I have a very simple problem with an equaly simple question being asked to attempt to fix my problem.

I am trying to open up a Genesis cart but I can not figure out how. There is some sort of screw or bolt that Sega used on a few of their products that I do not not what tool or alternative object I should use to remove them.

So, How do you open a Genesis cart? What type of tool do you use? Is it some sort of Gambit that I should use? Just please tell me how to open these carts.

As I said, very simple proble with a very simple question that a good number of people out here proably have a very simple answer to.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You need a special security bit. I think it's 4.5 mm but not positive. NES games take a 3.8 mm I think. Sylentwulf sells security bit sets. It is definitely worth the small investment because then you can open up all of your carts and clean them properly.

Also, invest in Torx bits. I've encountered them from time to time in Genny carts.

Thanks Jibbajaba for your help and thank you for telling me about Sylentwulf as he does have these and I will proably buy from him!

Thank you for telling me this also dendawg. I have talked to Sylentwulf and he told me about these too. As long as I am buying the security bit for my other Genesis games, I may buy one of these also in case I ever have to crack open another game that needs it!

That should do it then I guess! I think I have all the info I need to start opening carts and to get started on my project! Thanks go out to Jibbajaba, dendawg, and Sylentwulf!!! Thanks a lot guys!!!

Hey, glad to help. Good to know I can contribute something useful.

Also T-10 & T-15 should be all you need as far as the Torx bits go. 8-)

in addition to torx - there is a screw ive encountered on EA carts which i could not find a bit for anywhere - some one here sugested melting a plastic pen and jamming it into the screw hole - that works pretty good - but the pen wears out after a while and you need to sacrifice another and you get left with a bunch of ink inserts

I know that the problem has been solved already, But i have another method..

I don't have those Security bits, So i used a dremmel to get the plastic around the screws drilled away. Then i used a small set of pliers to turn the screws.

This method is NOT Reccomended. I used this method ONLY On several Terrible-condition Genesis games, So i could open the games up, then use the dremmel on the contacts to remove rust. And i am planning to trade these Terrible-condition games away.

The games have no place in my collection except for Tradebait.

and then you tape them back up?

and then you tape them back up?

Not exactly.. I only drill off Some plastic from around the screws so i can manage to get a tool in there to grab the screw, Then turn it.

Then when i'm done scraping the rust off, I put the case back together, And then put the screws back in, Then tighten them with the tool.

As stated before, The method is not reccomended.
