Earlier today SEGA’s Japanese page for the upcoming Sonic Gems Collection was launched providing a host of new information about the game, all of which can finally be set in concrete thanks to it coming directly from an official source.
The site, which is laced with some beautiful new-classic styled artwork provides us with the following. The game will be released in August this year on Playstation 2 and GameCube. Finally, what everyone has been waiting for, the list of games to be included in this compilation.
Sonic the Fighters (Arcade)
Sonic CD (Sega CD)
Sonic R (Sega Saturn)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Game Gear)
Sonic Spinball (Game Gear)
Sonic and Tails 2 (Game Gear) (aka Sonic Chaos)
Sonic Drift 2 (Game Gear)
Tails Sky Patrol (Game Gear)
Tails Adventure (Game Gear)
The game will also include a gallery of high quality official artwork and some movies, however, which movies in particular is yet to be disclosed.

No Sonic Arcade? (aka Segasonic)

My biggest problem is why release the GameGear ones again? That are already on Sonic DX
I'm with Wavel...where's SegaSonic Arcade?
No Sonic Arcade? (aka Segasonic)
When i first heard the news about this that's what I thought. No Sonic 3D blast Saturn either. All I want are the arcade games damn it.
THE ONE, THE ONLY- RCM

Why don't they use the SMS versions for some of these (Sonic Spinball, Sonic 2, Sonic Chaos) since those were made for use on TVs? I guess it's because they didn't come out in the US or Japan...

I think it still is a fun package worth the money. Only I also don't get why they did not include the arcade Sonic and Chaotix. Both games are some of the less known games from the Sonic series which a lot of people would like to see. About the GG-games I don't get their choice for the GG versions, but I never played the first Sonic Collection, so I don't know, maybe they will use the MS-versions, as they are almost the same. On the other hand the GG versions use more colors I think.
Anyway I think I will buy this game just for Sonic The Fighters anyway, now hoping they include some more MD classics like in the Sonic Collection Plus for PS2 and X-Box. [/code]

So they finally announce a re-release for Sonic CD, and instead of being happy about that, everyone just finds a new game to bitch about because it's missing

LOL How very true...
Still, the collection looks good to me! I'm just pleased they're not including the likes of Sonic 1-Knuckles again... Plenty of new blood, here! I think GameCube will be my platform of choice. I hope they deliver before August, mind you, as that seems an awfully long time away.
As for the Sonic Arcade game, I'm somewhat pleased they haven't included it. I was one of the rare and few lucky people to sample that game, and I'd like to remain one of those few :)

From what I've read, the game list isn't final yet... so a couple of surprises could still be lurking about. And that for some reason, the game will be on the GC and PS2 in Europe, but only on the Cube in the States.

Yeah, but whatever it is you can guarantee that there will be something that people bitch about "You mean it's got every single Sonic game ever released? Great, but where's Lucky & Wild? DAMN YOU SEGA!"
maybe they will use the MS-versions, as they are almost the same. On the other hand the GG versions use more colors I think.
As far as I can tell, Sonic 2 on both systems have the same number of colors (that goes for most games released on both), but there is some different music. I've never played the first collection (nor do I have the proper systems to play it on), but I've read complaints of the screen being too stretched out.

I am so buying this collection, but I do have complaints. Sonic Spinball... we have the superior Genesis/Mega Drive version already on the origional collection. Why not substitute it for the GG origional Sonic the Hedgehog or Sonic Triple Trouble (both these titles should be on there IMO). And Knuckles Chaotix should of been given a chance too. Oh well, its still a good collection.

Knuckles Chaotix is really, really bad in my opinion. But yeah, I think I agree with you, it deserves its place on a compilation sooner rather than later.

SMS versions would be a nice touch
anagrama is right, we should be happy to see Sonic CD finally re-released after being gone for 12 years almost

I'm just pissed that the Sonic game where you roll your token down the ramp and try to land it on a moving platform that they had at Chuck E Cheese isn't on it...
[And yes, that was intended as a joke.]

Of course I started bitching that some other title is missing. That's what gamers do with the release of classic game collections :D , as there is always someone's favorite game missing..

I already have Sonic CD. I'm not really interested in a re-release. However, I've never even touched a Segasonic machine, nor have I had the opportunity to play it.
What's so hard to understand about that? Is this Nintendo logic at work? Get excited about about the possibility of playing games you already own or have access to, as opposed to something new?

Sonic CD really shouldn't be the main attraction in this compilation considering you can snag a brand new copy for the PC for a buck online. Any arguments about it not being the same thing should consider that the Gamecube isn't a Sega CD either. Hell for under 30 bucks you can acquire a Genesis, Sega CD and the original game if you're that hard up for it.
This was a great opportunity to showcase the more obscure Sonic titles and Sega passed on it. Not the end of the world, but disappointing all the same. They could have even thrown in the GBA games since they're all well past their retail lifespan individually, since it's apparent they were hurting for ideas on what to include (considering the repeats).

I agree with Bratwurst. I'm happy about this new collection and that people finally have the opportunity to play Sonic CD if they haven't before on the Sega CD.. but 6 gamegear games? Come on, they've could atleast put Chaotix or Sonic Arcade on there.
So they finally announce a re-release for Sonic CD, and instead of being happy about that, everyone just finds a new game to bitch about because it's missing
Oh sorry, guess we souldn't feel contempt about Sega release a package with 6 of the 9 games already included on Sonic DX.

Well, color me pleased as Hell. I will pick this up ONLY for Sonic CD - my absolute fave on the Sega CD. The best Sonic game - bar none too.
Will I ever play any of the other Game Gear crap on the disc? Nope. This could be "Sonic CD for PS2" and I would gladly shell out $40 for the game. I like it just that damn much. :D

Aw yeah :) I fixed one when I was managing a local arcade a few years back. I still like it, and it still makes quite a bit of token money.
I just had to figure out something to be pissed about, since it seemed everyone was pissed about something. I guess I wish that Knuckles Chaotix was on the comp, but I won't complain. I wonder what other games they'll stick on it. I bet Streets of Rage and Vectorman 2 will both make it on there.

Yeah, I'll be picking this up for Sonic CD alone.
It'll be nice to play Sonic CD almost anywhere, I mean, who doesn't have a PS2 or a Cube.

I finally got the Cube version recently and I'm playing it on Wii. I have a few questions about Sonic The Fighters..
1. This game is obviously modeled off the Virtua Fighter/Fighting Vipers series. Is there any way to knock the other characters through the barriers like in those games?
2. Which Sonic game did the fox character first appear in, or is he exclusive to Sonic The Fighters?
3. Why didn't this game ever make it out of Japan?

I had a few goes on Sonic Fighters in the Trocadero years ago. I'm sure there can't have been that many cabs outside Japan though. It's a pity the game never saw a Saturn release, but it's not really in keeping with the rest of the Sonic series.

1 - No Clue
2 - Do you mean Tails? He showed up in Sonic 2.
3 - I'm pretty sure it did, at least in limited release.
