuracies. Izzat true?

Why, why WHY is Magic Sword not there? Area 88/UN Squadron and Willow I can understand (Licensing) but the lack of Magic Sword is a solid bummer.

By the way, how does it handle credits? Do they give you a certain ammount, or is it all free play?

I can't say for the X-Box but the load times are pretty quick for the PS2, and the sound is kinda "twangy" at times.

What's people think of the music remixes for some of them games also?

Damn, trying to get a 100% attack rate in 1943 is a pain in the ass...

Neil Koch

There is a second or two of loading before and after each match in the SF games. It's kind of annoying but not horrible, though I think Capcom could have just put one SF game and put in something like Strider.

Overall, though, this is one of the best old-school discs I've played -- worth it just for Forgotten Worlds and Final Fight for me...

How do you unlock/play with remixes?

Streetball 21
09-30-2005, 12:49 AM
Yup, I too was expecting Magic Sword to be in this game. Also maybe Knight of the Round, but hopefully next collection. For me, Final Fight and Gun.Smoke was worth the $20.00.

Also the unlockable content like cast of characters, tips and music is cool too. Good job Capcom!!!

Got called in to work today, so I scored a copy for PS2. Some thoughts:

-Image 1 in the Bionic Commando gallery? It's a re-touched version of the Famicom Hitler no Fukkatsu artwork. How so, you ask? Remove the hat, glasses, and beard, and you have Hitler.

-Most of the Section Z art is distinctly from the NES version.

-Home console version=then-current Nintendo system.

Another quick note about Final Fight. It is near 100% accurate. The US version of the arcade game had no Jessica in the intro, so it is correct. The Japanese version does. The home versions, SNES & Sega CD also have her, but she is not in just a bra like in the Nippon version.

PSP getting Magic Sword? That sucks ass...I'm getting tired of the PSP getting better upgrades then the consoles. Just like Namco Museum Battle.

We know there will be a volume 2 for sure. I still want stuff like this:

Dungeons & Dragons (part 1 and 2)
Knights of the Round
King of Dragons
Strider
Black Tiger
Magic Sword

Strider
Black Tiger

PSP version is getting those two also (and another lost favorite of mine, Speed Rumbler). Black Tiger was one of my all time favorite games growing up, so I'll be picking that one up on release date. They could end up on the PS2 vol. 2, which would be fine by me!

I picked it up today and I'm actually a little disappointed with it. I loved the idea of getting the SF2 games, but this port of them is so wrong... the striking sound effects are new sounds with some kind of echo effect, the music just cuts off when a round ends (it's supposed to fade out) and... can you select the alternate color in CE and HF? Pressing start or select brings up a menu. I'm sure I'd find out how to in the manual... I'll do it later. So, I just didn't like the SF2 ports.

And the lack of tate mode for the vertical games is a big turn off, I don't like playing them in squish screen. It'd have been interesting to see them reprogram the games to be horozontally oriented like they did with the old NES ports, don't you think? Looks like I'll have to get Capcom Generations 1 for the Saturn after all.

The other horizontal games are great though, this is the best port of Final Fight available. Another thing I really like about this collection is the ability to toggle autofire; I can play 1943 and Final Fight on my pelican arcade stick without wearing my wrist out.

Another thing, what's with that "drawing in a notebook" motif for the interface? I figiured they'dve gone with an arcade motif...

So all in all, I was a little let down. I'm sure my complaints seem trivial and nitpicky... maybe I'm just spoiled by the accuracy of MAME. And you know how it is... when they mess with something so important to you (I just love CPS1 games) it's got to be just right.

Of course, if this collection had Magic Sword on it, I wouldn't even write this little review. (I'd be playing Magic Sword instead, dig it?)

I'm disappointed too in Bionic Commando, Capcom should have opted for the kickass NES port even. Legendary Wings I actually like the arcade version more then the NES port.

Only in the arcade versions of 1943 you had to 100% destroy the enemy ships right?

I only tried the SF2's a bit, but I'm disappointed as well. The first major disappointment was when I saw a "Now Loading" within the game, no matter how brief it was. Considering I'd tracked down and paid a higher than I'd like price for Street Fighter Collection 2, I was hoping for more perfect emulation. At least it looks better than SFC2 does through the component video though, none of those weird borders/edges showing up.

The other games are pretty good though, and I still figure it was worth $20 regardless.

If you guys haven't caught on, this is pretty much a disc that ripped from Capcom Generations Vol. 1 to 5 imports...then went back and added more...

SF2 games on there, are pretty much Street Fighter Collection Vol. 2 from PSX (aka Capcom Generations Vol. 5 PSX/Saturn)

So for those who can't afford all five volumes of Capcom Generations on PSX/Saturn imports..this is a nice alternative....plus you get a bag of extras like Final Fight...Forgotten Worlds...etc....

The King Of Dragons
Knights Of The Round
1941: Counter Attack
1944: The Loop Master
19XX: The War Against Destiny
U.S. Navy/Carrier Airwing
Chiki Chiki Boys
Avengers
Buster Bros.
Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness
Saturday Night Slam Masters
Street Fighter (for curiosity's sake more than anything)

I would say that games like Willow, Alien Vs. Predator, The Punisher, the Dungeons & Dragons games, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs and U.N. Squadron will be excluded due to licensing issues... although they may be able to squeeze U.N. Squadron on if they avoid the Area 88 references.

Yeah this list would be perfect for Volume 2 I'd say

"What licensing issues are you talking about?"

That it cost money to relicense things and sometimes it might not even be available.

That's what I'm hoping for, a Volume 2 that features the following (and more):

Strider
Black Tiger
Magic Sword
Sidearms
The King Of Dragons
Knights Of The Round
1941: Counter Attack
1944: The Loop Master
19XX: The War Against Destiny
U.S. Navy/Carrier Airwing
Chiki Chiki Boys
Avengers
Buster Bros.
Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness
Saturday Night Slam Masters
Street Fighter (for curiosity's sake more than anything)

I'll second that one. Even if some those titles are ont he PSP edition making a volume 2 with those and the ones missing from volume 1 on the PS2 would make up for it.

Exactly. I think other companies have the rights to AvP and The Punisher now (and maybe D&D)... probably not so with C&D, Willow and Area 88, but you never know.

Anyone know how much the PSP version will be? I'm willing to bet it's at least 39.99 just because it's a "new system". Blah.

Probably, the Namco 50th was 39.99 as well the last time I checked.

Actually three G&G games...but honestly, this was the best $20 I spent since Midway Arcade Treasures Vol. 2

I got it last week. I'm glad to say it's every bit as good as I hoped it would be. Right up there with the first Midway Arcade Treasures and Activision Anthology.
